Am not sure how many of us are aware the vital role EQ plays in shaping us who we're. I read somewhere tht the EQ amongst humans have considerably gone down over yrs while imp is given to IQ.

A young man in his thirties used to stand on the footpath opposite the famous Tata Cancer Hospital at Mumbai and stare at the crowd in front- fear plainly written upon the faces of the patients standing at death’s door; their relatives with equally grim faces running around...

These sights disturbed him greatly..

Most of the patients were poor people from distant towns. They had no idea whom to meet, or what to do. They had no money for medicines, not even food. The young man, heavily depressed, would return home.

Periyanayagi Amman Temple

Periyanayagi Amman Temple is situated at Devikapuram village of Thiruvannamalai in Tamil Nadu. Temple is the second largest temple in Thiruvannamalai District after Arunachaleswarar Temple. Devi is worshipped here as

Periyanayagi or Brihannayaki. This is one of the 4 temples where Brahma did Prathista.

Sthala Puranam says that,  Devaki, came here and worshipped Amman. After worshiping here Devaki gave birth of Sri Krishna. Thus the area is called Devakipuram.

Paramashiva is Kanakagiriswarar here situated at the hill. Those who face obstacles in marriages worship Devi here. Temple has a big Rajagopuram and there are big Dwarapalakas on either side. There are many bee combs situated at the temple. It is believed that sages live here as

bees and birds to safeguard the Temple's treasures. There are 4 Theerthams in the Temple - The Brahma Theertham located inside the Temple and the Navagraha Theertham, Agni Theertham and the Devaradiyar Theertham.

DEVI KARUMARIAMMAN, THIRUVERKADU (TN)

Devi is worshipped here as both Swayambhu (self-manifested) and as Parashakti (with 4 arms holding skull,sword,trishul,udukkai/damru).

Here, Muruga got Vel from Devi to fight Suran. So the place was called Vel kadu which became Verkadu.

It is said that there was an anthill here long ago. Devi appeared in the dream of a devotee and asked him to build a shrine at that spot. When the anthill was removed, the swayambhu murti of Devi emerged. So Devi is called Karuvil Illadha Karumari ( not in the womb of mother).

Once, Devi went to Surya in the form of an old woman but Surya neglected her. Devi’s anger made Surya lose his brightness.
To appease her, Surya said that His rays would fall on Her directly twice in a year and touch her feet. Also, Sunday is celebrated as day of Devi Karumari.

There is also a wooden image of Devi (Marachilai Amman) here. Devotees offer locks to her in the belief that She would safe guard their houses.
Temple tank (Thiruchamber Poigai) is said to have been created by Subramanya. Taking dip in it is said to cure skin related disorders.

KADRI MANJUNATHESHWARA, MANGALURU (KAR)

Kadri Manjunatha is believed to be the oldest Shiva Shrine in Mangaluru.
It also has tanks with natural springs and laterite caves known as Pandava Caves.
The Kadri Hill has the biggest centre of Natha Pantha (cult) in South India.

After defeating and ending Kshatriyas, Parashurama donated all land to Kashyap. He, then, meditated upon Shiva.
Shiva told Parashurama that he would incarnate as Manjunath and asked him to meditate at Kadalivana (today’s Kadri).

Parashurama visited the new land and found a Kadalivana (plantain field) and one Rasakoopa (well). Shiva appeared in that Rasakoopa and later Vishwakarma created a shrine.
Ma Parvathi also settled here and Saptakoti Mantras settled here as Sapta Teerthas (7 ponds).

Much later, Kadri became a buddhist centre and after that the Natha pantha. The Jogis of Jogimutt still reside here and worship Manjunatha.
The place has a natural spring called Gomukha. It is said that water flows in it from Ganga in Kashi, hence called Kashi Bhagirathi Tirth.

