following a discussion at @yak_collective this morning, I came up with this chart to capture a hypothesis I have that the difficulty of creating communities scales exponentially with the the "depth" of what you're trying to do

thanks @grigorimilov for leading the discussion that sparked this.

The way to read the graph is: each line is a time history of difficulty. It starts dotted, goes through a criticality inflection point, and then crests in difficulty before coming down to a stable plateau.

The inflection points have different names depending on context, but are all topologically similar. They are the make or break moment when a network-effect either kicks in, or fails to. "Product-market fit" in the case of market is the best known such point.

Level 1 is a basic social community, such as a FB group, meetup etc. There are millions of successful ones, and 100s of millions of failures. The "fit point" is what I call a meme-mind fit, when some social object catalyzes a sustainable long-term conversation of growing richness

Almost everything I've helped instigate is Level 1. My contributions to the social-object soup have been things like the vocabulary around sociopaths/clueless/losers, legibility, 2x2s etc.

Thinking about the foolishness of God’s love vs the wisdom of humans.

In John’s gospel, Jesus commands that followers would “love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends.” (John 15:12-13)

For Jesus-centric Christians (Christians that view the Bible through the lens of Jesus and actively follow Him, claiming that in Christ and with the help of the Holy Spirit, we are able to live like Jesus), what does this verse about wisdom mean for us?

What is human wisdom?

In the Bible we find many books including Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon.

Other human wisdom include mainstream “-isms.”

Laws and governments are built around human wisdom. We train up our children and societies’ criminals and occasionally our neighbors based on discipline by human wisdom.

The investigatory/legal fallout from 1/6 seems by all accounts to be shaping up to be pretty massive, which is not entirely shocking given that fash just humiliated cops and feds at the heart of the nation's Capitol.

None of that will make this go away.

What happened in DC was a revolution for the right.

They claimed their power and, at least for a few hours, they got away with it.

They really smell themselves now, as a pastor friend of mine likes to put it.

In liberatory organizing, we talk all the time about what it means to give up power because we don't think we have it, and how tidal the shift is when folks awaken to what happens when they act in mass movement together.

That's how people start to believe a win is possible.

Well, that's what the far right got a taste of in DC.

That realization of, oh, mass organizing oriented towards action can move mountains.

They understand that the absence of a militarized cop presence was a product of their political will.

When they start seeing large-scale legal consequences, they will react the way they always do when their infrastructure is under attack, which is to be like "this only makes us stronger and radicalizes more people!"

It's not true, but it's also worth unpacking a bit.

I think the reason people are fixated on the $2000 checks is because that's immediate in a way the other stuff in the bill isn't.

Minimum wage increase is great! But I expect employers and states to fight it tooth and nail. Utility assistance sounds great! But we all know the horror stories about how impossible it is to qualify for relief programs.

Most of us have seen direct checks from the IRS come in immediately and be used for stuff the next day. That's fast relief, which is what we need.

If you're working 40 hours at, say, $11 right now, the $15 minimum wage increase won't even show up for a week and when it does that's $160 more per week ($15*40 - $11*40).

That's not nothing! But it's not a RIGHT NOW check for $2000.

Folks need $2000 right now, hell, they need $20,000 right now--10 months of back pay. Maybe that's impossible, but it's not helpful to act like the people who need it don't care about the rest of the bill.

2. No politics.

At all. Ever. It’s a great way to piss off (and say goodbye) to 1/2 the folks here.

Not everybody feels the way you do and the smartest folks don’t want your opinion. Nothing good comes of it. So avoid it.

3. Be incredibly open

Nobody will steal your ideas. Yes it’s uncomfortable and yes you’ll get challenged.

I don't know why twitter is refusing to insert a card for this one. In any case, It's the @LockPickingLwyr, and it's a floppy-drive-lock.

so I've been meaning to do a video or thread on these sorts of locks myself. I have several, of different designs.

generally they're all designed vaguely like this one: it's a plastic insert that goes into the floppy drive, then it has some bit that rotates with the key to hold itself inside.

and they pretty much universally use super-cheap low-security tubular locks like this. You can probably pick most of them with a ballpoint pen
