By the blessings of Sri Maha Periyava, I have been able to do brain operations in India continuously in the government General Hospital in Madras

 from 1964 to 1992 and after I retired from government service, I have been in private hospitals for more than a decade. What is perhaps equally important is that I have been able to involve throughout these forty years in training several dozens of young doctors in neurosurgery
in the General Hospital, Chennai from 1964 to 1992 and in Apollo Hospital, Chennai recognized for DNB qualification in neurosurgery from 1992 onwards. In those days when a Brahmin boy went abroad and returned he was supposed to go to Rameswaram and have a bath in the ocean for
purification. Somehow although we are an orthodox family, I could not do this. Soon after my return I had to undergo surgery for hernia. Then I got married. Later I became very busy in hospital work and I could never get the time to plan a trip to Rameswaram. Sometime in 1975 I
went to Kancheepuram with my younger sister and niece to have darsanam of Maha Periyava. By that time I had already been abroad several times. An elderly Brahmin gentleman who had just come from Nigeria was present too to have darshan. There was a crowd of about sixty or seventy
persons and Maha Periyava talked for about an hour on my problem of going to Rameswaram. I am giving below the gist of the conversation His Holiness had with me.
His Holiness, while addressing the crowd of devotees: “This elderly gentleman had come from Nigeria to ask me if he
should do Prayaschittam for going abroad”. Turning to me he smiled “Probably, Kalyanaraman also had come because he has a selfish interest in this as to whether he should also go to Rameswaram”.

His Holiness: “How many versions of Ramayanam are there in India?”

SKR: “Probably
about a hundred”.
His Holiness: “There are about 300 languages and dialects in this country and probably an equal number of versions of Ramayanam. How did Rama and Sita return from Lanka to Ayodhya?”

SKR: By Pushpakavimanam.

His Holiness: “That is right. It is very interesting
that neither in Valmiki Ramayanam nor in any of the other 300 versions of Ramayanam there is any mention that Rama and others did prayaschittam after returning from Lanka. You may say that they travelled by air and prayaschittam is required only if you travel by sea.
Then He
mentioned the name of a Frenchman and asked if I had heard about him. I replied in negative.
His Holiness: “This man was a historian. He lived in India at the time of early Chola kings. At that time one of the daughters of the reigning King could not get suitable bridegroom in
India. In those days Hindu Kings were ruling over countries now known as Cambodia, Thailand, and Indonesia etc.” Have you been to Bangkok?

SKR: Yes.

HH: “Have you been to the famous Buddha temple there, which contains many pictures depicting the story of Ramayana in the
prakarams of the temple?”

SKR: Yes.

HH: “So the Chola king in south India chose a prince in Cambodia as his son-in-law. The prince came to India and married the princess. The royal couple accompanied by a large retinue of purohits, maids in waiting and servants returned by ship
to the bridegroom’s kingdom. After staying a few days there the purohits returned by ship to India. This French historian has given a very detailed day by day account of this marriage in his book. He has not mentioned that the purohits did Prayaschittam either on reaching
Cambodia or on returning to India.

Then His Holiness asked me: “How long does it take to go to America nowadays?”

SKR: It would take about eighteen hours and if there is a break of journey in London about twenty four hours.

Then His Holiness enlightened us:
“That is the real
point. In the Shastras it has been specifically stated that if one did not do nityakarmanushtanam (daily religious rituals like sandhya vandanam, samitadanam, agnihotram) for three days continuously one had to do prayaschittam. In those days practically everyone did their daily
religious duties. The only time they could not do so was when they travelled by sea as pure fresh water was not available for bath. That is why if they travelled by sea (for more than three days), they had to do prayaschittam. Probably the purohits reached Cambodia in two days
and Rama reached Ayodhya in a few hours. Therefore, there was no need for prayaschittam. If you apply that rule today, then some people in the present audience will need to do prayaschittam several times a year for omitting to do sandhya vandanam for three days in succession! One
need not go abroad to qualify oneself for doing prayaschittam!”

This is again a remarkable example of how His Holiness interprets the scriptures and gives simple anecdotes step by step to illustrate the point discussed, to a lay audience. Needless to say I was very much relieved
that I had not “sinned” by not going to Rameswaram! The occasion also reinforced my resolve never to omit Sandhya Vandanam or reciting the Gayathri manthram even for a single day.