Triprangode Shiva Temple is located at Tirur, which is one among the 108 Shiva Temples of Kerala. Paramashiva is Swayambhu here and is worshipped as Kalasamhara Murti means who destroyed Yama.

there lived a Rishi named Mrikandu and his wife Marudvati. Both were Devotees of Paramashiva. They were childless and decided to worship Paramashiva. Pleased by their devotion Paramshiva appeared before them and asked if they desired an ordinary son who would live a long life or

an exceptional son who would live until the age of 16. Couple chose the latter. Thus Markandeya was born. Markandeya learned Mrithyunjaya Mantra and at 16 years of age nearly became a sage.
As the boy was nearing age of 16, his parents became very sad, from them Markandeya knew

everything. He ran to Thinunavaya Navamukhunda Kshetram, but a voice came and told to seek shelter at Triprangode.

Markandeya reached Triprangode and embraced Shivalingam holding tightly and prayed to Paramshiva. Yamadeva came and threw his Kaalapasham to take Markandeya.

But the pasham surrounded Shivalingam too. Mahadeva appeared from the Shivalingam and was angered with Yama's deeds. Paramashiva took his trishul and destroyed
Yama, but later revived as requested by devas. Thus Markandeya was granted wish that he will be always 16 year old.

WHAT TYPE OF FLOWERS SHOULD BE USED AND NOT TO BE USED FOR DEV PUJA.

As per Agnidev, Shri Vishnu is fond of Dhoop, Deep and Naivedya. Then Agnidev describes as to offering of a particular flower yields what result.

In puja the preferred flower is of malti.

The flowers of Tamaal provide bhog and moksha. Malika flower destroys all your sins. Juhi flower takes you to Vishnu lok. Karvir flower takes you to Vaikunth. Mogra and lodhra also take you to Vaikunth lok. Japa pushp gives you punya. Pavanti, Kubjak and Tagar take you to Vishnu

lok. Kaner takes you to Vishnu lok. Kurunt or yellow kutsaraiya destroys your sins. Lotus, kuunt and Ketaki give you Paramgati. Baan pushp, Barbar pushp and Krishna tulsi leaves give you paramgati. Ashok, Tilak and Adusa flower provide you moksha.

Bilva and Shami leaves provide you param gati. Tamaal dal and Bhringraj flowers provide moksha.Krishna tulsi, Shukla tulsi, Kalhar Utpal and Padma give you moksha.

Shri Hari is more pleased with garland made of Neep, Arjun, Bakul, Palash, Muni, Gokarn, Nagkarn, Chameli,

Sandhya pushpi, Ketaki, Kushmand, Kus, Kaas etc.

It is always better to take flowers from your garden.Also never pick up fallen flowers for making offerings. Also never take crushed or stale flowers. Similarly flowers to be avoided are Shirish, Kutaj, Dhatur, kachnaar & Shalmali

SURYA NARAYAN SWAMY, ARSAVALLI, SRIKAKULAM (AP)

One of the oldest Surya kshetra in India.
It is a Panchayatana shrine (with Suryanarayana, Shiva-Parvati, Vishnu, Ganesh and Indra) Believed to have curative powers. It’s original name was Harshavalli (Abode of Joy)

Once, Indra went to meet Shiva. He tried to force his entry at a time when Mahadev was with Devi Parvati. Nandi who was standing as dwarapalaka, kicked Indra. This left Indra wounded and senseless.
Indra,then, had a dream that worshipping Surya would cure his wounds.

Indra found this murti of Surya at Arsavalli where he prayed and got relief. Here, Surya is with his consorts-Usha, Chaaya and Padmini. The base has Mathara and Pingala as dwarapalakas. At the top, Rishis Sanak and Sanandana are holding an umbrella.

The shrine is built such that the sun’s rays are focussed on the feet of the murti twice a year in March and September for a few minutes in the early hours of the day even when 5 entrance gates are closed.
The main festival celebrated here is Ratha Saptami.

Bhu Varaha Swamy Temple

Mahavishnu is worshipped as Bhu Varaha Swamy and Lakshmi Devi as Ambujavalli Thayar.  Mulavar is with Sri Devi and Bhu Devi in a standing position. Vigraham is made of Salagramam and Mahavishnu is Swayambhu here.

