Fact 23: Not all "cuneiform writing" actually meant something. Sometimes just imitating the general appearance of cuneiform-like signs could be enough — why bother to learn the whole complex writing system if others can't read it anyway?

 Such “pseudo-cuneiform” text is known from some seals and charms, like these Lamaštu amulets (https://t.co/JBcbmybEmH & https://t.co/fByNIVOzF5). Presumably the intended viewers couldn't read cuneiform, so it didn't matter if the signs were nonsense. They still looked impressive!

In fact, some authors have suggested that “pseudo-texts are relatively rare in cuneiform” (Veldhuis, via Houston 2018) — of course excluding modern fake antiquities, which we already mentioned in a previous thread a few days ago: https://t.co/PCSBlc8gjK
Certainly they seem to be a lot harder to find than I expected! The few images above are pretty much all we found while researching (a.k.a. googling) material for this thread. I'm sure more are known in the literature, but my usually decent web search skills are failing me here.
So instead of sticking to my original topic, let me digress a bit. Because what I did find instead was sort of interesting too, if not quite what I was planning to make this thread about. 😃
At first I tried just searching for “pseudocuneiform” on Google, but the first result I got (after Wikipedia) was this patent for a “pseudo-cuneiform tactile display” for blind readers: https://t.co/yh2q3tV7Sk 😮 And the rest of the results weren’t much more relevant, either.
Another curious search result I got was this medal from 1987, featuring Nebuchadnezzar II and Saddam Hussein(!) and described by the @britishmuseum as having “pseudocuneiform inscriptions” on both sides: https://t.co/gtsoDbvbzu I think they're wrong, though!
The inscription on the reverse seems to be actual Old Babylonian cuneiform, with the Sumerian name of the city of Babylon, KA.DINGIR.RA{ki}, clearly readable on the right. Alas, the rest of the inscription (except for the sign AN on the lower left) is worn out and hard to read.
Luckily https://t.co/duCpvWzMe1 shows the top three signs to be ki-šár-ra, meaning "of the whole world" in Sumerian. What I'm unsure of is the sign before them that looks like U+AB. I'm 90% sure it's a real sign, since the rest of the text makes sense, but I don't recognize it.
In context, I'd rather like to read it as ezen = "festival", but it doesn't quite match any variant of that sign listed in Labat. Maybe it's a (modern) scribal error?
Also, can anyone here read the non-English text on the obverse? I think it might be stylized Arabic, but since none of us can actually read even normal Arabic… (I know, being able to read Akkadian but not Arabic seems kind of backwards. What can I say? It’s on my to do list.🙄)
Anyway, sorry for the random digression. Unless of course you find trying to decipher a modern cuneiform inscription from the 1980s as interesting as I do, in which case I'm not sorry at all. 😁 And if you know any good references for ancient pseudo-cuneiform text, let me know!

2020 marks the start of the quantum dot revolution.

Completely ignoring the fact that "photocatalytic generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) from quantum dots (QDs) has been widely reported."

Results: It was found that whereas singlet oxygen (1O2) was not produced by photoexcited QDs, superoxide anion(O2− )and hydroxyl radicals(OH) were generated by QDs, especially in the presence of a physiological concentration of electron donating agent including NADH.

Using cell metabolic activity assays and various probes of ROS generation, the formation of ROS in cellular environments was demonstrated.

Conclusion: Illumination of QD-treated cells and bacteria with light did affect viability. The above results, together with those of assays in the presence of various scavengers of specific ROS, indicate that the formation of ROS by QDs mainly proceeded via electron transfer.

THREAD ON IRONFLY

These days the most preferred strategy for option sellers due to improved margins is IRONFLY. It's essentially a short straddle with long strangle. Long strangle acting as 'WINGS', which help in capping the unlimited risk associated with a short straddle.(1/n)

You can also view the position as a combination of Cal & Put credit spreads, if that makes it more easy for you.