His Holiness continued:
“Some people say that you should do prayaschittam only if you go to another
island. Is Africa an island?

SKR: Yes.

His Holiness: “No, Africa and Asia form single large mass of land. Only about a hundred years ago when the Suez Canal was dug by the Englishman, it technically became an island. In fact Australia, Asia, Africa and Europe were all one large
land mass and in the millions of years that have gone by, the land mass drifted away from one another with the oceans coming in between them and formed individual continents.”
Here again was another example of the vast knowledge of history, geography and geology that His Holiness
had mastered. He concluded by saying that neither the gentleman from Nigeria nor Dr. Kalyanaraman need to do prayaschittam because they have travelled for less than three days to reach India but everyone certainly had to do it if they had omitted Sandhya Vandanam for three days
or more!

There is an organisation in America called the Paul Brunton mission, extolling the British journalist who came to see the Sages here. Brunton had Sri Maha Periyava’s darshan and on his advice went to Ramana Maharishi whose gracious glance he received. Every year


the students who were members of this association, would visit Kanchipuram and stay on for 10 or 15 days, immersing themselves in Periyava’s blissful darshan. The Group had come as usual one year. One day, Periyava was seated under the Night-flowering jasmine (Pavazhamalli) tree,

which used to be in SriMatham in those days and was giving them the darshan. Periyava was sitting with his eyes closed. The American boys were seated around Periyava with their eyes closed in Meditation. It was very silent, not a whisper anywhere. The attendants Balu Mama and

Vedapuri Mama moved away and came out of SriMatham. A car came to stop there. A middle-aged couple and their three children got down. It was clear from the clothes they wore that the children were thoroughly westernised. They looked at Balu Mama and Vedapuri Mama who were

standing there. Old, discoloured dhoties, hair knotted in a tuft, stripes of sacred ash, rudraksha beads around their neck. The ultra-modern kids found them amusing. “Who are these ancients? Some saints around here it seems? Wonder if he too is like this? Dirty people,

#MahaPeriyava This man was the miser of all misers! He was of course a wealthy man but would not spend a penny. He had come for Sri Maha Periyava's darshan. With his right hand over his mouth, he started speaking emotionally. I have blood pressure and diabetes for a long time.


Now, I have been diagnosed with cancer too. I am suffering a lot. Periyava must please suggest a parikaram (remedy).
"Will you do as I say", asked Periyava.
"Certainly", said the man.
"It might be difficult.”
"Never mind. I want to just get rid of these diseases. I will do

whatever Periyava instructs. All I want is to be cured of this BP, diabetes and cancer.” saying this, he wiped his eyes.
Periyava said, "In the well, there is water. But the well never drinks up the water claiming ownership over it. Trees bear fruits, but they never say, this

fruit belongs to me. Only I will eat it. The cow gives milk, but never drinks up its own milk. Several trees and plants yield vegetables, but they keep nothing for themselves. As you can see, plants and animals themselves are doing so much paropakaaram (service to others). They

say man has got six senses. So, how much more paropakaaram must he do? You have lot of money, but you are neither spending it for yourself, nor are you doing any dharma (good deeds) from it. The sins from your last birth have befallen you in the form of diseases. If you have to

மாதந்தோறும் இருமுறை, அமாவசைக்குப் பின், பௌர்ணமிக்குப் பின் என்று வளர்பிறை, தேய்பிறைக்குப் பின் வரும் திரயோதசி-13ஆம் நாள் #பிரதோஷம். அத்தினங்களில் மாலை 4.30-6.00 மணி வரையிலான நேரம் பிரதோஷ காலமாகும். தேவர்களும் அசுரர்களும் பாற்கடலைக் கடைந்தபோது பல நல்ல விஷயங்கள் தோன்றியபோதும்


அதனுடனே ஆலகால விஷமும் தோன்றியது. அனைத்து உயிர்களையும் காப்பாற்ற சிவபெருமான் அவ்விஷத்தை உண்டார். தன் கணவரின் உடலில் விஷம் பரவுவதைக்கண்ட பார்வதி தேவி தன் கரங்களால் அவரைத் தொட விஷம் சிவனின் நெஞ்சுக் குழியிலேயே நின்றுவிட அவர் நீலகண்டனானார். இந்த நேரம் தான் #பிரதோஷகாலம் என்று


