Our #VIADUCT_EU Guest Lecture: "EU-Turkey-Russia Energy Security Realm" is starting now!

With @MarcoSiddi (@FIIA_fi), Suhnaz Yilmaz from @kocuniversity

Follow the highlights here!

"Energy security is traditionally defined as a government's efforts to ensure energy supply at a good price"

- Suhnaz Yilmaz from @kocuniversity

/2
"The EU adopts a comprehensive approach, going beyond the notion of uninterrupted supply and affordability to highlight issues of sustainability and environmental concerns"

- Suhnaz Yilmaz from @kocuniversity

/3
"While #COVID19 has posed challenges, foreign policy dynamics have made unclear how sustainability and environment concerns will factor into recovery"

- Suhnaz Yilmaz from @kocuniversity

/4
"World Population is expected to increase (on current trends) from 7.4bn to more the 9bn in 2040. It is not only a growing population, but a rapidly urbanising population"

- Suhnaz Yilmaz from @kocuniversity

/5
"Global energy needs will expand by 40% by 2040, adding the equivalent of another China or India to the global demand"

- Suhnaz Yilmaz from @kocuniversity

/6
"With the increasing dependence of OECD countries on oil local to Turkey, Turkey's role has increased as a diversification option for Europe to diversify its energy supply from Russia"

- Suhnaz Yilmaz from @kocuniversity

/7
After the excellent presentation of Suhnaz Yilmaz from @kocuniversity, we turn to @MarcoSiddi from @FIIA_fi to give his perspective on the issue of energy politics in the Black Sea region

/8
"Turkish gas demand is significant, but the EU's import dependence is substantial: Russia plays a very important role in this"

- @MarcoSiddi from @FIIA_fi

/9
"Ukraine is a consumer, but also an important transit country. In the 2000s, 80% of Russian gas exports went through Ukraine. Now, due to NordStream, this number is still as high as 50%"

- @MarcoSiddi from @FIIA_fi

/10
"The 2014 Ukraine Crisis and the state of conflict led to new concerns in Europe about the security of energy supply from Russia"

- @MarcoSiddi from @FIIA_fi

/11
On that note, this #VIADUCT_EU Guest Lecture moves into the Q&A section

/12
That's it for this #VIADUCT_EU Guest Lecture, but we're not done yet!

1/10 With respect, multiple straw men here:
A) If you mean by "legally questionable" either that Senate is barred by constitution from trying an official impeached while in office, or that there are even very strong arguments against it, I have to differ...

2/10 Constitutional structure, precedent & any fair reading of original intent dictate that argument for jurisdiction is far stronger than argument against. On original intent, see

3/10 If you mean argument against jurisdiction is plausible, sure, it's plausible. It's just weak. In practical fact, Senate can try Trump now, find him guilty & disqualify him from future office if there are sufficient votes. And no court would presume to overturn that result

4/10 b) The argument from resources is awfully hard to take seriously. Fewer than a dozen House members act as Managers for a few weeks. They are staffed, as are Senators hearing case, by folks whose job it is to do stuff like this...

5/10 Yes, Senate floor time will be taken up. But it's past time for us to stop thinking of members of either house as feeble, fluttering, occupants of a nationally-funded convalescent home. There are nearly 500 of these people with 1000s of staff and a bunch of big buildings...
A quick thread on #Myitsone dam & #MyanmarChinaRelations in light of the SAC announcement that they would be restarting some stalled Chinese projects in Burma. This announcement has led to speculation about Myitsone, which has been suspended since 2011. Let’s go! ➡️ China has

consistently misunderstood & underestimated popular opposition to Myitsone. First and foremost, to the Burmese people, this is about the “mother river” of Burma - the Irrawaddy- and it’s nearly sacred importance to them as a lifeline of their country. This is what drove the

organic anti-dam movement that started locally in Kachin but +/- 2007 was effectively picked up & nationalized by Burmese environmental CSOs. Instead of understanding this, the Chinese lashed out and blamed the United States when Thein Sein suspended the project. I assure you

the USG was as surprised as China when the project was suspended. But China never believed it was truly the desire of the Burmese people that stopped the project. Today, the dam doesn’t make sense economically for Beijing & will definitely alienate Burmese, yet they stubbornly

continue to push it. Why? Let’s unpack a bit further. In addition to Myitsone, there were other campaigns & protests targeting Chinese projects such as Letpadaung copper mine & Kyaukphyu pipeline, port & SEZ. While these campaigns had varying levels off effect, none was as

The YouTube algorithm that I helped build in 2011 still recommends the flat earth theory by the *hundreds of millions*. This investigation by @RawStory shows some of the real-life consequences of this badly designed AI.

This spring at SxSW, @SusanWojcicki promised "Wikipedia snippets" on debated videos. But they didn't put them on flat earth videos, and instead @YouTube is promoting merchandising such as "NASA lies - Never Trust a Snake". 2/
