Why talking to your people is the most important thing you can do!

For a new acquisition, there's a general template I follow for the 1st 100 days.

The Number One point on that list is PEOPLE

I have failed this once, and succeeded once, let me share why this is most important.

 1. You are in spreadsheet mode

When working on a new acquisition you are in the numbers and in the models.

Net working capital true-up
First 6 mo cash flow
Valuation multiple
Realizable EBITDA
etc

Many new acquirers don't come out of this, and lose customers, employees, and $$
2. Verifying the Model

Post acquisition, you are verifying the model in realtime, adjusting, making sure you are good with the bank, investors, yourself.

You are checking actual expenses to see if they match.

Perhaps you are implementing a few easy cost cuts.

People!
3. Your people hold the answers.

Often the people that have been there, can will be happy to give you the scoop on

1. customers
2. service improvement ideas
3. Plant issues
4. under / over staffing
5. needs & investments

They have been there, and usually not been able to share
4. Small Window

There is a small window of time where they are:

1. looking to see if they will now have input
2. willing to speak up more boldly than normal
3. Evaluating how they feel about you
4. Earning (or losing) respect for you as an owner

You cannot miss this window!
5. Find improvements

By taking time with each employee (yes, this is time consuming, and the bet time investment you'll make in the first 6 months), you will

1. earn trust
2. earn respect
3. get ideas
4. be able to make quicker and easier change than any time in the future
6. Be One Of Them

This is also the time to show you are one of them.

I'll share mine...
In an acquisition I was part of, I was told there was a small division of 3 guys in southern Texas, and the guy was "a real cowboy", difficult to deal with, always complaining.

I hopped on a plane and flew out to meet him!
I showed up in dress pants, white button-down, and brown dress shoes.

Jim was in jeans and boots, and didn't like me from the second I got there.

Immediately started berating me for being from NY, made a number of assumptions on my politics, my religious beliefs, and the like.
Non of this bothered me, I had a family member like this, I knew the type well.

hard on the outside, soft on the inside.

If you make it through, you are in for life.

Now I had spent the last 8 years growing warehouses in Mex and NY, I spent long hours shipping
I was not a stranger to hard work in grueling temps, but to Jim, I was a white-shirted stiff who just acquired his company.

As we spoke, the pallet of screws dropped off the forklift, boxes got crushed, parts went everywhere!
Without thinking I jumped over and started cleaning up the mess, picking up boxes, resetting the pallet, and bringing the warehouse back to order.

I think I caught them off guard...

Jim has been my ally since that day.
Here are the things Jim has helped with:

1. Told me about 5 customer opportunities that he was holding because he wasn't being paid attention to
2. Warned me of 3 unhappy customers I was able to save
3. Gave me insight into some of the shipping issues they have
Whenever there is a problem, all I have to do is call Jim and I get the on-the-ground, no BS scoop and can fix it asap because of it.

He's still a cowboy, but now we have respect for each other.

Better decisions are made more often, and I get alerted asap when there are problem
7. Allocate Resource

As you talk to the team and interact with them, you will find that people, skills, and resources are not allocated correctly.

Many small businesses just leave people where they are, and as the company grows, who does what and why doesn't make sense.
Getting to know people, allows you to see what they are, and are not good at, where they might be happier and better serve the business goals.

Talking to your people, and jumping in is crucial!
8. You must have time!

I have heard new owners say "I don't have time", or
"I can't possibly talk to everyone"

You cant possibly not. You've got one shot at this, a small window, learn everything you can!
I call this the Gemba+.

Walking the floor isn't enough, get involved.

You need to learn, understand, give back, and be part of the operations - not just measuring them on a spreadsheet.

Naval: In India there's this concept of the extended family where you basically live with your tribe at all times, so when we were young, at our grandmother's place with my aunts, my uncles, my cousins, my grandparents,

everyone was there, and it was a warm night so we went out to the backyard and put all these comforters and these little cots out and everyone would sleep in this giant pile with fifteen people underneath the stars...

it was amazing...so there's two things that were great about it: the noise level didn't bother you, if someone's foot was in your face it didn't bother you. When it's family and you're young it all just works and you feel very safe and very happy.

Another thing is that it reinforces how important the tribe is. Modern society gives us incredible flexibility in that we can get away from our crazy family members, we're not destined to die where we are born or to do what our parents did. So we have incredible freedom.

But coming with it is this tremendous loneliness that we try to cover up either through drugs, alcohol, partying, even trying to find a mission like putting people on mars. But the reality is that a lot of that loneliness comes from being disconnected from growing up in your

In the space of half a year, a new class division was ripped through American society: those who can live normally through pandemic lockdowns and restrictions versus those who can't. The two sides have a great deal of difficulty communicating across that chasm.

Of course, media and political elites are, at worst, inconvenienced by lockdowns, so news coverage is heavily slanted against the people who are really suffering from these policies. They're already as forgotten as the designated losers of globalist trade policy.

Spend a day watching mainstream media pandemic coverage, then spend the evening with people whose livelihoods have been utterly ruined by pandemic restrictions. It's like traveling from the Earth to Mars. Completely different worlds, totally different outlooks.

