Thread: The insurrection was seeded on social media platforms, then planned and broadcast on far-right

 For days leading up to yesterday’s electoral college certification, posters used social media sites like Gab and Parler, encrypted messaging platforms like Telegram, and the pro-Trump forum The Donald to organize and share information.
Some messages on the pro-Trump forum The Donald urged the murders of Democratic leaders like House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
As the mob prowled the capitol complex, some used livestreaming sites like DLive to boast of occupying lawmakers’ offices. Some even streamed from Nancy Pelosi's office.
While fringe sites aided and amplified yesterday’s mayhem, some of the biggest names in tech have abetted the coalescing of the violent far-right, online extremism researcher @MeganSquire0 told me.
“The mainstream platforms have turned a blind eye to groups and individuals inciting violence and harassing users for years,” she told me.
“After some half-hearted attempts to ban the accounts or tamp down on the violent rhetoric around the election, some of the extremists ended up relocating their audiences to newer, smaller, niche platforms," Squire told me.
Twitter suspended Trump last night, and Facebook did the same, now saying his page is indefinitely suspended. But there's still a ton of this stuff on both sites.
BTW — People like Baked Alaska, while they've been banned from places like YouTube, STILL have Instagram accounts where they're boasting of occupying Pelosi's office.
On DLive — the live-streaming site dominated by far-right voices like "Baked Alaska" (Tim “Treadstone” Gionet) and Nick Fuentes and his far-right/white nationalist "Groypers" — streamers get thousands in donations, and DLive takes a 20% cut.
These people, including the Proud Boys, are extremely active in 1-to-many channels on Telegram, and as @MeganSquire0 has pointed out, Telegram is about to start monetizing channels like that.
The Donald forum was originally on Reddit before being kicked off, and now it's on its own site (not sharing the domain) and apparently, their current host is giving them less than a day to ameliorate all the filth and threats and violence on the platform.
But they're already making backup domains, and I doubt this forum is going anywhere anytime soon.

Last week, @CleCityCouncil started reviewing Mayor Frank Jackson’s proposed city budget for 2021. There was robust discussion, and Documenters were there to cover it. Here’s a thread of what we learned last week about the #CLEBudget

First, it helps to know where we are in the budget process. From today through Feb. 24, the council will meet about the General Fund budget. The council will then agree on a budget with their changes (if any); 15 days after doing so, they can vote to make the budget official.


In other words, there’s still time to use your voice! The #refundcleveland tool can help. Create the #CLEBudget you want and send it to your council member. Click “Change the Budget” on the homepage and follow the on-screen instructions from there.

For 25 years, the GOP has had almost exclusive control of the FL legislature & admin.

It fashioned every law it could to advantage Republicans, gerrymandered at a bionic level & stymied popular efforts to increase voter participation such as restoration of felon voting rights.

During that same time, the FL GOP poured MILLIONS into turning the state party into a sophisticated, permanent, well-funded voter contact machine.

This gave GOP candidates two massive advantages: 1) they didn’t have to spend on selling the GOP position, 2) all of

in-state messaging got backed up by the RNC, and most importantly, the constant drum beat of Fox News.

There is no biological way to overstate the advantage that Fox News gives to Republicans in red states. MSNBC is NOT the opposite of Fox News.

MSNBC does not structure its programming around whipping up white grievance and fear. Whereas Fox News is the propaganda arm of the RNC, MSNBC is the left leaning version of CNN, not the DNC.

So when I say that Fox News is a huge advantage for the GOP, I know of what I speak.

In FL, Dem candidates spend a inordinate amount of time debunking Fox News lies, even to died in the wool Dems.

Because GOP candidates at every level do not have to spend on messaging, and so not have to spend on attacking Dem policy, they spend almost exclusively on 2 things:

Maker movement is doing to startups what startups did to corporations.

Here is why 👇

Startups fixed the problem of innovation, that corporations lack.

In big, slow corporations, innovation is a RISK and distraction from the core $$$ profitable business.

Agile startups could launch, iterate fast and eventually stumble upon new growing market opportunities.

However,

When a startup reaches product-market-fit, it has to 🚀 "grow at all costs" and reach market dominance before some giant corporation can replicate their new product and distribute it to their existing giant customer base.

Startup's "growth at all costs" often means growth at the expense of charging customers $$$ money.

Hence, to be sustainable, startups have to constantly chase investor money.

Startup teams spend more time finding and pleasing investors, than finding and pleasing customers.

95% of startups die because they run out of (investor) money + no business model + crazy investor expectations.

Same way corporations die, when unable to adjust to new technology and market shifts.

1/ Recently, I learned about the concept of ‘struggle porn’. This refers to the fetish of sacrificing nearly everything (health, relationships, time) for your startup. I fear that this label is creating more harm than good.

2/ @nateliason wrote a fabulous article about this topic, which first introduced me to this concept. Everyone should read it:

3/ @alexisohanian also recently spoke about struggle porn, though referring to it as ‘hustle porn.’ (as the co-founder of @hustlefundvc, obviously I take issue with this pejorative definition of ‘hustle’, but that’s another topic)

4/ Struggling in itself isn’t necessarily bad. Let’s be real here--if you’re going to start a startup, you will struggle. Founders should expect to work harder generally than employees. You will be challenged in many ways and also be super rewarded in others. This is normal.

5/ However, if you are over-indexing on hard work without clear purpose and degrading your mental health/relationships in the process--then this is very bad and we obviously should not celebrate this behavior.
