With US having vaccinated 9M+ and India starting it's vaccination plan soon (Jan 16th) some have started scaremongering about vaccines via alarmist WhatsApp forwards, FB/Twitter posts and other social media platforms

 Most of the cases of severe reaction to vaccine have been mostly Anaphylaxis which is a severe, (in some cases potentially life-threatening allergic reaction) It can occur after exposure to allergen which can be peanut, shellfish, bee sting etc. or even contents of a vaccine.
CDC guidelines clearly state that patients should be monitored for anaphylaxis at vaccination sites and also prescribes protocols on what steps to take

Recommendations include urging sites where vaccines are given to be ready to handle anaphylaxis cases, including by having epinephrine. People who have been vaccinated should stay to be monitored for 15 minutes if they have no history of allergy and 30 minutes if they do.
Based on initial vaccination data it is estimated that probability of suffering anaphylaxis is 11.1 per million i.e. 0.00111% (i.e. extremely rare condition)
Dr. Nancy Messonnier, head of the CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said "Right now, the known and potential benefits of the current Covid-19 vaccines outweigh the known and potential risks of getting Covid-19."
Now let's compare this with the data for the fatality rate from COVID-19 itself.
In a research paper published in the scientific journal Nature, a team of scientists led by Megan O’Driscoll and Henrik Salje collected data on COVID-19 deaths in 45 countries and nearly two dozen seroprevalence studies.

Using this data, they determined sex- and age-specific IFR (Infection Fatality Rate).
Even when we compare the group with the lowest IFR who will get vaccinated right now (Note: vaccines are not still approved for use in kids) 20-24 group IFR at 0.006% is still ~5x higher than the anaphylaxis probability at 0.00111%
If you look at seniors (60-64 category) for e.g. their IFR at 0.456% is 410x the chances of an anaphylaxis event.
Putting aside COVID-19, If an elder was told that the probability of dying was 400 times higher than probability of having a severe reaction to a shot I am sure that most would chose the former over the later
Now every time you inject a foreign object into the human body, be it mRNA nanoparticle [Pfizer/Moderna], inactivated virus [Covaxin] or adenovirus-vector [AstraZaneca/CovidShield] via vaccination there is bound to be some reaction to it as the immune system reacts to it.
Some will have side effects which mostly go away after few days or instant intervention like epi -pen while a very very tiny sliver of vaccine recipients will unfortunately have much worse outcomes no doubt.
But once has to keep in mind the balance of the the risk associated with contracting severe COVID (which can cause long lasting damage to body including up to death) vs a reaction to the vaccine which is way rarer event.
As we go along in 2021 there will be constant bombardment of alarming news saying there was a case in country XYZ where following symptoms were observed which will cause panic.
But one has to remember that these are raw absolute numbers you are looking at and not percentages which matter more when vaccines are being administered to millions of folks around the world.
By the same logic as above if I say that there were x number of accidents on highway ABC it might appear to casual reader that highway ABC might be dangerous to travel on.
But when you look at % of accidents on that freeway vs overall traffic it will be very small %. There is always a non-zero probability of death when one drives a car but one does not consciously think of it all the time when they get on the highway in terms of raw accidents.
Everyone has to make a decision on their own on what their risk appetite is for contracting severe COVID vs adverse an reaction to vaccine. They can choose to take the vaccine or not but that decision should not be influenced by fearmongering clickbait type of media articles 🙏

Shamasastry received a Ph.D Citation from Oriental University of Washington in 1919

and the Campbell Memorial Gold Medal from the Royal Asiatic Society, Mumbai Chapter, in 1921. Krishna Raja Wadiyar IV conferred on him the title “Arthashastra Visharada” in 1926 while the Viceroy and the Governor General of India conferred the title “Mahamahopadyaya” in 1930.

Sharing one incident... After Modi's Trichy youth conference, the very next morning when police were clearing up their mini-control room, they found 5 strange boys who were roaming there with bags. When police enquired them "sir, we are from Subramaniapuram in Trichy.

Whatever political meeting or conference is held in this ground, we come here on the same night or morning hours to collect the Liquor bottles to sell in the scrap shop for 50 paisa to 1 rupee per bottle and we used to earn Rs 200 to Rs 400 on each such event.

