WHY IS GREEN CAMPHOR APPLIED TO CHIN OF SRI VENKATESWARA: STORY

Although called Green Camphor, it is actually white (Pachcha Karpooram).
This is applied daily to Sri Venkateswara’s chin.

Sri Ramanujacharya once asked a Bhakta Ananthalwar to build a flower garden on Tirumala.

As this was a divine task assigned to him by Acharya,Anantalwar decided on not seeking the services of any outsider except his wife who was pregnant at that time.
His wife started carrying soil from one place to another everyday but used to get exhausted soon.

Sri Venkateswara took the form of a 12-year old boy and started assisting Ananthalwar’s wife.
One day, Ananthalwar saw the boy and could not control his anger. He threw his crowbar at the boy which hit him on the chin.
The boy disappeared and Ananthalwar realised his mistake.

He ran to the mandir and saw Sri Venkateswara with a bleeding chin.
Ananthalwar immediately applied green camphor to Sri Hari’s chin and begged to be forgiven.
The kind Prabhu forgave him and asked him to ensure that the cooling camphor was applied to his chin daily.

So the practice continues till today.
The flower garden built by Ananthalwar is on the right side of the Mandir.
The crowbar with which Ananthalwar had hit Sri Venkateswara’s chin hangs to the right side of the main entrance to the Garbha Griha of the Tirumala Mandir.

Ratneshwar temple near Manikarnika Ghat, is also called Kashi Karvat. It means a temple in Kashi, which leans ( karvat) to one side.

The story behind its tilted nature is quite interesting.

There is a legend surrounding the origin of this temple, which states that it was built by a certain servant of Raja Man Singh for his mother, named Ratna Bai. Once the temple was built, the man proudly declared that he had paid the debt to his mother.

Much to his shock, as soon as these words escaped his lips, the temple started tilting backwards (north-west) to show that the debt to one’s mother can never be paid. The sanctum sanctorum of this shrine remains under Ganga water for most of the year.

Reportedly,Ratneshwar Mahadev Temple has a higher tilt than Italy’s famous Leaning Tower of Pisa built in1173. As the story behind the tilted nature of this Italian monument goes,the ground to its one side had started sinking under the weight of the stones after its construction.

This place called as Dhandanayakkan
was once used as a place for grazing Cows. Cows fed the grass here and were taken for milking. One such cow didn't allow the owner for milking nor did it allowed calf to go near. Cowboy developed doubts and decided to watch that cow.

When all other Cows went for grazing this one went alone near a Vengai tree and stood beneath it. Milk began to flow from automatically. The cow repeated this everyday & the villagers went to see the place and found an anthill. When villagers removed the anthill they found out

Swayambhu Vigraham of Mariamman here. Thus temple was constructed here. Dhandanayakkan forest was called Bannari from which, this name Bannari came. Bannari soil is given as prasadam.

SHREE MUMBADEVI MANDIR, MUMBAI (MAHA)

Mumbadevi is the patron Devi of Mumbai city.
The word Mumba comes from Maha and Amba.
She is also the patron Devi of Agri (salt collectors) and Kolis (Fishermen).
The fishermen regard her as their protector and as Maha Shakti.

Legend says that Devi came to earth to end the demon Mumbarka.
After his defeat, Mumbarka begged Devi to take his name. Thus, Devi came to be called Mumba Devi.
The demon Mumbarka also build a mandir and dedicated it to Mumba Devi. The present mandir was reconstructed in 1737.

The murti of Mumba Devi symbolises Mother Earth.
Devi Annapurna on a peacock stands on her left.
Navratri witnesses a huge number of Bhaktas.
Devi blesses her worshippers with good health and prosperity and also known to bless childless couples.

It was here Periya Nambigal performed Pancha Samskaaram to Ramanujar under Magizham tree.
Sri Ramanujar was on his way from Kanchipuram to meet Sri Periya Nambigal at Sri Rangam to become his disciple. Sri Periya Nambigal also started towards Kanchipuram to meet Ramanujar.

They both met here at Madurantakam.
Small Mandapam where Ramanujar undertook Pancha Samskaaram is seen in the temple. Separate sannidhi is for Periya Nambigal & Ramanujar & this is the only temple where Ramanujar is seen as a Grahastha (married person) and not in Sanyasa kolam.

Story says about an incident which occurred during British rule. The Madurantakam lake bund was about to breach, due to heavy rain & village will be flooded if it happened. Dt collector was Cl. Lionel Blaze who took efforts to protect the bund & asked for the piles of stones

in the temple to protect it. But it was meant for Janakavalli ( sita) Thayar sannidhi which faced shortage of fund. Lionel Blaze prayed Sri Ramar to save the bund and if so he will provide fund to construct.
That night he saw in the lightning, Sri Rama & Lakshmana walked along

ANTARVEDI LAKSHMI NARASIMHA SWAMY, EAST GODAVARI DIST.(AP)

Located where Vasistha Godavari joins Bay of Bengal.

