In 2021, I spent 3 days in the wilderness training with a Navy SEAL and a small team.

We covered ~20 miles across rugged terrain, carrying 60+ pound packs, in some of the most beautiful country I’ve seen.

We learned how to:

• survive + operate in the wilderness
• build a high-performing team
• communicate effectively
• thrive in ambiguity
• lead and be led

Above all, the most impactful lesson was how Navy SEALs develop mindset.

What is mindset?

In simple terms, mindset is how you view and process the world around you.

It influences how we think, feel and act in any situation.

Our mindset is impacting us (for better or worse) every moment of every day, whether we realize it or not.

Today is my 32nd birthday.

Over the last month, I asked several 90-year-olds what advice they would give to their 32-year-old selves.

Here's the life advice everyone needs to hear:

1. Now and then, break out the fancy china and drink the good wine for no reason at all.

2. Dance at weddings until your feet are sore.

3. Tell your partner you love them every night before falling asleep. Someday you’ll find the other side of the bed empty and wish you could.

4. Don’t fear sadness, as it tends to sit right next to love.

Directional markets:

There is no point in the market being directional and you adjusting a non-directional trade.

As a general rule, you should only adjust once or maximum twice and then give up on firefighting.

Then you should side with a directional move.

Mistake of a non-directional trader:

Non-directional traders face heavy losses in directional markets.

If you are able to limit your losses in such scenarios, your risk management will improve.

The "I can adjust any move" mindset has to vanish for this to improve.

Big Range:

Moves in a big range are usually violent, and this is where non-directional traders lose money despite the fact that they are correct in assuming that the market is range bound.

Level-based stops work best in such an environment with reduced quantities.

Amateurs focus on Profits.

Professionals focus on Cash Flow.

Cash Flow Statement 101: 🧵

The cash flow statement shows cash moving in and out of a company over specific time periods.

Since it's Jan right now, the two most common will be:

■ 3 Quarters
■ 1 Year

Below, we can see CrowdStrike's cash flow over the past 9 months. The time frame is at the top $CRWD

There are three key parts to a cash flow statement:

1️⃣ Operating Activities (Running the business)
2️⃣ Investing Activities (Investing in the business)
3️⃣ Financing Activities (Paying for the business)

There's freedom in how it gets reported, but this is the basic structure

Let's specifically look at operating activities

The top line-item is NET INCOME.

You'd think this would represent the money a company puts in the bank at the end of the year.

But that's NOT THE CASE

Net Income backs out NON-CASH charges. The cash flow statement adds them back in.

Including:

■ Depreciation: Value of asset decreasing
■ Amortization: Expensing pre-paid cost
■ Stock-Based Compensation: Paying employees w/ equity

Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja, The Lion Of Kerala, who had humbled Hyder Ali, Tipu Sultan and the British in his lifetime, a truly great warrior. Also referred to as Cotiote Rajah and Pychy Rajah, one of the earliest revolutionary warriors of India, much before the 1857 Mutiny.