Sthala Puranam says that, Hiranyaksha took Earth with him. Bhoomi Devi prayed to Mahavishnu to rescue here. Mahavishnu appeared as a boar and rescued Devi. In between that battle with Hiranyaksha, his sweat falls here, creating the Kshetra Kulam.

SRI BANASHANKARI AMMAN, BANGALORE

Located in Southern Bangalore, this is one of the most popular places of worship in Bangalore City.
Devoted to Devi Banashankari, this shrine is visited specially during Rahukala which is believed to be an unfavorable time.

Somanna Shetty, a great devotee of Devi, brought this murti from Badami’s Banshankari Amma Kshetram.
It is said that many years ago, three ladies visited this shrine and requested the pujari to conduct puja for them. Since it was the inauspicious rahu kaal, the pujari refused.

However, upon their insistence, he conducted the puja. When he returned with prasadam, the ladies vanished. This made the people believe that they were none other than the Devi herself. Since then, the people perform poojas here during the Rahukaal.

People use lemons as a diya. Lemons are cut from the centre and their pulps are removed, for pouring oil in them.
It is strongly believed that Devi removes all the troubles from the life of her devotees during the Rahukala although it is considered inauspicious for any pooja.

Vijayaasana Perumal Kovil / Thiru Varagunamangai Perumal Temple is one among Nava Tirupati, and also one among 108 Divya Desham. Mahavishnu is worshipped as Sri Vijayasanar and Lakshmi Devi as Varaguna Mangai Thaayar.

Mahavishnu gives relief for Navagraha dosham in each of the Nava Tirupathi. This temple is Chandra  ( moon) parihara sthalam.
Sthala Puranam says that, in a vilage called Punya Gosham lived a Brahmin named Vedavi. He was a great Vishnu Bhakta. He wished Mahavishnu's darshan.

Mahavishnu went to him as an old Brahmin and told to chant a particular Manthram here at Varaguna Mangai Temple. Vedavi came to this area where temple is now located, and did tapasya here. Mahavishnu appeared and gave Moksham to Vedavi. Thus he attained Mukthi

It is believed that Mahavishnu gave darshanam to Savithri, who fought with Yama for her husband. Devotees visit this temple to perform Tarpanam for the departed souls. Vaikunta Ekadashi is very famous here.

According to Ayurveda, our entire universe comprises of five elements : Ether, Air, Fire, Water and Earth. Vata, pitta and kapha are combinations of these five elements that are present in all that exists. These are called doshas, the ayurvedic constitutions.

Just as everyone has a unique genes, each person has a unique combination of physical, mental and emotional characteristics—which comprises their own constitution. All people have the qualities of vata, pitta and kapha, but one is usually most dominant than others.

The cause of disease in Ayurveda is viewed as an imbalance of the doshas or by the presence of ama, anything undigested (food, feelings, thoughts). Auyrveda seeks to remove the harmful ama and restore the balance in our doshas.

Kapha is the energy that forms the body’s structure — bones, muscles, tendons — and provides the “glue” that holds the cells together. In balance, kapha is expressed as love, calmness and forgiveness. Out of balance, it leads to attachment, greed and envy and may manifest as

symptoms such as constipation, edema, tiredness, breathing difficulties and foggy mind. Vata is all about the movement. It governs breathing, blinking, muscle and tissue movement, and pulsation of the heart. In balance, vata is expressed as creativity and flexibility. Out of

Rani Chennamma of Kittur was one of the first women rulers of India who fought against the might of the British Empire in 1824. Rani Chennamma was born in 1778 in a small village of Kakati in Belgaon distt of the State of Karnataka.

She was born into the Lingayat Community to a man named Dhulappa Desai. From a very young age she was trained in horse riding,sword fighting, archery and diplomacy. At a very young age of 15 yrs, she was married to the King of Kittur and became the Queen of Kittur.

It is said that King of Kittur Mallasarja was once moving around in the neighbouring kingdoms to find support to fight Tipu Sultan. It is then, when he came across Chennamma and he immediately got attracted to her sheer confidence and bravery.

