Markets are all about patterns and tendencies that have an edge. Here are a few I have observed and learned over the years.

A Thread.

 Identify the Sector(s) of this cycle. Typically mid caps which are enjoying an earnings tailwind due to the external environment and you have a 3 year visibility into a 25% or higher eps growth. Will seem expensive throughout the cycle but will make big money.
Breakout post a genuine earnings surprise. Popularly called PEAD. Structural pattern. Works like a charm at all points of any cycle.
Serious debt reduction. Drives as much shareholder value as a high growth stock.
52 week highs across stocks in a given sector. Something is happening. Pay attention.
All time highs in ANY stock.
Spin offs and demergers. There is one whole book on this. Huge edge works more often than not.
New IPOs breaking out to all time highs a month or so after the listing.
Low capacity utilisation, negative profits and a turnaround in the sector - typically buy on first signs of turnaround.
Media pessimism about a sector reaching highs as per news reports in papers/mags while the sector in forming consolidating bottom or breaking out - huge winners here.
52 week low + insider buying + but no sector issues ie sector not likely to die or go into oblivion.
Large opportunity good execution and good management will always be overvalued, ignore pe and add them during corrections without waiting for pe to correct to "my value levels” which will never come.
3 years 50% test, Can this business trade 50% lower after 3 years? Can be done for predictable businesses only. This one by @BMTheEquityDesk
Can the profits (5 years out) in the future be equal to the current market cap? This was Ramdeo Agarwal if I remember it right.
Change in management (especially for financials but generally for others).
Playing the liquidity premium and discount in small caps in bull and bear markets. In bear markets they are oversold and and in bull over bought - hence small caps make for very good market cycle play
Fall after a sharp deterioration in margin due to temp factors, which is likely to bounce back.
This is the big one and may happen due one of the reasons above. Delta in RoCE leads to multi baggers - esp if delta is from single digits to two digits.
All engines firing. Improved margins faster cash flows and better asset turns which happen when cwip assets start sweating by @varadhar1

Good time to buy is when a theme or segment is ignored by the market and not when it is popular.

When you buy what is popular when it is popular, need to forego returns for few years.

So, @elonmusk, you do know that the proposed tax on UNREALIZED capital gains on billionaires is just that, a proposal, right? Why would you burden yourself with an enormous tax until the proposal becomes tax law, which is highly unlikely? A couple questions for you. 1/

You note that as you earn no salary or bonus the only way to personally pay taxes is to sell stock. What became of the $22 million you received on the sale of Zip2, which you founded with your brother? After paying taxes on the realized gain, did you invest the net proceeds? 2/


After being fired by the PayPal board and replaced by Peter Thiel, PayPal was sold to eBay. You received over $165 million in eBay shares from the sale. Do you still own them? Did you pay taxes on any realized gain and invest the net proceeds? Surely you have non-Tesla assets? 3/

You have committed to owning all of your shares in Tesla for the duration. Why would you break your word simply on a tax proposal until it becomes law? I understand you invested $6.5 million in Tesla when you joined the company in 2004, the year following its founding. 4/


Since joining Tesla, have you made any additional investments in the company or is the majority of ownership derived from share grants? I presume you will ultimately sell shares to finance exercises of expiring stock options instead of continued borrowing and pledging shares? 5/

Thread: History of Mogadishu and it’s conquest by Imaam Al Yaqubi


One of the First Imaams of the Hiraab Imamate was Mohamed Ibn Imaam Ahmed ibn Imam Ahmed Ibn Imaam Mohamoud Ibn Imaam Cumar Halol Al Yacquubi (Abgaal) during the year 1097 hijri.


After the collapse of the Ajuuran Abgaal nomads from the interior had started moving to take over the strategic port town of Mogadishu which was then under the muzzafar dynasty. By the 1600s Abgaal warriors had captured the city and set up their base in shingaani.


Mogadishu at the time was a large and well known port town. The Abgaal clan taking over control allowed them to obtain political power and world wide recognition.


Under Imaam Yaqubi’s time in power it’s reported that French merchants had arrived at the port in 1701
and stayed for 11 days. They had attempted to take the city but were successfully repulsed.

So, I want to talk about how sexual harassment and fair pay are linked at Google (and beyond), because I think that's an angle that isn't being highlighted enough in the coverage of these walk-outs. I'm going to frame it largely around my personal experience there. Thread.

When I was sexually harassed by the director of the area I was working in, I was afraid to report it because I was worried that "getting him in trouble" would result in the subtle retaliation of missed leadership opportunities.

I wanted to continue working on the team I was on, because I'd gained a lot of very deep knowledge and expertise in that area, as well as reputation and camaraderie with the other folks working in that area. I didn't want to make the situation more "difficult."

To get promoted at Google, several need to happen: 1. you need opportunities for ownership and leadership above your current level (basically, opportunities to show you're working at the next level you're trying to get promoted to). The work you're "assigned" has a big impact.

2. You need glowing reviews from peers, *at or particularly above the level you're hoping to get promoted to.* Basically, you need people a lot more senior than you to say you're doing awesome work.

Let's address the over thinkers first.

Do you have any idea why you overthink?

'Yea. Because others are judging how shy I am.'

Incorrect.

Others are thinking about themselves, not you.

But the fact that you think they are thinking about you, you fuck up the interaction.

Now you stay in your head too much & avoid the present moment.

A major no no in the social world.

Your tendency to think that others are judging you for being shy, coincidentally makes you more shy.

And that's when you start giving off a strange vibration to the social setting.

This is when you begin attracting comments like 'why are you so quiet?'