Present structure was built by Kapanati Krishnamma of Agnikula Kshatriya clan in 1823.

It is one of the oldest among 32 Narasimha Kshetras in AP.

Legend says that here Maharishi Vasishta prayed to Narasimha to end the demon Rakta Vilochana.

Narasimha created Maha Maya, also called Ashwaroodambika or Gurralakka to suck his blood as he got a boon from Brahma that blood falling from his body would produce another demon.

After his death, the stream of blood was let out by Maya to form a pond called Rakta Kulya.

Narasimha,then,washed Sudarshan Chakra at a place called Chakra Tirtha.

Brahma is said to have performed Yagna and installed Shiva Linga here. Hence the place was called Antarvedi.

Later Sri Rama prayed here and Arjun also visited here.

Panchamrita Abhishekam is done every day.
One can have Nijarupa Darshanam (main murti without any decorative shield) between 6.00 a.m. and 8.00 a.m.

Anna Prasadam is very famous and distributed daily from 10:30 to 2 pm.

Hindu temples of Varanasi were devastated so many times, that almost no ancient temple site could escape modification. The 10th c. Kardameshwar temple of Siva, in Kandura village near BHU is the only temple in its original state dating from the pre-Muslim period.

The Islamic invasions began in In 1033 CE when Varanasi was plundered by Mahmud Ghazni’s son Nialtagin. By end of 11th c., Chandradeva, established the Gahadavala dynasty by regaining Kashi & built the Adi Keshava shrine with gold, valuables, 1000 cows & a village.

In 1194 CE, Muhammad Ghori’s commander Kutubuddin Aibak attacked & razed Varanasi to the ground. Hindus were massacred & over 1000 ancient temples destroyed. So much booty was taken away that it took 1400 camels to carry it.

Hindus recaptured Kashi, so in 1197 CE Kutubuddin attacked again. But he lost control once more by 1212 CE, when Bengal’s Visvarupa Sena erected a Yupa & Vijay Stambh of victory at the center of Varanasi, declaring it the ”Kshetra of Shiva Visveshwara”.

Sthala Puranam says that Vigraham was made by Mahavishnu himself and handed over to Brahma Deva, who transferred it to King Sutapas

and his wife.
After many generations the Vigraham was worshipped by Vasudeva & Devaki and later prathista done at Dwaraka by Krishna. When Dwaraka was flooded the Vigraham was given to Udhava and Krishna instructed Guru (Brihaspati) & Vayu to do prathista in a suitable

suitable place to worship during Kali yuga.

Parashurama lead them here which was a beautiful pond of Paramashiva & Parvati Devi. Shiva gave permission for Guru & Vayu to built a temple here, thus the name Guruvayur (Guru+ Vayu).

Paramashiva & Parvati Devi is worshipped at Mammiyur nearby and the worship at Guruvayur is not complete if one does not visit Mammiyur Mahadevan. Ekadasi is very important here.

MOTI DOONGRI GANESHA, JAIPUR (Raj)

Moti Doongri has a striking resemblance to a pearl drop.
The Ganesh Mandir was built by Seth Jai Ram Paliwal in 18th c. It is one of the most significant mandirs in Jaipur.
Ganesha’s trunk faces left, considered very auspicious.

Legend is that in 17th century when the King of Mewar was returning home, he carried a Ganesha murti with him on a bullock cart. He declared that wherever the bullock cart first stopped, he would build a mandir for Ganesha.
The cart stopped at the foothill of Moti Doongri.

Thus, the mandir was built here. (Doongri means a small hill).

There are two ledges on both sides of the entrance to mandir.

People believe that Ganesha is pleased if Bhaktas sit here for a few minutes after offering their prayers and do not rush back home immediately.

🌺A STORY FROM SHIVA PURANA , WHERE A GAMBLER ATTAINS SHIVALOKA 🌺

There used to live a man by the name Yagyadutt in Kampilyanagar, who was proficient in the performance of Somyagya. He had a son named Gunanidhi.

Though he was a scholar but at the same time he was irreligious & kept bad company. He indulged in evil activities like gambling.

His father-Yagyadutt was unaware of his evil activities. Whenever he asked his wife about Gunanidhi's habits & conduct,his wife used to tell lies.

Thus Gunamidhi's condition became worst day by days.

Yagyadutt married Gunanidhi with a girl belonging to a well to do family. But his habits had not changed.His mother tried her best to make him understand,but it was of no use.

One day Yagydut saw a gambler wearing his ring.

He asked him about that ring. Gambler told him that his son Gunanidhi had lost it to him in gamble.He also informed him that he had also lost numerous ornaments&other properties in the gamble.

