''He who maintains the Saligrama shila, the Tulasi, and the conch in one place, becomes very dear to Lord Narayana." - Brahma Vaivaarta Purana.

WHAT IS A SALAGRAMA?

The Saligrama is an extremely sacred stone found in the holy Gandhaki river in the Himalayas.
They are considered the same as the Supreme Lord Himself and are worshiped throughout the temples in India, Nepal and Bangladesh.
As per Gautamiya Tantra, near the kali - Gandaki river, there is a big place called Salagram.
The stones which appear in that place are called Salagramas.
According to the Hindu tradition, this stone is the shelter for a small insect known as "Vajra-Keeta" that has a diamond tooth which cuts through the Saligram stone and stays inside it.
The Saligrama stones are hundreds of million years old when the Himalaya was an ocean floor. The Saligrams are specifically described as fossil-stones which have taken shape in the Gandaki-river, and as characterized by the presence of discus marks.
The legend related at length tells us that Gandaki, the lady-devotee, performed penance for so many years, and that she got a boon from Lord Vishnu, which made Him to reside in her womb.
Saligrama is usually black in color with the symbol of Sudarshana Chakra. The Chakras can be seen both outside and inside.

The marks on the Saligrama gives it a special significance, with the pattern often representing that of Sudarshan Chakra, the Discus of Vishnu.
The Saligrams come in different colours, such as red, blue, yellow, black, green.
All the varieties are considered very sacred.

The yellow and golden colour Saligrams are considered as the most auspicious ones and bestow immense wealth and prosperity to the devotee.

"Hinduism was one of the world's most easy-going faith traditions, famed for it's non-persecutory history."

I can assure you, it is NOT.

It is neither easy-going, nor non-persecutory. In fact it is the very opposite.

Thread.

Modern Hinduism is a British colonial concept, created in concert with Brahmins, who are at the "apex" of the caste system. The word "Hindoo" in fact, is of Persian origin, meaning a person who lives in the Indus valley.

Colonialists who attempted to study Indian religion in the 18th century (NOT, at the time, Hinduism) were baffled by it. Strata of people living distinctly (the caste system) with overlapping gods didn't fit into their Judeo-Christian understanding of religion.

Which has an ecclesiastical authority, a holy book etc., which Indian religions lacked. In studying "The Hindoo", colonialists prioritized textual sources of knowledge, which is where Brahmins, the priestly caste with a monopoly over education/text come in.

Brahminism was a distinct "religion" (although i don't really want to use the term in this way) that was frankly terrorized of other castes. In fact, the very basis of Brahminism is oppression. Brahmins had scholars who recorded *Brahminical* canon textually.
