This Day in Labor History: January 17, 1915. The radical Lucy Parsons led an unemployed march of 10,000 workers in Chicago. This surprised more reformist leaders, who then worked for a sizable work program for the city's unemployed. Let's talk about it!

Chicago workers were having a hard time of it in the winter of 1915. While the 1913 recession doesn’t get the same publicity as the Great Depression or Panic of 1893, it still caused serious hardship to workers in an era when employment was often tenuous.

When periods of low employment took place, especially in the West and Midwest, where you had large amounts of seasonal and itinerant labor in farming (and logging in the Northwest), huge masses of unemployed people flooded into the cities.

The winter of 1915 was also extremely cold, exacerbating the unemployment crisis in Chicago. With all of this combined, you had thousands of homeless people, including increasing numbers of women and children. A crisis was at hand.

Lucy Parsons was a fascinating if problematic individual. She was born a slave, probably in 1853. Parsons later claimed to be entirely Mexican and Native American heritage and not African-American.

social media use really calls for something closer to a driver's license than terms of service... most apparent bad behavior here is more incompetence than malice, like not knowing how to change lanes or take turns at a 4-way stop..

trump's history on twitter is something closer to a crazy car chase on LA streets than bad driving (with the cops MIA, but media helicopters in pursuit), but almost all unpleasantness around here is just poor driving skills

not that I'm advocating for a licensing regime... that would be a terrible thing. Do not need a social media DMV. But the underlying principles (as tested for eg. in the written and road tests) are pretty good.

Written test would test things like "safe following distance" (reply-guying = tailgating?)

Road test would actually expose you to routine provocations. Like, "make a left turn" = "deal with this concern troll"

As in the driving test, where an awkward, unnatural, and unintuitive bit, the parallel parking test, is the toughest bit, there would be some such awkward maneuver you'd have to learn (hmmm... what's the parallel parking equivalent on twitter?)

I decided to figure out how much time our jobs actually require. I estimated per year (m=month, w=week, d=day, h=hour):
Teaching: 20h/w x 20w = 400h
Meetings of all sorts: 10h/w x 48w= 480h
Replying to email: 2h/d x 365d = 730h
Attending and giving talks: 2h/w x 50w = 100h

Papers: If each person needs 2 papers during a 5y stint, and you run a 7.5-person lab, then you need 7.5 papers per 2.5y = 3 papers/y. Throw in a review and it’s 4 papers. If you need 15d at 8h/d per paper, that’s 480h writing papers.

What is Polkadot?

@Polkadot is a platform on which blockchain networks are built and connected into one unified network. These connected chains, called parachains, form a living organism of networks all in sync and secure. This forms the foundation on which Web3 will be built.

Dr. Gavin Wood, @gavofyork, founded @Polkadot after inventing the Ethereum Virtual Machine and the Solidity programming language for #Ethereum as the co-founder and CTO. Ethereum wasn't going to scale, and thus, Polkadot was born in 2017.

Blockchains built for Polkadot use a dev framework called Substrate (@substrate_io), the easiest and most advanced blockchain-building framework for coders.

Think of it as drag-and-drop blockchain consensus, or even easier, like Music EQ with dials up & down on certain features.

Ethereum is a one-size-fits-all chain. This doesn't work at scale.

Dev teams use @Polkadot's Substrate framework to build custom chains for a specific use/vertical, such as @AcalaNetwork for DeFi, @PhalaNetwork for Privacy, @chainlink for Oracles, or @hydra_dx for liquidity.

It was a red week across board. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (commonly known as the Dow) fell by 0.91%.

The S&P 500 index fell by 1.48% and the NASDAQ composite index dipped by 1.54%.

Last week marked the commencement of the earnings season, with a number of banks releasing their earnings.

JP Morgan released its Q4 2020 numbers. It made $31.6 billion in revenue and an earnings per share of $3.79

Citigroup made $16.5 billion in revenue, and an earnings per share of $2.08.

Wells Fargo made$17.9 billion in revenue and an earnings per share of $0.64

I started learning Clojure in 2021 and there are a lot of things that I like about this language/ecosystem. I will try to summarize my experience in this thread.

If you're not familiar with Clojure, here is how the code looks like. Clojure is a Lisp-derivative which is different than most Fortran/C-derivative languages that we use today.

At first, the syntax was very off-putting (my god these parentheses!!), but then you start appreciating the elegance of the language and after sometime you stop being bothered by the syntax.

One of the things that Clojurists (I guess that's what they call themselves 😅) always talk about is how they think of everything as data even the language's syntax! Every Clojure expression is just a plain ol' Clojure list that the complier reads and executes.

And for that reason macros in Clojure are first class citizens (in fact a lot of Clojure built-in functionality is built with macros). Macros are functions that take your code as input (remember your code is just a list data structure) and it transforms your code into...

Things I've learned trading for the past 4 years in no particular order while reflecting this Sunday on it all:

* It always goes higher than you expect it will.

* It always comes back down.

* It is very easy to make money in these markets. It is much harder to keep it.

* You will FOMO no matter how much you say you won't. Make sure you don't FOMO with everything and blow your account.

* You don't need some fancy indicator to be profitable. Get solid with a few (personally for me, Ichimoku and OBV are my favorites)

* Horizontal levels are more reliable than diagonal.

* Trade with friends. They'll tell you when you've fucked up and shame you for it.

* You can follow someone else's TA, but you better be able to tell if they're full of shit or not.

* Risk Management will ultimately lead to your success over time. Luck runs out.

* "As soon as you stop trying to get rich quick, you'll get rich quick."

* Beware of getting sucked into coin communities. They're full of hopium, bag hodlers, and outrageous price predictions. Echo chambers are dangerous.

* Always leave behind a small moon bag. Makes you feel better when it does another 10x.

I ran across a quote a long time ago, and it's stuck with me:

I like this quote from Munger:

"I think I’ve been in the top 5% of my age cohort all my life in understanding the power of incentives, and all my life I’ve underestimated it. And never a year passes, but I get some surprise that pushes my limit a little farther."

So now, like a mad monkey who has just discovered the hammer, I will now go around using this tool of incentives and perverse incentives on everything. Maybe I'll get lucky and hit a few actual nails.

At root, I think the riots at the capitol are the result of a synergy of perverse incentives in politics, mass media, and social media, and they all contribute to a perfect storm of dysfunction. Maybe this is obvious to everyone, and I'm just catching up. But whatever. Here goes.

There's so much competitiveness during the application process and beyond; how do you handle it?

The unfortunate truth about academia (in its current state) is that it's relentlessly competitive. Motivational quotes abound on not comparing yourself to others, but that's MUCH more easily said than done, especially when other people sometimes do the comparing for you.

So how can you survive the rest of the application process (and hopefully beyond) as gracefully as possible?

Firstly, I want to address "online forums." I won't name any because if you already know them, then you know what I'm talking about, and if you don't know any of them,...

I would personally recommend to PLEASE stay off of any online forums for prospective grad students. From what I've seen, those forums tend to be less of a helpful discussion, and more of a place for people to show off the grades, exam scores, interviews, and acceptances...

they're most proud of. I consider myself quite lucky because I didn't know about any of them when I was applying, so I never had to consciously prevent myself from reading and engaging with them. For what it's worth, I was able to get all the help and information I needed...
