WHAT IS OPEN INTEREST, HOW TO ANALYZE IT AND DOES IT WORK?

In the thread I'll explain everything about Open interest and also all the tools used to analyze it and my personal opinion.

THIS IS THE ONLY THREAD YOU'LL EVER NEED ON OPEN INTEREST.

 1: What is Oi?

Support if Mr A buys 10 lots of 17000ce in Nifty and Mr B sells 10 lots of call in Nifty then the total Oi on 17000 strike price will be 10.

So Oi is basically the number of outstanding contracts which are not squared off.
2: What is Oi used for?

Oi is only used to determine support and resistance on a particular strike price.
For eg: Nifty 16000pe has the highest Oi and 16200pe has to highest Oi.

So 16000 and 16200 level can be considered as good supports.

In the same way, 16500 ce has highest Oi and it can be considered as a resistance.
3: But why?

Highest Oi at 16500ce indicates that highest number of people have sold it BUT it also means that highest number of people have Bought it!

If 16500 acts as resistance, the option will go to 0 and all the buyers will lose money.
So why do we consider it as resistance?

Why do we look at things from an option seller's perspective?
4: It is generally said that option sellers have deep pockets and they will do anything to protect their position.

And also most of the option sellers are positional hence considering things from their perspective can work .

But there's a catch!
5: Before that I'll explain the different tools/ways used to analyse oi

- Total Oi.
I've explained it already in the above example. 16200pe,16000pe on the put side have highest Oi
And 16500ce and the highest TOTAL OI on the call side. Hence we can expect market to trade between this range.
- Change in Oi

Change in oi represents the total change in Oi "TODAY" or present day/right now.

For example 16300pe has the highest addition on change in oi.

Hence we can expect 16300pe to be a good support since option sellers are building their postions.
- Intraday unwinding:

Taking the above example, lets say if market starts to trade below 16300, then the change in Oi figure of 69k at 16300pe will start to drop.

This indicates that 16300pe writers are giving up and this is a bearish sign.
- Positional unwinding:

If the change in Oi figure, starts to turn negative , then it means that the positional option writers are giving up which is a stronger sign.
For example: The change in oi at 16200ce is negative(-4.9k) which clearly indicates that 16200 call writers have given up indicating bullishness in the market.
6: What should you consider?

Out of these 4 tools what should you consider?

So there is no black and white answer you have to take reference from these tools and form your own view. You have to look at everything.
7: DO I BELIEVE OI STILL WORKS?

NO!

In 2018, Total Oi used to work very well.
In2019, Change in Oi was working very well.

But in 2020, Oi completely stopped working.
8: From 2020, the strikes with the highest oi started to breach.

Earlier it was very rare to see the strikes with highest oi get breached. Market used to perfectly respect it. But that's not the case now.
9: For eg: In Banknifty the oi gets built on every 500pts interval.

If Banknifty is at 35800, then 36000ce will have highest oi and 35000pe will have highest oi.

If Banknifty goes above 36000 , then 36000ce oi will start to drop
and 36000pe will start to build up. Hence the edge is lost.

Oi will keep on building and unwinding at every 500 pts strike price Which does make it useful in 2022.

1: Being wrong and still making money.

We as option sellers can be wrong with our market view and still end up making money because of the power of theta decay and adjustments to some extent.

Adjustments work better as get closer to expiry since decay is the highest.

2: Theta decay

The biggest reason and one of the prime reasons is the theta decay.

Option sellers always have an advantage because the as time passes, the option premium falls even if the underlying instrument doesn't move.

3:Playing directional view

Option selling also enables us to take a directional view. In fact, directional view along with theta decay makes it a solid combination.

Debit spreads and credit spreads works great for a directional view.

4: Playing Neutral view

We can make money in option selling even if the market doesn't move as the otm options will go to 0 with the help of theta decay. It's the most fascinating thing.

This is what attracted many into option selling.

How do I handle big overnight gaps?

As I mostly take neutral positions overnight, I've been asked this a lot. So here you go.

1 : Take the right position sizing:

If you have the correct position size then there's nothing to fear from big gaps.

I like to take positions in such a way that I don't lose more than 2-3: incase of a big gap. This provides mental piece.

2: Have a calm mind:

This is of prime importance and somethin where most of the guys have trouble. Constantly panicking is going to do no good. What's going to happen will happen.

Having a calm mind allows you to think and act more clearly.

3: The 3 way rule:
If the markets open a a big gap there are not just going to stay there. Three things can happen.

a) It can go up : In this case you can use the move to recover our money.

b)It can go down : Just like the previous point you can take good advantage of it.

c) It stays there: After a big gap, obviously the IVs will explode. If the market stays then, premiums will be high and it will provide excellent opportunity to play neutral and recover your losses or atleast some part of it.

HOW TRADING FROM A CORPORATE ACCOUNT CAN HELP YOU TO SAVE TAXES?