Rani Chennamma and King Mallasarja had a son together who died very soon after the death of King Mallasarja in 1816. As the Queen of Kittur, Rani Chennamma immediately adopted Shivalingappa as her son and declared him the heir to the throne of Kittur.

This did not go well with the British East India Company who was enforcing the Doctrine of Lapse those days, according to which the adopted children of the Indian rulers were not allowed to become their heirs and if the native rulers did not have children of their own, their...

KRISHNA ELLA - THE MAN BEHIND COVAXIN

On the border between Tamilnadu and erstwhile Andhra , lies the temple town of Thiruthani, one of the six famed abodes of Lord Muruga. Krishnamurthy Ella was born in 1969,

in an agricultural family to middle class parents. No one could have imagined his trajectory.

Perhaps because of his background, Krishna wanted to study agriculture. His father wasn’t pleased - he told his son “Nobody becomes a farmer by just studying agriculture” .

Unfazed, Krishna joined University of Agricultural sciences in Bangalore. His passion and hardwork earned him a gold medal. Unlike “ordinary” gold medalists, he wasn’t content to get a job.

Nevertheless he supported himself after undergrad by working briefly in the agricultural division of Bayer Pharma. He longed for more. He got a rotary scholarship which enabled him to move to the US, to do his PhD in University of Wisconsin.

The scholarship was the wind under his wings. There was no looking back.

His speciality was molecular biology.

While in the US, he met Suchitra, an economics graduate and married her.

Average Indians in US would dream of a green card for themselves.

Sthala Puranam says that, there lived a Peasant Nambaduvan, who was great Vishnu Bhakta. He was a Harijan and couldn't enter the Temple
Dwajasthambam of the temple obstructed his Darshan, so Mahavishnu asked Dwajasthambam to move leftwards

One day while walking towards the temple, he was stopped by an asura who was hungry & wanted to eat Nambaduvan. Nambaduvan asked permission from asura to worship Mahavishnu and then, asura could eat him. Mahavishnu (Nambi )was pleased by his devotion and came outside the temple.

While returning, Mahavishnu appeared as a Brahmin and tried to convince him to go away from the asura. But, Nambaduvan wanted to keep his promise and went near rakshasa.  The asura was pleased that Nambaduvan returned to him and promised that he wouldn't kill him.

Nambaduvan sang glorious songs there of Mahavishnu and gifted those to asura. Suddenly Rakshasa roopam was changed to a Brahmin, whose name was Soma Sharma. Panguni Bramosthavam, and Karthigai Kaisiga Ekathasi is celebrated in a grand manner here.

SRI KANTESH HANUMANTHA, KADARAMANDALAGI (KAR)

KANTESHA means Prabhu full of brightness.
Here, Sri Hanuman appears with a front face and sparkling eyes. Earlier, the village was also called KANTESHPURI on the name of Kantesha Hanuman.

Several thousands of years ago, Hanuman lived in this village. He once saw the Sun and mistaking it to be a fruit, began flying towards it. Since then, this village came to be known as Kadara Man Dalagi. (Kadar means rays, mandala is cluster of rays).

It is believed that King Janmejaya had set up the shrine to get rid of his difficulties.
There is a small pond on the right side of the kshetram where Teppotsava (Float festival) is celebrated.

Kanaka Dasa has praised Sri Kantesha in his various poetic compositions.

Kanaka Dasa was the first devotee to popularize the power of Kantesha. It is said that once Kanaka Dasa was deeply wounded in a battle. To seek blessings, he visited Tirupati but Sri Venkatesha appeared in his dream and advised him to see Kantesha first before seeing him.

