That was the first signal of what was to come... Today we saw the very best of Laschet - playing the reliable, careful person, not heavy on detail

Merz by contrast gave an ill focused speech, and did not make a single reference to Merkel or AKK, the outgoing party leader. He seems to have learned nothing

Röttgen, long the outsider, gave a speech with a lot more detail - especially on green issues and the future

U.S. Magistrate Judge Reona J. Daly asks the defendant's consent to participate in today's hearing remotely.

The defendant, Mathew Capsel, agrees.

Judge Daly asks whether Capsel is asking the court to appoint counsel for him.

"Yes, ma'am."

She reviews his financial affidavit, and she agrees to his public defender.

The prosecutor asks for detention, saying that he's a danger to the community and a flight risk.

They will proceed on that motion.

Prosecutor said that Capsel had a suicide attempt over marital issues.

"There's violence in this defendant's history, as a juvenile and as an adult."

He alleges that he has a history of trespass as well, before the Capitol insurrection.

Biden already has a plan that would affect the tax benefits of your 401k. And it’s not exactly a secret that Democrats have been eyeing the 401k accounts for years. First they want to collect the taxes that you’re saving by using a 401k. It’s a lot of money.

That green new deal? Oh yeah that’s gonna be crazy expensive. It’s gonna mean deficit spending that makes precious deficit spending look like a balanced budget in comparison. Worse yet is that it’s going to cost jobs. Lots and lots of jobs.

There’s the direct job loss for example, keystone pipeline layoffs. But there’s indirect job losses. Because people like me can sorta absorb increased energy and gasoline prices. But that usually means I’m going to cut back on spending. That less eating out. Less purchases.

Maybe ending services like housekeeping or pest control in favor of DIY. Now my little contribution won’t cost a job but take 10 people like me and you’ve got a couple job losses. Take 1000 people or 10000 like me and you’re looking at big job losses.

(2) There are some good indications that Schumer and Senate Democrats outmaneuvered Mitch McConnell quite neatly on the filibuster issue earlier this week and that they plan to move forward on stimulus without regard to GOP

(3) It's important to note that as much as the wins in Georgia provided Dems control of the Senate, they hold the slimmest of majorities in both chambers and that hampers their agenda.

Because of the filibuster, passing legislation requires 60

(4) So while we can breeze through cabinet nominations, passing progressive legislation is much harder. But that doesn't mean Dems shouldn't try.

Because despite what Republicans want you to believe, Biden's proposed plans have widespread public

The White supremacists who attacked the Capitol on 1/6 claimed they were defending America from the coming destruction of an antiracist politics. This fearmongering piece argues antiracist demands at schools “would destroy the institutions themselves.”

White supremacist violence is tacitly being fomented by pieces like this one. McWhorter urged people to “resist destructive demands” and press “for the very survival of the institution,” and praised a professor who said the demands would lead to a “’civil war on campus.’” 2/9

And, as usual when writing on antiracism, McWhorter is arguing against himself. He misrepresented the position of campus activists and argued against his own misrepresentations. 3/9

He misrepresented these activists as believing their institutions are entirely racist, have never made antiracist changes, and need “to be blown up.” Then he points to the reforms these schools have made. 4/9

In fact, these activists would almost certainly acknowledge the existence of past reforms. But the issue is these institutions still have widespread and pervasive inequities and injustices which of course McWhorter fails to mention. 5/9
