After the province's ambulance dispatch consolidation plan took place last month, mayors of Calgary, Red Deer, Lethbridge and Wood Buffalo are sharing concerns. #ableg

This morning, during a council meeting, Calgary's 911 director said they experienced issues on the first day of the switch in the city that prevented someone from receiving timely medical assistance.

Red Deer Mayor Tara Veer says they have all been seeing issues since the switch. She is calling for a third-party inquiry to investigate these problems.

Lethbridge Mayor Chris Spearman says they're not too surprised about technical failures, but they are particularly concerned that AHS has not been very up front about what happened. There have also been several mix-ups in his community. Lack of accountability from the province.

Spearman says this is clearly not about money or patient care, so he asks the province why are they doing this? "Lives are at risk, and we need to pause this transition now." He also calls for an investigation.

It was kind of apt, too. I worked in the Tribune for 11 years and right up to the last morning of the last day, I found it to be a place where journalists had licence to try things that would be good. Didn’t always make financial sense but that was someone else’s problem. 4/?

Thing was, we always knew it was doomed. We always knew it wasn’t making money and that the plug could be pulled at any time. On some level, I always felt that gave you a bit more freedom to try things. Which made it a great place to be young and make mistakes. 5/?

Differential privacy was invented in 2006. Seems like a long time but it's not a long time since a fundamental scientific invention. It took longer than that between the invention of public key cryptography and even the first version of SSL.

But even in 2020, we still can't meet user expectations.
* Data users expect consistent data releases
* Some people call synthetic data "fake data" like
"fake news"
* It's not clear what "quality assurance" and "data exploration" means in a DP framework

The next, the still-regnant study of maslaha by Felicitas Opwis, was published a dozen years & two dozen titles later (#31).

Let's imagine that elections use all the security measures security people have been advocating: risk-limiting audits, paper ballots, etc. Would people trust the elections more?

Jack would argue no. Most people don't understand this stuff and most of the claims people are making can't be disproven. And are massively bogus already.

Georgia did a full recount on paper ballots and it very much didn't stop people from doubting the election!

Are election security results in vain? The point of election security is to convince the loser they lost.

No! Have to focus on the whole stack, from election infrastructure to campaigns to people and mis/dis-informaton

One takeaway from the talk: the parts of the stack must work in tandem. Can't fight misinformation in a vacuum, but must build on other election security measures.
