Mary(Not real name) was a friend I met on Twitter. We had good conversations but disagreed on how Twitter court of public opinions handled rape issues. We agreed to meet and our first meeting was at her place.

She brought up the issue of why I always sat on the fence and why I always wanted to hear from the other party because it means I support the “rapist” – RAPIST? I found it funny because how do you label someone a rapist just from an allegation?

You didn't hear from the accused & never want to hear the details of the allegation because you deem it insensitive. Mary explained that she was a victim and she is still traumatized and she asked if I knew just being a guy suffices to make her feel unsafe because she was alone?

That is why she normally prefers having her flatmate around or at least pretend her flatmate was around when she had a male visitor. I said her fears were valid because, stranger danger.
We ate lunch, gisted, played scrabble (which she cheated to win. Lool) and saw a movie.

When it was time to leave, I turned and asked her, do you know if you went on Twitter to say I raped you, nobody would ask question? They will believe because you are a woman. She nodded in the affirmative and said she knows.

If you post something to twitter, a social media platform by which ideas are shared, and you don't want people to comment on it or provide their opinions, you can use many tools on twitter (locking account, changing who can reply).

Calling disagreement "disrespectful" is bizarre

If you wish to curate replies, you have many options. First, you can change who can reply.

"Everyone can reply" opens it up to the world
"People you follow" ensures that people you've selected are only able to reply
"People you've mentioned" means just that - specfically.

note that this does NOT stop retweets nor does it stop "quote tweet replies", an annoying type of reply that twitter SHOULD allow you to block if you choose.

Alternatively, you can select individual replies you don't like, and remove those from the conversation. In response to this, i'm picking on the lovely @dranniehickox's reply (i'm happy with it!)

Note: people will see "the author has hidden this, would you like to see?"

Another excellent option is to lock your account. This means that you can 100% control who sees your content, and your content is not re-tweetable.

1 - Tweeting more frequently

Up til Dec, I would tweet on Sundays and remain mostly inactive during the week.

From mid-Jan, switched things up and started tweeting almost daily.

The goal is to share 1 useful thing / day.

Takeaway - Tweeting daily is work, but rewarding.

2 - Building in public

I've been sharing since 2019, but it was never as intense before. My SEO course literally got built while I was tweeting about it.

Takeaway - 💯 for the engaging experience. But it's exhausting if this isn't your main thing. I'm building @delightchathq

What didn't change 👇

• Delivering value to the lives and journey of others.
• Being transparent about progress.
• Being nice to every person who DM'd or emailed me about their struggles in life or business.

Final note - I 100% think people should build in public IF the target audience for what they are building live on Twitter.

7 Tactics To Increase Engagement on Your Threads

People are constantly seeing the same stuff over and over again on their timeline.

This is why you need to learn how to stand out.

When they’re scrolling you need to grab their attention and reel them into something they want to read.

If you think about it, your job is just to get them to click your tweet. Once that’s done, they’ll be reading your other ones in no time.

In order to get them to click you need to show one of these 7 things:

> experience
> value
> lesson
> mystery
> opinion
> numbers

The easiest way to write headlines based off of these things is to write out your audience’s objections.

Then, indirectly counter their objection within your headline (sounds cool right?).

An old copywriting trick 😉

Headline:

Authority shows people you know what you’re doing by telling them a true stat/claim.

People frustrated with the negative sides of Twitter sometimes ask me what they can do about it. Here's a thread with some ideas.

Whether you have 100 followers or a million, you can do something to help… 📢

1) Don't share the ugly stuff, not even to expose its ugliness, if it’s just powerless fools looking for attention. (If you just can’t help yourself, use a screenshot, never a link or RT.)

Do expose the ugly stuff from elected officials and others with power. Frame your tweets to be clear you are calling it out. And use a screenshot, not a link or RT, so you don’t send them any clicks of encouragement.

2) Don’t repeat the framing of the hate-mongers. If someone says, “all Ruritanians are terrorists”, do not reply, “no, Ruritanians are not terrorists”, because all you’re doing is repeating the connection between the word, “Ruritanian”, and “terrorist”.

3) Never share links to hateful headlines & clickbait fishing for outrage clicks. Don’t be a sucker. (If you just can’t help yourself, call it out with a screenshot, so you don’t encourage click-seeking media outlets to deliver more of the same.)

Why are SWs freaking out right now? (This gets bumpy, hold on.)

Twitter came through and deleted a ton of accounts. We are worried that we are next. It could be nudity, it could be retweets, it could be content posted- we don't know. And while Twitter has clear rules, SWs get

Punished often for not even breaking the rules but just existing, so we are on edge.

Twitter/IG/TikTok are ways we advertise and build a base so when we get deplatformed without explanation, we have to start from scratch somewhere else. We lose years of contacts/content.

So, what is driving these tightened restrictions?

It could be a bunch of laws. FOSTA/SESTA came through a few years ago & made it very unsafe for SWs, both online and real time workers. It even crippled businesses like sex educators and therapists. This was a bipartisan effort.

Bc of these laws, platforms censored their content and users. Remember those Craigslist ads? Meet up groups? Bad date lists?

All gone when F/S came through. So let's move to EARN IT. EI is in limbo right now, just waiting on the new term to get rolling. It isn't dead.

