1. Very pleased that my article with @MBEGriffiths about the hostile environment policy has been published in the journal Critical Social Policy, after over four years of work on it. Thread on some of what we say.

2. We look at the origins, extent, operationalisation and impacts of the hostile environment in the labour and housing markets, public services, pricing, healthcare and education.

3. It is a policy over which, by design, the government lost control because it relies on third parties to implement it on the ground.

4. The modern policy has long antecedents but from around 2012 the approach was dramatically and recklessly expanded and any pretence at 'balance' by making immigration compliance easier was abandoned.

5. We argue the hostile environment was never an evidence-driven policy expected to achieve measurable immigration outcomes but rather an ideological policy propelled by a set of moral values.

Genes are to Evolution, Memes are to Culture, Dicenes are to General Intelligences.

Open-ended generative processes like evolution and human culture have a thing that is replicated and propagated by the process. For evolution, these are known as genes. For culture, these are known as memes.

It became obvious to me that there isn't an equivalent for individual brains. Is there something that is equivalent to this in general intelligent systems or biological brains?

I have come up with a term that describes these. The word I've invented is 'dicene'. This word is inspired by C.S. Peirce's dicent sign or dicisign. It is the combination then of dicent and gene, and thus dicene.

But why dicene over so many other possibilities like schemes, themes, intuitions, patterns, schemas, embeddings, attention, habits, explanations, ideas, meanings, representations, concepts, analogies, and lekta?

It won't matter where or who one is. I think this is clear.

Anyhow, we're also clever in the main. Categorizing individuals, groupings and all that. It won't cut the mustard now. But i see differences, i do.
Now and again, more and more frequently, it occurs that -->

X : We need to adapt to our new reality.
Me : A question?
X : Should we start with organisation or operating model first?
Me : Neither. Start with doctrine i.e. basic principles of your company. This will lead you to landcape which will lead you to structure + operating model.

X : Don't we need to get the structure right though?
Me : Structure against what? If you don't understand the landscape that you operate in then how do you structure around it? How do you decide what your operating model is? Awareness comes first and that needs those principles.

X : Explain?
Me : Pretend you're running a tea shop (I'm a Brit, I like tea shops). First thing you need to do is to know who your users are - the public, the business for example (there are more like regulators etc).

... but just knowing the users is not enough, you need to know what they need i.e. a cup of tea, maybe something more like entertainment or a nice piece of fruitcake

Let me tell you a story about Sir Roger Bannister.

He was the first man to run a mile in under four minutes

Before Sir Roger, it was the mainstream GLOBAL belief that it was IMPOSSIBLE for the human body to sustain such speeds without breaking down ..

The 'experts' believed that the record could only be broken on a day with no wind, at 20 Celsius, on a hard dry clay track in front of a huge cheering crowd;

Ideal conditions.

May 6th, 1954 was no such day.

It was cold, the track was wet, and there were only 3000 people in the the Iffley Road crowd.

Bannister had rested for five days before because he’d reached his peak, both physically and psychologically.

Six men entered the race. Straight away, Bannister took the lead

Bannister began his last lap with a time of 3.07. He needed to do the last one in 59 seconds.

He flew past Chataway onto the last straight. He knew this was it.

The world stood still.

THREAD - HANUMA VIHARI'S INSPIRING JOURNEY.

Joined the St.Johns Cricket Academy at the age of 11. And after few days his father passed away. But the next day, Vihari scored 80 in the final and won a school tournament.

Special Purpose Acquisition Company (SPAC) has become very popular globally, especially in USA. SPACs are known as blank cheque companies, because its a shell company with cash. What is it? How does it work? This is a thread.

(1) A group of people, known as the promoters / founders will list a company (SPAC) on the stock exchange. They are the key management who are also shareholders of the SPAC.

(2) SPAC is a listed company, but has no assets, no business, nothing. It only has cash raised from IPO. Shell company with lots of money.

(3) Once listed, the SPAC will use this money to acquire another company and merge it into the SPAC. Once merged, the company is no longer a SPAC, as it now has assets & a core business and operates like any listed company.

(4) The money raised from IPO will be kept in a trust, until an acquisition is identified, closed & approved by regulators & shareholders. The operating expense of the SPAC is borned by promoters until the SPAC turns into company.