Even in the last DMK meeting the very next day we collected around 1500 bottles. But for Modi's BJP meeting, we could not find even a single bottle in the whole ground. We are coming around and around and not a single bottle in any corner of the G Corner ground in Trichy,

#TodayInHistory Masterda Surya Sen is brutally tortured and executed by the British in 1934. The hero behind the Chittagong armory raid, that shook the British like never before. A truly great revolutionary.


Masterda was the one who led one of the largest ever raids on the British at Chittagong, attacking their armory, cantonment, the exclusive Europeans only club there and the telegraph office there.

Never had the British witnessed such a massive assault on their institutions, in such a coordinated manner. Though the raid was suppressed and it’s perpetrators arrested, the message it had sent out to Indians was clear, take up the arms against the British rule.

The man who shook the British so much in Bengal, was born in a small village called Noapara, near Chittagong( now in Bangladesh) in 1894. His father, Ramniranjan Sen was a teacher himself.

As an intermediate student in 1916, while studying at Chittagong, he learnt about the history of the Indian freedom movement from his teachers. Motivated by one of his teachers, he joined the Anushilan Samiti, one of the noted revolutionary groups in Bengal then.

The insidious thing about how people gaslight Hindus about the erasure of our ancestors' oppression is that they often do it in soft and civil(izing) tones. And it always comes from people who seem to otherwise care about oppression, people who are "well read" and "progressive".

Theirs is a quiet violence, clear and flowing as if it were beautiful and natural and peaceful, even as it corrodes and expands the edges of the hollowness created by lies. Silencing is a kind of acid.

Move on, I had been told for years. The past is in the past.

Except how do people move on from something they are either never told to study or told to never study? How do they move on from a past that is far worse than what they’ve been told (or not told)? How do they move on from a past that keeps reinventing itself today?

Sometimes when I speak of the erasure of Hindu persecution, I am gently, smugly corrected (it is always done civilly), "Indu, the information is there. No one is trying to hide it."

(That's how gaslighting works, right? It is arrogant and maddening and untethered to reality.)

Because the FACT is that’s not true at all. There are innumerable, insidious, systemic ways that people are hiding the truth. Ways that are supported and sustained by institutions, by scholars, by media conglomerates, by Hindu (American) politicians, proud internet trolls...

2) 2 Weeks ago, my dog was effected by it as well. He is hearing things that aren’t technically audible. I can tell by his body language and sounds. One week ago I began feeling a pressure in my head and ears. It wasn’t painful at all, but it was intense for a bit.

3) It reminded me of taking off in an airplane a bit. I felt like I was in a vacuum. It went on and off for a couple of days. I’ve picked up on frequencies and high pitched sounds (not audible to most) for 30 years, and today my right ear began to ring for longer than usual.

4) This is nothing unusual for me, with exception of the duration. This happens often with me. No, it’s not tinnitus. Only this time, when I spoke, there was reverb creating a high pitch in my ear from my voice. This lasted for about 30 minutes. It did not hurt, just annoying.

5) So yes, the frequencies are changing. What this means exactly, I am unsure of at the moment. Some will say electromagnetic fields, others will say ascension, and some will say pole shift. I honestly can’t say at this very moment.

1. I was walking in the woods yesterday and I had an epiphany. It wasn’t one I wanted to have. I was thinking about today’s class, where we are reading Kimmerer’s ‘Gathering Moss’. I’ve taught Braiding Sweetgrass in multiple classes every year since 2016. It’s eminently teachable

2. Both books are beautifully written. Students uniformly enjoy them as assigned reading. They do a great job communicating to non-Indigenous folks the contours of basic Indigenous relationships to more-than-human beings. They’re wildly popular with white readers.

3. I’ve found Braiding Sweetgrass to be a great entry point for non-Indigenous folks to Indigenous scholarship. But this is where yesterday’s epiphany comes in. Neither Braiding Sweetgrass or Gathering Moss tends to the deep deep lineages of Indigenous scholarship in Canada or US

4. As the popularity of ‘Braiding Sweetgrass’ has soared, I’ve seen more and more white folks wax on about ‘braiding knowledge’. But they often don’t know any of the lineages of these concepts beyond what is presented in this one book. They confidently run with this.

5. Kimmerer does a commendable job of weaving in her own experiences, her family stories+nods to some very important knowledge keepers who deserve to be celebrated for their work. But Braiding Sweetgrass does not tend to the citational politics Sara Ahmed & others teach us about
