During the 19th century, Jamaica was essentially used as one large plantation by the British.

Most, if not all of the Black residents were enslaved. In fact, Slaves outnumbered Whites 12:1 on the island.

Racial tensions were at all time highs.

Rumors began to circulate around the island that emancipation was on the way for the slaves.

A rumor created by Baptist missionaries to try to pacify the slaves and to thwart any revolts.

The truth, once realized, only angered the slaves even further.

Christian & Baptist missionaries thought their religion would essentially keep the slaves in check.

What they didn't count on was the slaves taking their Christianity and mixing it with Afro-Jamaican religion called "Myalism".

If you're knowledgeable about Jamaican culture and slang, then you would be familiar with the term "Duppy".

This term originates from the Myal Religion, and is believed to be one of the two souls a human gets when they are born into the world.

Points to ponder about Shahjahan

1. Shahjahan was a cruel king. On becoming the king, Shahjahan imprisoned his step mother Nur Jahan. He sent brother Shahryar to the gallows. He had earlier got rid of brother Khusrau. Now he got Khusrau's sons Dawar and Garshasp executed.

Jahangir's brother Daniyal had died earlier. Shahjahan now killed Daniyal's sons Tahmuras and Hoshang ― all on 23 January 1628.

2. He loved only violence and sex. He has no artistic sensibilities. *He raped his own daughter Jahanara and justified it, saying that a gardener

must enjoy the fruit he produced.*

3. A ruffian by nature, Shahjahan refused to be tutored by the plethora of tutors appointed from time to time. His misdeeds of dacoity and arson throughout India, while in revolt against his emperor father Jehangir, made the latter record,

in sheer despair and anguish, that his son Shahjahan was a wretch and a scoundrel.

How dare any historian ignore the father's estimate of his own son and call the miscreant a noble lover of art and finer things.

Mumtaz-ul-Zamani (so called Mumtaz Mahal) except few Bollywood films. Mumtaz-ul-Zamani was only one among Shah Jahan's various wifes and hundreds of sex slaves. To marry her he killed her husband. *She died giving birth to her 14th child. (She died in Burhanpur, 1000 kms away

(Excuse the typo above!) Tom Barry, beyond the legend, was quite a contradictory character. He was the son of a policeman, who joined the British Army in WWI (when he served in the Royal Artillery in Mesopotamia (Iraq) against the Ottoman Turks.

It was pointed out by @swgannon here yesterday that when he returned to Ireland in 1919, he attempted to join the Imperial Civil Service, but failed the exam. He also attended the first Armistice Day commemorations in Cork in which the Union flag was raised.

But at some point he had a change of heart and approached the local IRA (Cork 3 Batt) to join them. Naturally they, led by Tom Hales at the time, were suspicious of him. But they allowed him in for his military training in order to train their men.

However Hales was arrested and Barry got on better with his replacement Charlie Hurley. Barry was involved in the Toureen ambush in October 1920 but not in command. Kilmichael was his first large action as column leader.