Since I myself have started trading from a corporate account recently, I'll share about my reasons for doing so and how drastically it can help to reduce taxes.

1: Save taxes:

The prime objective was only and only to reduce taxes. There's no other reason to trade from a corporate account.

2: Form a Pvt Ltd company : I've formed up a Pvt Ltd company since that's what I was advised by majority of the people including my CA as opposed to LLP/HUF.

3: Claiming Expenses: This is the most beneficial aspect of a pvt ltd company.

You can literally claim any expenses in the name of the company. Some of them are:

- Rent expense: You can literally claim your office rent as an expense. Your registered office can also be your own house where you live.

Further you can also claim electricity expenses and what not.

Simple and effective way 2 make Money


Idea 1:- Use pivot level like 14800 in case of nifty and sell 14800straddle monthly expiry (365+335) exit if nifty closes on daily basis below S1 or above R1

After closing below S1 if it closes above S1 next day or any day enter the same position again vice versa for R1

Idea2:- Use R1 and S1 corresponding strikes multiple
Incase of R1 15337 take 15300ce
N in case of S1 14221 use 14200pe
Sell both and hold till expiry or exit if nifty closes below S1 or above R1 around closing
If the same bounces above S1 and falls below R1 re-enfer same strikes

Use same criteria for nifty, usdinr and banknifty

(This is must)Use this margin rule for 1lot banknifty pair keep 4Lax margin
For nifty one lot keep 3Lax
For usdinr 100lots keep 4Lax

I bet you if you do this on consistent basis your ROI will be more than 70% on yearly basis.

Ok, I'll hop on this Elizabeth Warren/Native American testing bandwagon (gently and non-politically).

I've been a @23andMe customer for a while, and have followed their ancestry updates closely.

All is more or less as expected....except for this bit about Native American.


The family is almost completely composed of Spanish peasants (from various regions) who emigrated, along with a massive wave in the late 19th-cent./early 20th-cent., to Cuba back when it was a booming economy (richer than Spain's) and worth emigrating to (Communism killed that).

Also, the native population of Cuba was annihilated early on---was the first place the Spanish colonized after all. Having a native background in Cuba would be like having the same in, say, Massachusetts, particularly if you're (say) mostly Irish. Just really, really unlikely.

(Note: the North African/Arab background is less mysterious. The Iberian peninsula was part of the Muslim world for centuries. It would be odd *not* to have some Arab/Middle Eastern background coming from Spain. Given the family is mostly from Northern Spain, it's small though.)

I have a Spanish passport, have been back to the ancestral villages in Spain, seen the church where my grandmother was baptized, my grandfather told me stories about growing up as the child of Spanish colonists in rural Cuba. The native bit just clashes with all the family lore.

Dhritarashtra's charioteer so that he could describe him the events of the upcoming war.

But, even before questions of war could begin, Dhritarashtra asked him to describe how the world looks like from space.

This is how he described the face of the world:

सुदर्शनं प्रवक्ष्यामि द्वीपं तु कुरुनन्दन। परिमण्डलो महाराज द्वीपोऽसौ चक्रसंस्थितः॥
यथा हि पुरुषः पश्येदादर्शे मुखमात्मनः। एवं सुदर्शनद्वीपो दृश्यते चन्द्रमण्डले॥ द्विरंशे पिप्पलस्तत्र द्विरंशे च शशो महान्।

—वेद व्यास, भीष्म पर्व, महाभारत


Meaning:-

हे कुरुनन्दन ! सुदर्शन नामक यह द्वीप चक्र की भाँति गोलाकार स्थित है, जैसे पुरुष दर्पण में अपना मुख देखता है, उसी प्रकार यह द्वीप चन्द्रमण्डल में दिखायी देता है। इसके दो अंशो मे पीपल और दो अंशो मे विशाल शश (खरगोश) दिखायी देता है।


Meaning: "Just like a man sees his face in the mirror, so does the Earth appears in the Universe. In the first part you see leaves of the Peepal Tree, and in the next part you see a Rabbit."

Based on this shloka, Saint Ramanujacharya sketched out the map, but the world laughed

❤✈️🌎 2 years ago today @JamesIvings and I sold all our belongings and left the UK to travel for a year. We've never been happier and we have no plans to ever return there 🙂

Since then we've started a remote web dev company @SquarecatWebDev and been lucky enough to have completed several freelance projects 💻 that have kept us on the road.

In the last few months we've become a huge part of this amazing new Maker community and have found so many new friends from @makerskitchen, @women_make_ and several others! 🥰

We love travelling together (even if I'm only a glorified laptop watcher 😒) but we're both much happier being able to share our ideas outside of our own little bubble and our products have benefitted too!

Here's to another year of nomading with my favourite person and to the Maker community continuing to grow with our help! Maybe one day we'll all get to meet each other ✌️ 💛