There are 3 important things to understand while trading this strategy:

1) Initial size of the Wings
2) Risk Management
3) Adjustments

Since we are selling an ATM straddle, the 1st question is how far our wings should be? Ideally i sell .50 delta straddle & buy .20 or .10 OTM strangle, depending on my view on volatility. So the distance of wings depends on the IV setup. Higher the IVs, greater the distance.(3/n)

If you don't understand greeks, then ideally with 30 days to expiry (dte), wings should be around 300pts either side. If your trading in weekly then it should be not more than 200pts. Higher the premiums, higher the distance as we have more cushion of theta. (4/n)

It is important to understand that we need to reduce the distance of wings with time so as to manage our RISK in gap openings or sudden volatile move. So for eg. if you started with 300pt wings with 30dte, the wings wouldn't give the same protection when there is 7dte. (5/n)

THREAD: On the full-fledged process of responding to a Revise-And-Resubmit (R&R).

I have written pieces of the process, but I hadn't actually written a thread or a blog post showcasing how all my blog posts fit with one another. I teach this process when I give workshops.

So here's what I do (now), and let me share a lesson from my past lives:

DO NOT SIT ON R&Rs.

I know, they're painful and scary and sometimes we don't know if our paper will get rejected in the end.

But remember, an R&R means an OPPORTUNITY to get your paper published.

Sitting on R&Rs, leaving them for later, and not prioritizing them has gotten me fewer publications. I know this for a fact. I am not ashamed of admitting that I have sometimes felt that I will not be capable of responding to multiple (often conflicting) comments.

HOWEVER...

Sustained, frequent advice from professors who are senior to me (though I am senior myself now too) is always the same and on-point:

The goal is the R&R.

You're not getting a desk rejection.

You are getting your work read, reviewed carefully, thought about, responded to.

What do I do now (and have been doing for the past few years, with success)

When I get the R&R (the "decision letter"), I make sure to calm down, because I am always afraid I'm going to get nasty comments. These have been (luckily) very rarely present in my latest submissions.

Planning for Overlord and Neptune had a serious snag, how to get troops from LSTs onto the beach as simply ramming them onto the beaches and dropping the ramp was known to damage the exceptionally vulnerable LSTs and felt to be unsustainable in the mid to long term. /2


LSTs were essential in sustaining Overlord's progress and were a subject of major headaches in the planning phase, and a real subject of friction when it came to launching additional amphibious operations such as Dragoon.

So, logic dictated, we don't really want these remarkable but rare and highly valuable vessels constantly doing beach landings, we want something to act as a medium between ship to shore, and in came the (mostly) American designed Rhino. /4

Not realising that the soothsayer is none other than Sakthi Matha, Surya ignored Her. Angered by his indifference, Devi Karumariamman immediately retreated. Bhagwan Surya lost His glory and the earth plunged into darkness. 3/n


Bhagwan Surya then realised His folly and pleaded forgiveness from Devi Karumariamman. In order to pacify mother Karumariamman, Suryadev said that His rays would fall on Her directly twice in a year and touch her feet. (in the month of Panguni (March- April) & during (Sep - Oct)


Mother Karumari Amman is worshipped here in two forms.A swayambu (self manifested) with only head visible above the ground and another one in a graceful sitting posture with all Parasakthi features,with four arms holding skull, sword, trishul, udukkai (damru). 5/n

Some quick thoughts on Sam Gyimah's resignation after conversations with various Conservative MPs: 1) the chances of a second referendum are a lot higher than I thought:

2) At this point, if you are a young and ambitious Tory MP it is now so overwhelmingly in your interest to vote against the withdrawal agreement. V v hard to see how Julian Smith can cap rebellion at under 100:

3) Really just to reiterate 1) Gyimah is the kind of "No, never gonna rebel" vaguely pro-EU Tory you'd need to get on side to outweigh Labour Leavers and Real Concerners.
