1/ PROFILE THREAD: So just who were the people who entered the Capitol on the afternoon of January 6th? If you believe the media they were wealthy, well-armed, white nationalists seeking to overthrow the government - a riotous insurgency. Here are the stories of a few of them:

The government has filed its brief in support of holding Jake Angeli (aka "Q-Shaman") without bail pending trial. Let's take a look. #lawtwitter

First, an 18-page memo filed prior to a detention hearing isn't unheard of, but it's not every day, either. It's a signal that they really, really want this guy locked up.

Next: the charges. They're getting serious here. Angeli faces two felonies: 18 USC 231 civil disorder,

which carries up to to five years in prison, and 18 USC 1512(c)(2), obstructing an official proceeding (the electoral college count), which carries up to 20 years in prison. And some misdemeanors.

Next we come to the authorization for detention. The government has to show

That some law says the judge can jail him pending trial. In this case, Angeli is totally fucked because of a prop choice: he used a spear as a portable flag pole, and that gets him a "felony involving the use of a dangerous weapon."

In general, if you're gonna crime, crime without a weapon. It'll go better when you're prosecuted.

One really notable choice on page 1: they're calling the coup a "violent insurrection that attempted to overthrow the US Government." I haven't seen that in an official doc yet.

Republicans caused this to happen, because they wanted it to happen.

The president.
The Senators.
The Representatives.
And their voters.

An open show that they care about nothing but domination. That is their politics.

The American Fascist Party.

The gates were opened for them.

Later they were escorted out.

In between, they delivered their message. This space belongs to white supremacy, because this country belongs to white supremacy.

And now those who orchestrated it will pretend they had nothing to do with it.

"The worst of us are safer at their very worst than any of the rest of you are at your best."

That's the message. Republicans have delivered it for decades, last year most notably in their Covid policy.

They're very consistent to it.

If you belong to this party, and you aren't a white supremacist fascist, yes you are.

Yes. You are.

You just gave yourself an alternate reason to join. And you lend your support to the things an American Fascist Party does, which they do use, to deliver their promised atrocity.

The events of yesterday shocked everyone—with the exception of those who were pretending to be shocked.

But for millions of us, it wasn't a surprise. We've been watching what Republicans do and say.

An attempt to overthrow democracy was always the promise.

And still is.

1/ In response to some questions about release of some Capitol Hill defendants on bond pending trial, I offer this brief explainer. Detention is governed by the federal Bail Reform Act.

2/ Keep in mind that pretrial, defendants are presumed innocent, and cannot be held to punish them for the crime of which they are accused. Detention is to prevent them from harming others or fleeing.

3/ Defendants get a presumption of release, and the majority are released on bond, a promise to pay a sum if they fail to return, often $10,000. Defendants are detained only if no conditions can ensure their appearance at trial or the safety of the community.

4/ At a detention hearing, the government bears the burden of proving danger to the community by clear and convincing evidence or risk of flight by a preponderance of the evidence.

5/ If the judge finds this burden is not met, she will release the defendant on bond. She may include conditions, like an ankle monitor to reduce risk of flight, or no contact with victims, to reduce risk of harm or obstruction.

Merry Christmas everyone! What better way to distract yourself these days than a long thread about the largely unnoticed establishment of a vast military production infrastructure in Myanmar!

While Myanmar has maintained some military production capabilities for along time, these have traditionally been rather limited. Only in the last two decades has this infrastructure been vastly expanded with the country now mustering at least 25 factories.

These facilities are surprisingly large and usually built in remote jungle areas of the country with on-site housing for workers. Maintained by the Directorate of Defence Industries, they are known by their Burmese acronym Ka Pa Sa and numbered.

Different sources were used for geolocation. A few sites have previously been discussed in the OSINT community. Some locations were mentioned in media reports involving land disputes, others were included in reports about Myanmar's national electricity grid.

Cybernetics is the science of psychopathy and it's been the de facto guide to all corporate government policy for many decades. Just a matter of accepting what the specific ends are (namely the steering of society to self-destruction) that's needed to comprehend what's happening.

The word cybernetics comes from the Greek κυβερνήτης (kybernētēs) meaning steersman, governor, pilot, or rudder and is defined as the study of control and communication in the animal and the machine. It has been the prevailing zeitgeist in all government policy since after WWII.

Reason the goals are openly stated is that they've found those goals are accepted through social experimentation and observing feedback (e.g. climate change, renewable, sustainable, etc.) All nebulous terms used as justification.

Because cybernetics is an ongoing feedback system, it has no conclusion. They just keep altering the parameters of the system as they achieve particular goals. It is not a system for assisting people to be self-sufficient, rather engineering people to be perpetually dependent.

Dave Drew was a multiple time convicted felon with a huge rap sheet for narco and gun trafficking. He would need not only a willing Governor but

the Chief Justice of the #California State Supreme Court. This took planning, coordination and timing. It also took a handful of public relations consultants and @RepJimmyPanetta's dad's hand on all of this. This was big stuff.

In 2018 all that work paid off and a corrupt gov.

So the Canadian government will soon be introducing legislation aimed at regulating platforms with respect to harmful speech, spearheaded by Heritage Minister Steven Guilbeault. I'm concerned b/c we haven't seen a lot of serious thought from the Gov on this. A thread:

Guilbeault has taken this on as part of a large digital regulatory agenda that also includes things like requiring Canadian content on streaming services, and potentially forcing intermediaries to pay for news (like Australia).

We don't know what form the legislation will take, but there's cause for concern that it's partially going to look a lot like the German NetzDG law, and require hate speech and other illegal speech to be taken down quickly. It will also include a new regulator to do...something

The concern comes from the PM's mandate letter to the Minister, which asked him to "create new regulations for social media platforms, starting with a requirement that all platforms remove illegal content, including hate speech, within 24 hours or face significant penalties."

I haven't seen anything to suggest Guilbeault has moved away from this. His office was quoted recently as saying "our approach will require online platforms to monitor and eliminate illegal content that appears on their platforms."

Me : Occassionaly you can find critical friends. People that we willing to tell you the truth as they see it regardless of the consequences. They are not very common and it normally requires a deep sense of duty that exceeds any loyalty to others.

Me : Rarely but that depends. If the organisation has a core overiding principle of focusing on the customer need and I don't mean lip service to this but absolutely embedded into its very core then yes i.e. places like Amazon, Alibaba etc.