हिमालय पर्वत की एक बड़ी पवित्र गुफा थी।उस गुफा के निकट ही गंगा जी बहती थी।एक बार देवर्षि नारद विचरण करते हुए वहां आ पहुंचे।वह परम पवित्र गुफा नारद जी को अत्यंत सुहावनी लगी।वहां का मनोरम प्राकृतिक दृश्य,पर्वत,नदी और वन देख उनके हृदय में श्रीहरि विष्णु की भक्ति अत्यंत बलवती हो उठी।

और देवर्षि नारद वहीं बैठकर तपस्या में लीन हो गए।इन्द्र नारद की तपस्या से घबरा गए।उन्हें हमेशा की तरह अपना सिंहासन व स्वर्ग खोने का डर सताने लगा।इसलिए इन्द्र ने नारद की तपस्या भंग करने के लिए कामदेव को उनके पास भेज दिया।वहां पहुंच कामदेव ने अपनी माया से वसंतऋतु को उत्पन्न कर दिया।

पेड़ और पौधों पर रंग बिरंगे फूल खिल गए और कोयलें कूकने लगी,पक्षी चहकने लगे।शीतल,मंद,सुगंधित और सुहावनी हवा चलने लगी।रंभा आदि अप्सराएं नाचने लगीं ।किन्तु कामदेव की किसी भी माया का नारद पे कोई प्रभाव नहीं पड़ा।तब कामदेव को डर सताने लगा कि कहीं नारद क्रोध में आकर मुझे श्राप न देदें।

जैसे ही नारद ने अपनी आंखें खोली, उसी क्षण कामदेव ने उनसे क्षमा मांगी।नारद मुनि को तनिक भी क्रोध नहीं आया और उन्होने शीघ्र ही कामदेव को क्षमा कर दिया।कामदेव प्रसन्न होकर वहां से चले गए।कामदेव के चले जाने पर देवर्षि के मन में अहंकार आ गया कि मैने कामदेव को हरा दिया।

नारद फिर कैलाश जा पहुंचे और शिवजी को अपनी विजयगाथा सुनाई।शिव समझ गए कि नारद अहंकारी हो गए हैं और अगर ये बात विष्णु जी जान गए तो नारद के लिए अच्छा नहीं होगा।ये सोचकर शिवजी ने नारद को भगवन विष्णु को ये बात बताने के लीए मना किया। परंतु नारद जी को ये बात उचित नहीं लगी।

SIRSI MARIKAMBA DEVI, UTTAR KANNADA DIST. (KAR)

Also known as Doddamma (elder sister of all Mariammas). Marikamba of Sirsi is both Mari (terror) as well as Maremma (savior). She is terror in anger & Mother in love. That is why she is called Marikamba.

There was a man by the name of Asadi/ Basava. He used to attend a fair at the neighboring village. Once, he was harassed by some men due to his poor status. So he did not go to the fair. Instead, he stayed in his village Sirsi and prayed to Devi.

One night, he had a dream where Devi Kali informed him about her presence in a tank at his village. When the tank was searched, people found a box with parts of murti. The different parts were assembled together and since then Sirsi Devi became popular in the region.

The kshetram has extremely striking murals in ‘Kaavi’ art. It is an art form of the Konkan region of coastal Karnataka. This stunning art involves creation of patterns in red colour against a white background.
Marikamba rathyatra is one of the biggest Car festivals in Karnataka.

Bhaktavatsala Perumal Thirukovil

Bhaktavatsala Perumal Kovil is located in Thirunindravur and is one among the 108 Divya Deshams. Mahavishnu is worshipped here as Bhaktavatsala Perumal and Lakshmi Devi as Ennai Petra Thayar.

Sthala Puranam says that, Varuna Deva had worshipped Mahavishnu here. Once Mahalakshmi was angry with perumal and left Vaikuntam. She came and stood (Nindra) here. Thus this place is called as Tiru Nindra Oor, where Oor means place. Samudra Rajan ( Mahalakshmi's father) requested

Mahavishnu to bring back Devi. Mahavishnu comes here and calms Devi and they return to Vaikuntam. As Mahavishnu listened to Samudra Rajan who is his Bhaktha, perumal is called Bhaktavatsala Perumal.
Another story says that, Kubera once lost his Wealth. He prayed to

Ennai Petra Thayar and regained his lost wealth. Those who lose wealth worship Devi here. Temple is also called Sukra Kshetram Devotees visit this Temple to get their wishes fulfilled. Chitra Pournami, Navaratri, Ekadashi are very famous here.
