COLD WEATHER ADVICE, FROM A MONTANA YOTE TO ALL MY TEXAS FRIENDS STRUGGLING RN!

1) Cotten Kills. Cotten fabrics absorb water and stay wet. Wet will make you cold. Stay as dry as possible and if any under where or socks become wet change into dry ones right away.

 2) layers. Wear as many layers that is comfortable. It is much easier to stay warm than it is to warm back up.

3) close all the doors in the house and isolate to one room. Your body produces heat! Use it!

4) gas is cheeper than electricity. If the power is off-
But the gas’s is still on isolate to the kitchen, and turn on the oven! Many gas stoves can be turned on with a hand lighter. Take caution ⚠️ as you don’t want to cause a gas fire.

5) buddy up! Yes even the dog. Mammals make body heat so get all the pills and blankets and sleep-
Together. It’s -12 and no heat can be very serious. If someone dose go out make sure they remove any and all cloths with snow on them before returning to the warm blanket. NO MOISTURE!

6) tent time! Have a tent? Set it up in the living room as your new hot space with body heat
7) help yourself neighbor. These are very serious times. Covid is still ongoing so take precautions but if you know anyone who is currently living alone and low risk without power could be life threatening. Mask up and invite them in to add to your body heat It could save someone
Montana is no stranger to cold weather. We have systems in place to help eachother when the weather gets brutal. Here the pipes are frozen rn and it’s not uncommon to ask your neighbors for a shower and a few matches. Helping eachother is our greatest tool in times of adversity
8)if you get stuck somewhere in your car do not leave it running! This will kill the battery and waste gas. Turn on the car for ten minutes on and ten minuets off. This will keep you warm enough until help can arrive. If it was an accident invite the other party into your car
9) don’t let your food spoil in the fridge! If the power goes out move freezer food outside and fridge food in the garage to keep it cold!
10) store out of heaters?? Head to your local agriculture supply store! Coop heaters and barn heaters are cheap alternatives! Heat light bulbs are cheap! Please keep in mind though there is a real fire hazard with these do not use unsupervised! Do /not/ leave on unsupervised!!!
11) seems obvious but it’s easy to forget that snow melts! When returning from outside remove all clothes with any snow in them. Leave them at the front door do not track snow in the house you can step on later. Wear under armor to wick sweat and water away from your body
12) OPEN THE CABINETS! Your pipes are getting cold. Open the cabinets to the main part of the house to help keep them warm and from bursting
13) if you can help it don't let your gas tank go below half way empty. Gas dosen't freeze like water and if much easier go keep the car running on a full tank of gass than a half tank or quarter tank where the moisture can freeze the pipes
14) Car stuck in the snow? Pile up DIRT, potting soil, salt etc behind fhs wheels of the car. This will help you get traction if the ice and snow is to slippery. Drive 10 miles under the speed limit in conditions like this without snow tires. Better late than stuck.
15) dog driving you mad because you can't exercise him? Give him food and brain eriching games to simulate his mind. This will keep him calm even though he's confused his routine is changed. A water bottle with wholes cut in it makes for a fun cheep food game
16) use the snow as water! Pile snow in the bathtub. Disinfect by boiling it or using a brita filter if you have one.
Don't use the tub if your pipes are freezing use a separate bucket instead. Use your best judgement for your house!
Q) what if my gloves are wet but my hands are cold?

A) ditch them! If you have a choice between damp clothes and no clothes put on your birthday suit and get under a warm dry blanket!
17) if you suspect Hypothermia in someone here are some first steps
-remove all there clothes, chances are some are wet. including socks and underwear.
-slow heat. Wrap them in layers of blankets and let them warm up
-do NOT use hot water to warm them up
-do NOT let them sleep

Offered a guy a ride from Yaba to Obalende this morning. Just as we're approaching Alagomeji, uncle asked me if he can drive. Said he's not comfortable being driven by a woman. I parked and told him to come and take the wheel. Once he got down, I just zoomed off. Arrant nonsense

Funny thing is the guy is quite young. He can't be more than 25. How can someone that young have this sort of mentality?

I actually did not think that the guy could have wanted to get away with my car at the time. Now that I think of it though, that's a big possibility. We need to be careful out there. These thieves now have different ways of operating

Remember: Just because an idea is old doesn't mean it's good.