வணங்கப்படுகிறது. சிவபெருமான் கைலாயத்தில் தேவர்களுக்கும் முனிவர்களுக்கும் திருநடம் புரிந்து காட்சியளிக்கிறார். அப்பொழுது கலைமகள் வீணை வாசிக்க, லட்சுமி தேவி பாடுகிறாள். திருமால் மிருதங்கம் வாசிக்க இந்திரன் புல்லாங்குழல் ஊதுகிறார். பிரம்மதேவர் தாளமிட தேவர்கள் முனிவர்கள் யாவரும்

கைலாயம் வந்து இறைவனை வணங்குகிறார்கள் என்பது புராணம். சிவாலயங்களில் அந்நேரத்தில் சிவனுக்குப் பால், தேன், தயிர், சந்தனம், பன்னீர், திருநீறு மற்றும் பஞ்சாமிர்தத்தால் அபிஷேகம் செய்து வில்வம், அரளி, தாமரை, மல்லிகை மலர்களால் அர்ச்சனை செய்து பின் தீபாராதனை செய்து வழிபாடு நடக்கிறது.

இறைவனுடன் கூடவே அவருடைய வாகனமான நந்தி தேவருக்கும் அபிஷேகம் நடைபெறும். இவருக்கு எண்ணெய், பால், தயிர், சந்தனம், இளநீர் ஆகியவையால் அபிஷேகமும் பின் அருகம் புல், பூ சாற்றிய பின் வில்வத்தால் அர்ச்சனை செய்வது வழக்கம். நந்தி தேவரது தீபாராதனைக்குப் பின் மூலவரான லிங்கத்திற்கு நடக்கும்

நமக்குத் தெரிந்த கோவில்களில் சில விஷயங்கள் நமக்கு தெரியாமல் உள்ளன. அவை:
1. சோட்டானிக்கரை பகவதி அம்மன் ஒரு நாளுக்கு மூன்று வித ஆடைகள் அணிந்து மூன்று வடிவங்களில் காட்சி தருகிறாள். காலையில் வெண்ணிற ஆடையுடன் சரஸ்வதி தேவியாக, உச்சி வேளையில் செந்நிற ஆடையுடன் லட்சுமி தேவியாக, மாலையில்


நீல நிற ஆடையில் துர்க்கா தேவியாக காட்சி தருகிறாள். இந்த மூவகை தரிசனத்தைக் காண்பவர்கள் நினைத்தது நிறைவேறும்.

2. மதுரை மீனாட்சியம்மன் கோயிலின் கீழ் கோபுரத்தின் நடுவிலிருந்து மேல் கோபுரத்தை நோக்கி ஒரு கோடு போட்டால், அது சிவலிங்கப் பெருமான் வழியாகச் செல்லும். அது போல் வடக்கு -


தெற்கு கோபுரங்களுக்கிடையே கோடிட்டுப் பார்த்தால், அது சுந்தரேசர் சன்னதியை இரண்டாகப் பகிர்ந்து செல்லும். இந்த அமைப்பு அக்கால சிற்பிகளின் அபரிமிதமான திறனை வெளிப்படுத்துகிறது.

3. திருவண்ணாமலையிலிருந்து 16 கிலோமீட்டர் தூரத்தில் உள்ளது தேவிகாபுரம். இங்குள்ள பொன்மலைநாதர் கோயிலில் அருள்


பாலிக்கும் கனககிரீஸ்வரருக்கு தினமும் வெந்நீரில் அபிஷேகம் செய்கிறார்கள். காலையில் இரண்டு மணி நேரம் மட்டுமே பூஜை செய்வார்கள். சிவராத்திரியன்று விசேஷ பூஜைகள் உண்டு.

4. 108 திவ்யதேசங்களில் முதன்மை ஆலயமான ஸ்ரீரங்கத்தில் பள்ளி கொண்டுள்ள ஸ்ரீரங்கநாதப் பெருமாளுக்கு அமாவாசை, ஏகாதசி,


மாதப்பிறப்பு ஆகிய நாட்களில் வெந்நீரால் அபிஷேகம் செய்வார்கள். வேறு எந்த திவ்ய தேசத்திலும் இதுபோல் செய்வதில்லை.

