#Eritrea has been a pariah state for its conflict with all its neighbors and went through more than a decade long sanction that have started in #IGAD #AU & by #UNSC for its role of destabilizing the region; direct involvement in arms and contraband trading; &supporting #Al-Shabab

.@AbiyAhmedAli, nominated and subsequently appointed as PM by the “late” ruling coalition EPRDF, on 2 April 2018; following the four years of street protests, that multiple report had been indicating the involvement of foreign forces, including #Eritrea.
Immediately Abiy initiated rapprochement with #Eritrea. To the surprise of everyone, despite Eritrea’s consistent position of handing over the disputed territories before initiating any normalization for almost 2 decades, agreed to the normalization without any pre-condition.
Abiy visited Eritrea and Esayas reciprocated with an official visit after 20 years; and the unholy matrimony was consummated with a Comprehensive peace and cooperation agreement neither ratified by the parliament nor known its content by anyone.
Unprecedented in the history of the #UNSC #Ethiopia replaced its PR to the UN DR. Tekeda with only 6 months left to its term, by @TayeAtske with the singular mission of lifting the sanction imposed on #Eritrea without any change of behavior from the side of the regime in #Asmara.
On the top of extremely secretive nature of the agreement, with many official visits, secret flights & meetings, the regime in Addis & Asmara have been jointly planning to revenge to the #Tigray people & #TPLF that both consider is an obstacle to their individual ambitions.
A Week before the declaration of #WarOnTigray Abiy regime, #PIA had an official visit in Addis & to the displeasure of sensible Ethiopians, allowed to visit highly classified military establishments not allowed to Ethiopians with low security clearance let alone sovereign leader
In an effort of finding a pretext to wage war on Tigray, Abiy regime attributed a claim of ethnic based attack in Welega without any investigation, to the TPLF; and further, the attack on the Northern Command to collaborate his pretext
#WarOnTigray is a result of joint preparation of almost 3 years. The international community should rectify the grave mistake the #UNSC has made in lifting the sanction on #Eritrea without precondition in the absence of any change of behavior by the regime. #EritreaOutOfTigray

Every single public defender. Every single day.

Bail arguments, motions, oral arguments, hearings. Judges don’t know, follow, or care about the law. Prosecutors are willing to take advantage of it. And mandatory minimums, withheld evidence, & pretrial detention coerces people to plead before trial. When theres a jury. A shot.

But defenders still fight. And still win. Most times wins aren’t “Justice.” It’s power of repetition of argument in front of same judges. Introducing those in power to the people they oppress. Not just a RAP sheet or words on a page. Defenders make it harder to be brutal & cruel.

I worked as a public defender at an office as well resourced as any in the country. Social workers, team of investigators, a reentry team, support staff, specialist attorneys in immigration, housing, education, family. Relatively low caseloads (80-100). And yet still injustice.

Most think that balancing the scales of justice means more funding for defenders. Thats part of it. Enough a attorneys to actually be at bail hearings. Wrap around services to be able to help people trapped in the system end up better off in their communities. Lower caseloads.

He has been wrong (or lying) so often that it will be nearly impossible for me to track every grift, lie, deceit, manipulation he has pulled. I will use...

1/“What would need to be true for you to….X”

Why is this the most powerful question you can ask when attempting to reach an agreement with another human being or organization?

A thread, co-written by @deanmbrody:

2/ First, “X” could be lots of things. Examples: What would need to be true for you to

- “Feel it's in our best interest for me to be CMO"
- “Feel that we’re in a good place as a company”
- “Feel that we’re on the same page”
- “Feel that we both got what we wanted from this deal

3/ Normally, we aren’t that direct. Example from startup/VC land:

Founders leave VC meetings thinking that every VC will invest, but they rarely do.

Worse over, the founders don’t know what they need to do in order to be fundable.

4/ So why should you ask the magic Q?

To get clarity.

You want to know where you stand, and what it takes to get what you want in a way that also gets them what they want.

It also holds them (mentally) accountable once the thing they need becomes true.

5/ Staying in the context of soliciting investors, the question is “what would need to be true for you to want to invest (or partner with us on this journey, etc)?”

Multiple responses to this question are likely to deliver a positive result.
