How to write emails like a boss (according to an award-winning author):

 Kabir Sehgal is a bestselling author, US Navy Veteran, Fortune 500 leader, and Grammy Award winning producer.

It’s fair to say he knows a thing or two about effective communication.

Here’s his advice for writing emails with military precision that people respect you for:
1. Subject Line

Everyone knows that the subject line makes or breaks the success of an email.

It applies to cold emails sent in bulk or military generals giving orders to troops on the ground.

By using keywords in their subject lines, the military excels:
SIGN – Requires a signature

DECISION – Requires a decision

COORD – Coordination by or with the recipient

REQUEST – Asks for permission or approval

ACTION – A requirement for the recipient to take some action

INFO – For information only, and no response or action required
Consider using these keywords in all caps in your next email.

Consider writing the following as the subject of your weekly report to your boss:

INFO - Weekly Report

Your email will stand out in their inbox, and the message will be clearly understood.
2. Brevity

The military knows that shorter emails are better.

A message should use as few words as possible while conveying the message accurately.

They do this by trying to fit every email into one pane.

This prevents the recipient from scrolling.
Furthermore, they write everything in an active voice rather than a passive one.

The Air Force manual says, “Besides lengthening and twisting sentences, passive verbs often muddy them.”

Passive:

The tank was shot by an A-10.

Active:

The A-10 shot the tank.
To change the passive to active voice, follow these steps:

1. Determine who is acting in the sentence.

2. Restructure the sentence so that the performer is the focus, clearly performing the verb upon the sentence's direct object.

This will make your email clear and economical.
3. BLUF

In the military, the bottom line is written right at the beginning of an email.

This is known as Bottom Line Up Front (BLUF).

This gives your readers a preview of the Reader's Digest version of your email before they open it.
A BLUF distills vital information into one or two sentences, so there's no confusion about what's being said or requested.

Example:

BLUF: "I need you to approve the content of the attached mission plan by noon on August 10."
For your purposes, people won't understand BLUF, and it's not worth explaining it.

Unless you're responsible for the company's email etiquette, you won't change how people communicate.

But you can start your emails with a "Bottom Line" summary to improve your communication.
TL;DR —

Write in an active voice.

Use subject line keywords.

State your bottom line up front.

Your emails will be easier to read, understand, and respond to if you follow these steps.

Apply it today, and you'll reap the benefits of consistently clear communication.

First things first: The best way to win an argument is to not enter one in the first place.

However, we don't always have that luxury and can sometimes find ourselves needing to defend a point of view.

Anecdotal (vs. Empirical Evidence)

Using a personal experience or an isolated example to try and prove a point instead of empirical or more compelling evidence.

Humans tend to believe and relate to stories, but don't fall into this trap.

Likely or Plausible Fallacy

Likely: Incorrectly assuming that just because something is possible means that it is likely.

Plausible: Incorrectly assuming that just because something is plausible means that it is true.

Begging The Question

Involves presenting a circular argument where the conclusion is included in the premise.

Examples:

1/ "Of course smoking causes cancer. The smoke from cigarettes is a carcinogen."

2/ "Circular reasoning is bad mostly because it's not very good."

First, some general principles that underlie the techniques and aid memory:

1) We don't remember all types of information equally (visual and spatial are best)

2) Attach new memories to old memories

3) Make information vivid and exciting

4) Engage as many senses as possible

Memory Palace

1) Prepare an organised location (E.g. your house layout)

2) Create markers in this location in an easy to follow order

3) Make a clear image of the information you would like to remember

4) Place each item you are trying to remember on the marked locations


The Textbook Method

Write your own textbook chapter on a topic.

It requires a deep understanding of the concepts and how they fit together.

You're forced to be consise and to create a clear mental structure of the topic.

There's no hiding behind knowledge gaps.

The Question-Book Method

Rephrase notes as questions to be answered later—this engages the retrieval muscle.

When reading a book, restate the big idea of a chapter or section as a question.

This requires deeper thinking and not just adding a "?" to notes you copied verbatim.

She conducted the administrative work skillfully. As a Maharani she was an impartial judge. Rani Bhavani had a very hard time during the fag end of her life. The Zamindari (estate) incurred serious loss due to the change of the revenue policy of the company.

In spite of being the owner of a large Zamindari (estate), she had to depend on the stipend of the government in the later part of her life. The amount of this stipend gradually decreased and became Rs. 1000/- only in the end.

