Across the Green Grass Fields launches today. I adored working on this book and I encourage you to check it out even if you are new to the series.
I also want to talk about being intersex (a thread) and Regan
I worked as a sensitivity reader for this book. Reganās experiences were modeled in part after my own, though our diagnoses are different (my intersex variation is so rare my endocrinologist could only find one other reported instance).
This book is beautiful to me. Regan is a girl, an intersex girl. Just like I was. Sheās different. She has to mask and play along to fit in and happens to have one hobby girly enough to be accepted by other girls. This is also luxury I barely got.
When the world comes crushing down, Regan gets to escape to a world of magical talking equines who do not give a flying fuck what her body is doing or what her chromosomes are.
She gets a gift many of us in the intersex community never doāa chance to just BE
I donāt know how to adequately describe what this experience would have meant for me.
Being intersex isnāt like being nonbinary or trans, though these things are often conflated. Every doctor I see I must disclose my condition to because medications affect me differently

There are as many ways to be an intersex person as there are ways to be "a girl," whatever that means (something Regan spends the whole book struggling with). Regan's specific flavor of intersex was very much informed by @Galactoglucoman, who is an incredibly patient...

1/ In "stupid lawsuits over mean tweets" news, the 6th Cir. will hear arguments shortly in a case against @kathygriffin (save your personal opinions about her, I really don't care). Listen in here at 1:30 Eastern:
2/ The case has flown mostly under the radar, likely because it was dismissed on the relatively unsexy issue of personal jurisdiction. But it's extremely important in cases about online speech (I'll add more to this thread later about that).
3/ The suit was brought by parents of Covington Catholic students that attended that infamous 'March for Life', who probably saw the Sandmann lawsuit and said "let's try to get rich off of this too!" There's no shortage of lawyers willing to help you on that quest.
4/ The basis of the lawsuit is that during the whirlwind of coverage over the March for Life incident, Kathy Griffin sent some tweets about identifying the protesters seen in the videos that went viral.
Complaint: https://t.co/EF9ST2Som5
5/ The lawsuit calls these tweets "doxing," which strikes me as kind of hyperbolic. I know some people disagree with me on this, but the identity of someone taking part in a public event (which is literally all Griffin asked for) is not particularly private information.

Hello Toronto! Ford is about to announce new restrictions after we heard from experts about how something has to give to keep hospitals below capacity to provide critical patient care (see buds @jyangstar @katecallen for that). Iāll post here what the changes mean for the city:
These are *current* rules for whole province, including Toronto: https://t.co/xKrVQKwJ2g
It appears we should not expect a full lockdown or curfew. Ford scheduled to speak any minute. Iāll try to make this foolproof but rules are not always clear from initial provincial release
BREAKING: Province now in state of emergency for 28 days. A stay-at-home order is being issued for Thurs. at 12:01AM ā everyone must stay home except for essential trips, medical appts. In-person classes in Toronto, several other regions will remain suspended until Feb. 10.
I donāt have full details yet on this order, but stay tuned. Ford calls it a ādrasticā measure. āEveryone must stay home to save lives.ā He says enforcement and inspections will increase. Workplace inspectors will have powers to disperse people and issue tickets, he says
There will be enforcement blitzes at box-box stores, Ford says.

Iām amazed at how many high-performers have serious or chronic health issues like TMJ, severe muscle pain, carpal tunnel.
Iāve dealt with my share of health issues; imho it all comes down to stress.
A story about stress and what Iāve learned from managing it...
**Read On**
I woke up with a pain in my side that wouldnāt go away. Hours later, the doctors were performing an appendectomy.
I was out for 2 weeks and it hurt like hell.
I donāt think it was a coincidence that I was fired 4 months
After Udemy, I got healthy and built a fitness routine.
My physical health was better than ever, and people noticed. I was the perfect brand ambassador for a healthy food company.
Problem solved, right?
The good times didn't last. Running Sprig was freaking hard (all startups are) and soon I developed TMJ - severe jaw pain related to grinding oneās teeth.
It would get so bad that at times I couldnāt even get out of bed in the morning.
The problem wasnāt the TMJ or appendicitis. The problem was stress.
I had improved my physical health but didnāt consider my mental health! The two feed off one another. A healthy lifestyle means having both.

8 years ago, I got fired as President and co-founder of @udemy, a now-$2B unicorn

This is a tough story to share, and I’ll try my best to be honest
Fortunately this story ends on a positive note & I hope it’ll be useful to anyone who’s been laid off or fired.

Old folk etymology connected it with Latin latere "to lie hidden," and a fable of Saturn.
