following a discussion at @yak_collective this morning, I came up with this chart to capture a hypothesis I have that the difficulty of creating communities scales exponentially with the the "depth" of what you're trying to do

thanks @grigorimilov for leading the discussion that sparked this.

The way to read the graph is: each line is a time history of difficulty. It starts dotted, goes through a criticality inflection point, and then crests in difficulty before coming down to a stable plateau.

The inflection points have different names depending on context, but are all topologically similar. They are the make or break moment when a network-effect either kicks in, or fails to. "Product-market fit" in the case of market is the best known such point.

Level 1 is a basic social community, such as a FB group, meetup etc. There are millions of successful ones, and 100s of millions of failures. The "fit point" is what I call a meme-mind fit, when some social object catalyzes a sustainable long-term conversation of growing richness

Almost everything I've helped instigate is Level 1. My contributions to the social-object soup have been things like the vocabulary around sociopaths/clueless/losers, legibility, 2x2s etc.

Vormithrax is basically the Lobos of Cataclysm. He plays the game with challenges that'd make it impossible for other people to survive even for a few minutes.

While his challenge runs are stunning, it is annoying that there *is* a meta.

In each, "normally I'd ___ but I can't do it so easily now, so ___"

What usually happens is someone watches a Cataclysm video, gets it, and then dies.

Then dies and dies and dies, having tons of fun in the process.

And then they learn the meta.

Grind slings to level crafting, search bushes to level survival. Make a knife spear. Stop making a knife spear, they nerfed it.

And before you know it, every game starts the same way. Like a video game, not an apocalypse simulator, or a story generator.

One of my main concerns is intraparty factionalism/fighting. Everything a "moderate" & "progressive"

2. D fights- a R gets a vote. Certainly radical (and yes, defunding police departments IS radical) policy proposals that fall on the outside bands of the distribution are less attractive to this idealized "swing" voter who is, in our minds eye" always a high info, high reasoning.

Jesus. I just watched the Ashli Babbitt video that the Washington Post has, and if I'm following the conversation happening, the people at the front of the mob trying to break into the room told the police to leave, offering to "make a path" and saying...

Democrats have a lot of good ideas to help people fast, and visibly. They have good ideas for deepening democracy, like the "For The People Act." But if they let Senate Republicans filibuster everything, they will lose in 2022, and they will deserve it.

A lot of them understand this. “I’m going to do everything I can to bring people together,” Senator @RonWyden, who will chair the powerful Senate Finance Committee, told me. “but I’m not just going to stand around and do nothing while Mitch McConnell ties everyone up in knots.”

It is #BellLetsTalk ...so let’s talk. Have you ever responded to the question “how are you doing?” with a “fine” or “good” even though you really weren’t fine or good?! I know I certainly have.

While every time you are asked it may not be a great time to delve into what is going on I challenge you and myself to be courageous enough to answer how you are really doing. Especially when talking with those people that you have around you that are your support system.

As a nurse I find that I am constantly observing and assessing my patients and residents. How are they doing (both physically and mentally)? Trying my hardest to notice the big and small changes that could mean they aren’t doing as well or hopefully doing better.

I challenge you healthcare workers to turn that observation and assessment on yourself and coworkers. Did you notice the subtle and sometimes glaringly obvious signs of chronic stress and burnout? I certainly didn’t.

So now it’s time to talk....talk to your family, talk to your friends, talk to your coworkers, talk to your children. Check in with them, don’t settle for “fine” “good”. Make a safe space for people to open up to you and for you to them.