ANCIENT BHARAT WAS CALLED VISHWAGURU, AND IT REALLY DESERVED IT.

India had a well developed education system centuries before the westerners arrived and called us uncivilized. Education was always given a great importance in Indian civilisation since times immemorial.


Ancient India had the Gurukulas and Ashramas as the epicentres of the knowledge and enlightenment. Bigger Gurukulas served as the centres of higher education called universities. Besides these universities, temples also emerged as the major learning centres.

Studying the Holy Scriptures, character building, personality development, responsibilities towards self,family and society,discipline and preservation of the ancient culture and heritage were the key embodiments of education.

This kind of education system made ancient India, a centre of knowledge all over the world. Many foreign students came to India for education and India was called the 'Vishwaguru'.
Takshshila and Nalanda were the two prominent universities of ancient India.


But were these only Universities of ancient India?The answer is 'No'.Let's learn about these gems of our education system that flourished across ancient India & be proud.

Mahabharat - the great war - 18 days of heroism, deceit, blood and intrigue - now as a mega Twitter thread.

I'll add the events from a few days of the war each day.

Caveats: lots of editorialization, creative liberties and interpretations.

There will also be a lot of asides - especially around war strategy and tactics, the characters and their motivations and non-canon storylines.

Over the years, I've read multiple versions, phenomenal translations and modern retellings. So be prepared for a potpourri.

There are different ways of looking at this war. Was it a family feud? Sure - but whose family? Shantanu's or Satyavati's? Was Vyas essentially telling us his family history? And then Kunti added a twist to this tale. Here's a helpful chart:


Satyavati's two sons from Shantanu both died without children. Vyas - her first son - fathered Dhritarashtra and Pandu (and Vidur).

Pandu never fathered any children. Kunti and Madari gave birth to six demi-gods (Karna and the five Pandavs).

So Satyavati Vs Kunti and Madari.

Or was this a fight between two massive neighbouring kingdoms - the Kurus and the Panchals? While many smaller kingdoms joined the battle, most of the Pandav army (more than half of their 7 divisions) came from the Panchals. King Drupad and his son Shikhandi led two divisions.

THREAD: Meditations on marriage metaphors in Ruth

The book of Ruth is, of course, a story about a beautiful marriage. But even before the courtship and the wedding and the important genealogy at the end, we find interesting language that is strikingly reminiscent of Genesis 2:24


That important verse reads:

'Therefore a man shall leave [יַֽעֲזָב] his father and his mother and hold fast [וְדָבַ֣ק] to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.'

The verb עזב can be quite strong in force. For example, Joseph leaves behind [וַיַּעֲזֹ֤ב] his garment as he flees from Pharaoh's wife's sexual advances. Countless times, Israel is depicted abandoning the LORD, for example in Judg 2:12 [וַיַּעַזְב֞וּ], and going after other gods.

Likewise, the verb דבק is rather striking. Lot is mortified of disaster overtaking him [תִּדְבָּקַ֥נִי] as he flees from Sodom. Israel is commanded in Deut 10:20 to cling fast [תִדְבָּ֔ק] to the LORD and serve him and swear by his name.

Together they illustrate how radical God designed marriage to be. Marriage is a real severing of family relations in order to form a new, permanent bond with another human being.

Something very similar to this takes places in Ruth's life.

Fake chats claiming to be from the Irish African community are being disseminated by the far right in order to suggest that violence is imminent from #BLM supporters. This is straight out of the QAnon and Proud Boys playbook. Spread the word. Protest safely. #georgenkencho


There is co-ordination across the far right in Ireland now to stir both left and right in the hopes of creating a race war. Think critically! Fascists see the tragic killing of #georgenkencho, the grief of his community and pending investigation as a flashpoint for action.


Across Telegram, Twitter and Facebook disinformation is being peddled on the back of these tragic events. From false photographs to the tactics ofwhite supremacy, the far right is clumsily trying to drive hate against minority groups and figureheads.


Declan Ganley’s Burkean group and the incel wing of National Party (Gearóid Murphy, Mick O’Keeffe & Co.) as well as all the usuals are concerted in their efforts to demonstrate their white supremacist cred. The quiet parts are today being said out loud.


The best thing you can do is challenge disinformation and report posts where engagement isn’t appropriate. Many of these are blatantly racist posts designed to drive recruitment to NP and other Nationalist groups. By all means protest but stay safe.