It's exactly like the divide between "free trade" winners and losers, people living in comfortable financial and media bubbles vs. people living in hollowed-out ghost towns with skyrocketing mortality rates. The Wuhan virus gave us a new, even bigger class of Designated Losers.

The new class divide cracked open along some economic and social fault lines that were already present and deepening, such as the growing number of people who preferred minimizing human contact while socializing online. It really is the social schism of the new century.

@epballou @AutSciPerson I have to say, all this info about sound sensitivity is making me emotional. I've never been able to talk about this. I can work around airplanes, no protection (did it for years), but if I'm caught near a city fireworks show I lose my mind. The fear and pain is indescribable.

I tell people one of my biggest fears is balloons, and obviously it's funny to imagine, until they see me have a psychotic break when one pops. I lose myself and it's terrifying. I don't know what it is about loud sudden sounds that hurts me, and it appears I'll never know.

I dread the 4th of July every year. My birthday parties were often held then. Recently I discovered if I wear earbuds and blast music with audio PPE on top I can stand to be outside. That first show where I could keep my hands free I held my best friend's hand and felt wondrous.

I'm crying just remembering discovering I could be happy underneath fireworks. I'll never understand why my parents didn't think to ever try to help me, and instead made me suffer for so long, feeling absolutely alone with this. Only once do I remember my mother comforting me.

It was a particularly bad year, a lot of college kids I think renting nearby camps, and I hid under my bed for hours. My mother came up and laid on my bed, dangled her hand down to show she was there, and sang to me. I was 15.

Gemma and her husband Craig Edwards had already chosen a name for their unborn child, they named her "SKYE"and she was truly a miracle from the sky...

She was already booked to deliver her baby Skye via Ceasarian Section because she had an extra bone in her pelvis making her birth canal questionable

It was 4days before her due date but she just felt the urge to go to the hospital and she went...she was rushed in for surgery...

Baby "Skye" was delivered and she just cried a little and stopped and that's when the doctors knew all was not well...

Baby Skye had rashes and bruises all over her body, she also had severe heart, blood and lung problems...

Her internal orgrans were practically shutting down!


Doctors told the Mr & Mrs Edwards that if she had spent another 3hours at home, Baby Skye would have died in her womb that her coming in early gives her a chance at survival...

Doctors worked hard to save Baby Skye but no one could figure out what was wrong, after a few hours...

All hope was lost for Baby Skye and the doctors called the hospital chaplain to say prayers, Craig and Gemma were told to take pictures before it was too late

Family members flocked to the hospital to say "Goodbye" to the little girl that had just arrived..BUT GOD WAS NOT DONE!

A thread on how absurd the UK is on transgender issues and how the UK got so transphobic

In 2015 Parliament held an inquiry looking into the state of Transgender equality. Trans people of all stripes outlined many different problems across many, many different areas.

As a result Parliament created a list of recommendations including legal recognition for non binary people, gender recognition act reform, allowing 16 year olds to change their legal gender and reform of NHS gender identity services.

The government under Theresa May ignored everything that was recommended except for Gender recognition act reform. This act came into law in 2003 and gave trans men and women (but not non-binary people) the ability to legally change their gender on their birth certificates.

The process at that time to change your birth certificate under the GRA was to make an application to a panel of cisgender people who would decide if you were sufficiently trans based on your payslips, photo ID and bank statements. You would not get the option to speak to them.

(Also this process cost £140 which is just a tax on being trans)

I get asked for writing tips a lot. Of all the ones I’ve given, here are a few of the ones that seem to hold true and remain somewhat universal or at least mostly unobjectionable:

1. If you are a fast writer (i.e., if you compose first drafts very quickly) then you absolutely must become a slow editor. Much of what I call “writing” is really, for me, editing.

2. If you don’t read you cannot write a lot or well. Sure, maybe you can read like a maniac for a decade and then read less after that, but without some large volume of intake, there will never be a meaningful output.

2.1 I sometimes say that I feel like writing without reading is like trying to run a marathan on a cracker. And sadly I see many students struggling to write when they have simply never read enough to fuel that demand of the task at hand.

3. All writing is writing if one decides to treat it that way. If one takes some degree of intentional will when sending emails, posting on social media and writing notes and marginalia, then all of that can count as meaningful daily writing.

Mueller's officially end his investigation all on his own and he's gonna say he found no evidence of Trump campaign/Russian collusion during the 2016 election.

Democrats & DNC Media are going to LITERALLY have nothing coherent to say in response to that.

Mueller's team was 100% partisan.

That's why it's brilliant. NOBODY will be able to claim this team of partisan Democrats didn't go the EXTRA 20 MILES looking for ANY evidence they could find of Trump campaign/Russian collusion during the 2016 election

They looked high.

They looked low.

They looked underneath every rock, behind every tree, into every bush.

And they found...NOTHING.

Those saying Mueller will file obstruction charges against Trump: laughable.

What documents did Trump tell the Mueller team it couldn't have? What witnesses were withheld and never interviewed?

THERE WEREN'T ANY.

Mueller got full 100% cooperation as the record will show.