Yagydut became very angry & married with another woman after abandoning his wife&son.

When Gunanidhi came to know about his father's second marriage,he moved to another place,cursing his fate.He kept on walking till he became tired.He sat under a tree&started thinking about his further course of action.His heart was full of remorse&he repented for his past actions

Aurangzeb, the 6th Mughal Emperor who destroyed multiple Hindu temples, could not touch “Karmanghat Hanuman Mandir” during his reign.

Abul Muzaffar Muhi-ud-Din Muhammad Aurangzeb (3 November 1618 - 3 March 1707 CE) was the third son and sixth child of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal.

He was born when his father was governor of Gujarat.

Aurangzeb was well known for his rejection of pluralism and expansion of Islam by force.

His father appointed him as viceroy of the Deccan in 1636 CE and he brought the Nizam Shahi dynasty to an end.

After multiple confrontations with his elder brother Dara Shikoh, Aurangzeb took control over army and ordered on 10 August 1659, Dara was executed on grounds of apostasy.

Aurangzeb was crowned Sultan and he started expanding his kingdom along with religion.

History of Karmanghat Hanuman Temple:

During late 12th century, a comman-in-chief of Kakatiya Dynasty went for hunting and rested under a tree in a forest. He could hear the chanting of Raam and when searched, found stone idol of Hanuman Ji in seated posture.

Sthala Puranam is says Ugra bhavam of Narasimhar. Before opening Garbha Griham people used to place green husk in front of the door.

The green husk would catch fire because of the Ugra murthy. Thus to calm down ugra murthy, prathista of Lakshmi Varaha Swamy is done here. Before opening Narasimha sannidhi, Lakshmi Varaha sannidhi is opened first & prathista is done such a way that drishti of Narasimhar falls

Straight to Lakshmi vahara murthy.

Narasimha Jayanti is very famous here. Pillars in the temple depicts the brilliant Hoysala architecture.

A demon Mura had become so powerful that the Devas had to seek Sri Hari’s help.

Sri Vishnu and Mura fought for about 10,000 years.
After that, Sri Vishnu went to Badrikashram to take rest at Hemvati Caves.

Demon Mura chased Sri Vishnu and tried to attack him while sleeping.

Then, Shakti adorned with all weapons emerged from Narayana’s body and killed Mura.

This Yogmaya was blessed by Sri Hari who gave her the name Ekadashi.

Ekadashi was given the boon that anyone fasting with devotion on this day would enjoy worldly pleasures and attain moksha.

GOLDEN THRONE or Chinnada Simhasana or Ratna Simhasana in Kannada,was the royal throne of rulers of Mysore.Its one of the main attractions of Mysore Palace. Its kept for public viewing only during Dasara Festival and on rest of the days its disassembled and kept in safe lockers.

In the Northern most bay of Gombe Thotti is the Golden Howdah also called the Ambari.the core of this Howdah is a wooden structure in the form of a mantapa which is covered with 80 kgs of Gold Sheets having intricate designs consisting of scrolls,foliage and flowers.

Focus of the Dasara Procession’s grand finale. Either side of Howdah are 2 ivory fly whishks, finely cut strips of ivory form the bristles which are tipped with zari, type of thread made from thinnest gold or silver wire. 2 Lights attached to the Howdah red and green r battery..

..operated and used to control pace of the procession by the King. King would customarily stop to receive floral offerings form his subjects. Elephant would lift the garland up to the king who would touch the flower then the elephant would hand it back.

During the days of yore, the king would sit in the Howdah accompanied by his brother and nephew. Sri Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar as the last member of the royal family to ride in Golden Howdah. Seven cannons were fired to make momentous events.

Rudra and Apollo [A thread]

In Vedic literature, one of the most frequent names of Rudra is शर्व ("archer").

Yajurveda 4.5 (Taittiriya Samhita) is popularly known as Shri Rudram or Śatarudrīya

Its fifth Anuvaka starts with

नमोभवाय च रुद्राय च नमः शर्वाय च पशुपतयेच

Infact, the Śatarudrīya starts with:

नमस्तेरुद्रमन्यव उतोत इषवेनमः ।
नमस्ते अस्तुधन्वनेबाहुभ्यामुततेनमः ॥

"Veneration to your wrath, O Rudra. Veneration to your arrow as well; Veneration to your bow and veneration to your arms" (Yajurveda 4.5.1.1).

In fact, in the entire Vedic literature, triśūla is not mentioned anywhere as the weapon of Rudra-Śiva. This is only mentioned in Post Vedic literature(Epic and Puranic)

Likewise, God Apollo is renowned in Ancient Greek literature as "The Archer".

In Illiad (c. 800 BC), The most frequent phrase used by Homer to describe Apollo is "Apollo who shoots from afar"