5. கும்பகோணம் நல்லம் தலத்திலுள்ள ஆலயத்தில் நடராசர் சுயம்பு வடிவில் காட்சி தருகிறார். இவர் கையில் ரேகையும், காலில் பச்சை நரம்பும் நன்கு தெரியும். இவரை சற்று தொலைவில்

“We say that Ambal is the embodiment of kindness and compassion. At the end of Lalitha Sahasranamam she is described as “Avyaaja karunaamoorthi” – one who showers kindness and compassion without any reason. However there are countless difficulties and hardships in


the world. Only I know that. People who come to me talk of the various difficulties faced by them in the world. Even people who do poojas, undertake pilgrimage, take bath in holy waters are afflicted with problems. During such times, many of them cry their heart out to me and

feel depressed saying, “In spite of all the poojas and my devotion, Ambal has only been giving me difficulties and hardships! You call her as the embodiment of compassion, but in my case she is blind”. They even get angry with Ambal. However, if you ask me, difficulties and

hardships are given because of her compassion; sometimes I feel this is the highest form of her compassion. We look at our good deeds of the present and argue if it is justified for us to be faced with so many difficulties. We curse the gods. But have we all done only good things

regardless of who we are? If we self introspect deeply we will know the number of sins (Paapam) that we have committed; if not physically the great sins we have committed by way of thoughts will be obvious. These are of the present – that is, of this life. We don’t know what we

NARHARI AND BHAGWAN PANDURANG/VITTHAL

Once a goldsmith by the name of Narhari lived in Pandharpur. He excelled in his craft. He had vowed not to look at Pandurang or visit his mandir ever, as he was a Shiva Bhakt.
One day, a wealthy merchant visited him.


He wanted a gold girdle studded with precious gems, to be made for Prabhu Vitthal. Narhari refused to make it as it was for Vitthal.
After many requests, he agreed to make the girdle but asked the merchant to bring the measurement from the mandir as he himself would not go there


The measurement was given n he made the girdle. When the girdle was put on Vitthal, it was loose. Narhari had to shorten it. Now the girdle became tight. So Narhari was forced to take measurement on his own. He had to go to the mandir but went blindfolded to avoid seeing Vitthal


In the Mandir, when blindfolded Narhari touched Vitthal, he felt as if he was touching Shiva with matted hair, the moon, snake in His neck and Trishul in His hand. Ecstatic with joy, he removed the blindfold to see Shiva but he found the murti of Vitthal with Rukmini there.


He realised the truth that there was no difference between Vitthal and Shiva. Narhari at once fell at the feet of Panduranga. He then took the measurement of the waist of Vitthal and this time the ornament fit the Murti perfectly.

Why use pyramiding?

1. It makes your winners bigger than your losers.

• Because you are adding positions when your trades are going your way, you are increasing your gains but your losers will be small comparatively.

2. You lose less during Draw-down time ( it saves you from losing big during whipsaws )

• Many times when the market is in sideways mode, Entering a trade with full risk might not be the best idea.

• So, you test the waters with a small position first, it could be ⅓ or ¼ of your total risk.

• So if the Breakout fails or whipsaws come, then you will only lose a small part of your overall risk.

• Then when position starts to go in your favor you can add to it.

3. It helps you to concentrate on a few trades,

They say that don’t put all your eggs in one basket, but don’t put them in too many either.

• See, Everyone can see charts and find breakouts, pullbacks etc.

Glorious Vedic Architecture and Temple

Architecture in India was an extremely rich form of expression and highly developed science, with a deep heritage of spirituality in it. #FreeHinduTemple


The centre of all architectural development was the temple and temple or Mandir was the earthly home of God, and like the launching pad for the devotee’s consciousness to soar toward the Divine and the spiritual world.


The murti or deity of the Divine would be placed in the temple sanctum, around which all temple activity would revolve.

Such buildings were often elaborately decorated with stone, wood, plaster, etc. and carved or cut to depict the stories from the Puranas or other sacred texts


Temples were always the centre of religious, social and educational activities, practically more so in
ancient times than today.

During a span of more than two thousand years, various dynasties were known for constructing glorious temples,


some of which include the Mauryan, Ashoka, Gupta, Satavahana, Chedi, Chandella, Chalukya, Solanki, Pallava, Shola, Hoysala, Vijayanagar, and others.

Many of these temples remain beautiful architectural wonders today.