Knowing whether old ideas are more likely to be good requires understanding whether conditions have changed in important ways.

Horse archery was an amazing method of warfare for over a thousand years...then people invented guns, and suddenly this great idea that had stood the test of time became obsolete.

Then again, when underlying conditions don't change much, tried-and-true approaches are probably better.

"Learning the lessons of history" usually just means assuming ergodicity and stationarity in an informal time-series model...

Having spent 2020 telling covid denalists that they were overly optimistic about the pandemic, I now look forward to spending 2021 telling covid maximalists that they are overly pessimistic about the end of the pandemic.

Telling a denialist in May that we shouldn't open bars back up = telling a maximalist in February that we should open schools back up.

Look, folks, the math is straightforward. ~13% of Americans have been vaccinated as of this

And the 7 day average continues to rise; we're approach 2 million vaccine doses per day. Meaning that we'll double that ~13% much faster than the two months it took us to get there.


So it's entirely reasonable that absent any other intervention, we should expect to hit ~30% vaccinated by the end of March.

Overall I think Labour will be a bit disappointed with how the ‘relaunch’ has started. Labour have given themselves a mountain to climb anyway through a year of inaction but the speech today lacked coherence, purpose and distinction from the government.

Starmer is (funnily enough) making a lot of the same mistakes Corbyn made in 2019. He is listing a ‘bold’ set of policy proposals that come across as disjointed and lacking connection to Britain’s priorities.

The policies themselves were basically good, I wouldn’t argue against them. But I would cringe whenever Labour came out with spending proposal after spending proposal in 2019 without any rationale or connection to a larger economic strategy. That’s what Starmer did today.

The questions that voters will have about Starmer’s speech are the same ones that voters will have had about Corbyn’s 2019 manifesto: why are these policies your priority, how can we afford them and why aren’t we doing these already?

The first one needs to be answered by diagnosing Britain’s problems and their causes. He doesn’t have to diagnose all of them. For the purpose of today he could have picked three that feed off each other: inequality, stagnant income growth and stagnant productivity.

Planning for Overlord and Neptune had a serious snag, how to get troops from LSTs onto the beach as simply ramming them onto the beaches and dropping the ramp was known to damage the exceptionally vulnerable LSTs and felt to be unsustainable in the mid to long term. /2


LSTs were essential in sustaining Overlord's progress and were a subject of major headaches in the planning phase, and a real subject of friction when it came to launching additional amphibious operations such as Dragoon.

A single LSTs loss represented a capability nick. /3


So, logic dictated, we don't really want these remarkable but rare and highly valuable vessels constantly doing beach landings, we want something to act as a medium between ship to shore, and in came the (mostly) American designed Rhino. /4

I really enjoy writing right inside the Figma template. It helps give me a good sense of exactly how much "real estate" I have/have left before my time us up and I'm out of space.

Before I publish my Atomic Essay on Twitter, I use the Edit/Photo Markup function on the iPhone to highlight standout sentences.

These are usually power-phrases: things the reader skims and thinks, "That's interesting," prompting them to read more.

1. The piece is SUPER actionable and lends itself well to the thread format (lots of bullets, quick points, lists, etc.)

Four hours south of Aswan in Lower Nubia, right by the Nile, is a region dotted with temple complexes built more than 3,000 years ago. Some like the temples of Amada, Derr, and Beit el-Wali go as far back as 1500 BC.

A little further south, not far from the border with Sudan, is another complex dedicated to Ramses II, Hathor, and Nefertari in the village of Ipsambul, better known locally as Abu Sunbul and internationally as Abu Simbel. These go back to the 13th century BC.

Djeser-Djeseru, also known as the mortuary temple of Hatshepsut in Upper Egypt also dates to 1400 BC. Over 500 years older is the nearby Mentuhotep II, also a mortuary temple. Both were dedicated to the cult of Amun Ra, besides their respective pharaohs.

Far older is the Ġgantija complex of Malta. Going as far back as 3600 BC, this one comprises of two temples entirely made of stone and enclosed in a stone wall. From the figures therein, it's understood to be a site of some kind of a fertility cult worship.

Dating from the same period are the limestone megaliths of Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra, both said to have once hosted ritualistic sacrifices as part of the same fertility cult worship as found in the Ġgantija complex. Malta has some of the oldest temple complexes in Europe.
