Recently I posted a ridiculous painting of trump portrayed as a hero... I absolutely suggested that, by portraying him as a hero, the artist should bear some responsibility for inciting violence.

By this I did not mean legal responsibility, but rather a personal responsibility.

It probably will not surprise many of you, but I am an artist.

Art is definitely protected by the first amendment.

I have said

before that those with an audience and any influence bear some responsibility for what they put out. That’s the top of the info supply chain. If you use your influence to peddle disinformation /hate speech and incite violence, then the results are on you.

I hope this helps clarify my intent.

So, here's a story. You've heard me talk about my cousin in Arizona before. (A ton of you sewed masks & sent them to her for distribution to the local Navajo community, thank you!) Post-2016, she took a look at her AZ community & decided to get involved in local politics.

She started looking up who to talk to in her precinct, and realized that there was no Democratic precinct captain/committee member for her precinct. In fact, there were a *ton* of precincts where no one had run for the Dem. precinct. Every precinct had a GOP captain though.

For non-USians, every precinct has both a Democratic & Repubican precinct captain or committee person. They campaign on behalf of their party's candidates. Talk to voters, canvass door-to-door, share info about voting. They're critical for GOTV efforts & it's an elected position.

Precincts are tiny compared to things like counties or cities. You really get to know the voters, because they're literally your neighbors. But because it's not a role with power, a lot of precinct roles are vacant where there's a clear (or assumed) one-party advantage.

So my cousin and her husband (who had just retired) got involved. She ran for precinct captain in the next election and won. They recruited more Dems to run for these vacant precinct captain seats. They started going to local party meetings, learning the system, getting informed.

In Feb 2020 County Commissioners voted 5-0 to deny entry to US Customs & Border Protection

Then the County actually SUED Trumps WH claiming the building of the wall was a racist assault on residents

Since 1920 Zapata County hadn't voted for a Republican President
In 2016 Clinton trounced Trump winning 2-1
Yet in 2020 Trump flipped a 33-pt loss
into a 5-pt win?

We should accept this without question?

Especially considering that in 2020 Dems won EVERY OTHER RACE in Zapata

Zapata County had 725 new voters

2016 Votes for Prez =3142
2020 Votes for Prez = 3867

Did these new voters all vote for Trump? Could be since Trump got over 1000 new votes

2016 Trump Votes =1029
2020 Trump Votes = 2032

When I looked at Kentucky I found a county with more registered voters than age-eligible people. Same in Zapata.

In 2018 they estimated 6,683 people above the age of 18
In 2020 they had 8,257 registered voters

Zapata seems to have 24% MORE registered voters than people over 18?

I've seen a lot of praise for this Kevin Williamson piece on Trump and the GOP. I obviously agree with the "Trump is bad" sentiment, which accounts for its popularity among Never Trumpers. However....

There are a couple massive flaws worth highlighting, because they're characteristic of the poisons that inhabit even many species of anti-Trump conservatism.

The first his Williamson's whitewashing of William F. Buckley's support for white supremacy:

Williamson justifies Buckley's support for disenfranchising blacks on the grounds that Buckley also wanted to disenfranchise "unqualified" whites.

But that was not on the table. What was on the table was measures to equalize voting for blacks and whites. Buckley opposed them.

And while his view "evolved," that means that he gave up on restoring de jure segregation after he lost his fight to preserve it.

His principle didn't change.

The betrayal yesterday is of no surprise to me. I had hoped for the best, but truly expected his worst, and that’s what we got.

Thank you to @rmneiss for letting us play with the “Official Statement”generator yesterday. His @realpresssecbot was one of the primary inspirations for this account, so this is kind of a perfect bookend.

I started @TrumpEmail because I couldn't believe the tenor of the vitriol and the brazenness of the lies when Trump emails unexpectedly started showing up in my inbox. I was surprised nobody else was already putting these into the public record and took it on as a pet project.

1/ The SCOTUS decision in favor of the "religious freedom" to gather in large groups despite the pandemic is part of a larger effort to elevate so called religious liberty above all other freedoms, but not in the way most agree with...

2/ Most everyone would agree that people's right to worship as they see fit should be protected, to believe as they wish, free from persecution, etc. That is not what this is, or what other religious liberty cases are about...

3/ These cases are about elevating the rights of persons claiming to be acting on the basis of religious belief, to engage in activity that injures others, without consequence. So here it means the right to worship in large groups even if it endangers public health...

4/ In other cases it means the right to discriminate against customers if you have a 'religious objection' to their sexual orientation, gender identity, etc. And what's especially disturbing is the real endgame, which few talk about...

5/ This is really about gutting civil rights protections. If you ask virtually any right wing conservative jurist, or commentator or politician, they will admit, if you push, that they don't think civil rights law should ever have applied to private businesses...