EI is gonna be the every man's F/S. EI is gonna censor so many of YOU READING THIS and then what will you do!? (More of that later.)

Fuck. Ok. Then we have Section 230, also just fucking chillin, waiting for passing. 230 is gonna make it to where sites will be held liable

After spending a couple of days engaging with #DisruptTexts and its most vociferous Twitter defenders, here is what I've learned:

1. Many of its most outspoken defenders are also outspoken racists. Almost every one that I spoke to focused on my skin color and whatever stereotypes they could fabricate from it in their responses.

2. On a related note, their primary means of argument seems to be largely ad hominem. There was very little discussion of the actual issues. Instead, insults, insinuations, and mockery seemed to be the rules of the game.

3. I think this need to focus on ad hominem arises from the ideological rather than evidential nature of #DisruptTexts itself. There's a lot of social justice jargon and feeling used to support it, but no talk that I saw about student outcomes or efficacy.

4. Relatedly, there is a religious feel to the whole thing. Heresy is not to be reasoned with but rooted out and destroyed. Only the truly initiated understand the secret gnosis. The plain meaning of words is disregarded in favor of a mystical interpretation.

Twitter is, by far, the fastest way to build a high-quality audience.

Why?

It's quicker to write insightful tweets than it is to produce 10min YouTube videos or 1400-word blog posts.

Here's a thread of actionable tactics from studying the fastest-growing Twitter accounts.

2/ Fast-growing accounts have two things in common:

1. They spend 30+ minutes per day sourcing and refining 1-3 daily tweets. They don't wing what they say, and they typically sit on each idea for a few days.

2. Key: They write tweets that get *retweeted.*

3/ Retweets bring followers.

We polled people to ask why they retweet. They said:

1. "Retweeting is my bookmarking system for ideas."

2. "I retweet when someone's put elegant words to my thoughts."

3. "I want my followers to know I relate to this statement."

4/ So, to get more RTs:

1. Tweet referenceable content that people will refer back to later.

2. Challenge the status quo with elegance and wit.

3. Pick a debate and argue your side with a novel take.

The most RTed tweets? *Threads with advice like this.*

5/ How to write a tweet:

• Open with a hook: Make it counterintuitive or counter-narrative.
• Concise body: Satisfy the craving your hook created.
• End with a punchy zinger: Summarize implications of your finding and what it means for the reader.

THREAT THREAD: Today @United Airlines shared the travel itinerary of Senator @tedcruz with members of the media and as a result, the public at large. His flight information is being included in tweets to/from mainstream media including @CNN and @Acosta.

What I've learnt on the Twitter this year:

1. The State of Hawaii makes Jason Kenney honorary Premier.
2. Rod Phillips and John Tory say Rod nodded off on a TTC streetcar and somehow ended up in St Barts.
3. New Conservative Task Force created to locate their MPs and staff.

4. Michelle Rempel says, because some other Conservative politicians did the wrong thing, now she can't do the wrong thing, because the media will report she did the wrong thing, and that's wrong for the media to do. That's it. That's the funny part.

5. Mike Harris awarded the Order of Ontario, which basically makes the whole thing an attendance award.
6. Doug Ford announces that a large order of McDonald's fries and a box of Philadelphia Cream Cheese will also be awarded the Order of Ontario this year.

7. UCP MLA Tracy Allard says she left the country and flew to Hawaii because her family can't celebrate Christmas properly without eggnog served in genuine coconuts.
8. UCP MLA Jeremy Nixon says he only travelled to Hawaii to personally forward a really funny email joke to Allard

9. After appearing more than an hour late for the press conference he'd called, Jason Kenney says Alberta's vaccination rates are low because Trudeau screwed up and delivered the vaccines early. That's it. That's the funny part.

Be patient when you reach out people (especially the ones with more than 1k followers) on Twitter

You may not get reply for couple of days. This happens cuz the person has many DMs pending and is left with no bandwidth to reply

So don't be like "???" or "will you reply???"

Be more generous in the approach. Follow up more politely with sentences like "looking forward to your reply"

Whenever you send a Cold DM, keep the message short and precise.

Someone in or behind twitter gave me a "this account violated the twitter rules..." supposedly for this reply (image 1 at bottom of thread). I appealed with "A question is hate?" They upheld their decision with: "Our support team has

determined that a violation did take place, and therefore we will not overturn our decision."

To proceed I deleted / removed the reply as prompted and was informed of a temporary limit of tweets, replies, likes, etc. for 6 hours (image 2). I could still access twitter and

see content. To test the restriction, i clicked the like button on a tweet and then was immediately greeted with the limit page but it increased 11 hours (image 3). After that i was then unable to browse twitter content and was met with the same "we've limited your

account" message every time i re-loaded it or clicked "continue to twitter" (image 4, @ 1am est)

In my experience, when a construct like a clique, fraternity, employer, or another attempts to elicit an emotional reaction or accept some aimless quest to divine the actual

cause or just toil in fear of a whipping for an unkwon reason at some unkown time, it's time to look elsewhere to maintain interest as who knows when, why, what, and how it will impose next. And that experience tells me accepting such nonsense terms brings more nonsense.
