Myth & Realities of #GarudaPurana...šŸ§µ

There is an apprehension (myth) among people that, the text of Garuda Purana is inauspicious and hence cannot be read or the book be kept at home or should be read only on the occasion of death at home.
++

 People hesitate to keep this sacred text at their homes or read it because of its fearful subject matter. It is only a misconception due to the contents of Garuda Purana.

#REALITIES...

When it was explained/narrated by Paramatma #Vishnu Himself, how can it be inauspicious? ++
Even in #Bhagawadgita; #SriKrishna #ParamaAtma makes a reference to the law of Karma; death and its realities; reincarnation etc. But, we donā€™t consider Bhagawadgita as inauspicious; in fact we adore it. ++
Just because it deals with death and its aftermath it is incorrect to tag it as inauspicious.

In #BhagawadGita (Saankhya Yoga) #SriKrishna says that, " JaAtasya hi dHruvo mRutyuā€¦"

(indeed, certain is death for the born and it is inevitable)

Death is a reality though we hesitate to accept because of lack of its knowledge. Death grins only at those who have no understanding and that it has no pain for those who understand its implications and working. ++
In fact, entire epic of Garuda Purana is in the form of glorious dialogue between Bhagawan #Vishnu and his Divine mount #Garuda, an upadesha from the Supreme God #SriHariSarvottama. ++
GarudaPurana is a #SaAttvika Purana. A script that mentions about significance of, #Thulasi; #Cow (Gau); #Thila (sesame); Kusa (#Dharbha) is always auspicious and we find all these referred in #GarudaPurana. +
Is it not good to read #GarudaPurana, understand its contents, when one is alive instead of someone may be kith and kin reading it after the death?

It can be treated as learning that enhances oneā€™s spiritual knowledge to discipline himself and follow righteous path. ++
#GarudaPurana acts as a speed breaker for a person who is driving his life rashly. It can be treated as a caution for wrongdoers and acts as a direction to avoid committing sins. ++
One need not get scared with the contents of Garuda Purana either to read or to listen.

Everyone should read the sacred text of Garuda Purana at least once in their life time and there is nothing inauspicious about it and it is only an illusion. ++
Reading Garuda Purana will definitely change the mindset of an evil-doer or a sinner. +
Na #vasudevabhaktaanaam-ashubham vidyate kvachit
Janma-mrutyu-jaraa-vyaadhi-bhayam naivopajaayate;

No ill-fate befalls on the #devotees of Lord #Vaasudeva (#MahaVishnu) and they will never have fear from birth; death; old age and diseases; ++
#Merits of #GarudaPurana
As a custom we find in traditional Hindu families, parayana (reading) of GarudaPurana whenever there is a death in the family till 13th day ceremony (Vaikunta Samaradhana). Great merits are acquired from reading/listening Garuda Purana during that time.+
Those who narrate and the one who listens to this sacred Garuda Purana within ten days or even after the death of a person will get absolved from sins and is assured of happiness in this world as well as in the next world.++
Listening to Garuda Purana; one will get rid of sorrow; suffering and will be blessed with peace and prosperity.

Lord Vishnu would get pleased if the narrator of Garuda Purana is worshiped and it is as good as worshiping Lord SriHari. (Hari Preeti)
Listening/reading Garuda Purana during Mahalaya PithruPaksha is sacred and meritorious that pleases Pithru Devathas;

Donating the sacred book Garuda Purana to a Brahmana is highly meritorious.

Ok, I'll hop on this Elizabeth Warren/Native American testing bandwagon (gently and non-politically).

I've been a @23andMe customer for a while, and have followed their ancestry updates closely.

All is more or less as expected....except for this bit about Native American.


The family is almost completely composed of Spanish peasants (from various regions) who emigrated, along with a massive wave in the late 19th-cent./early 20th-cent., to Cuba back when it was a booming economy (richer than Spain's) and worth emigrating to (Communism killed that).

Also, the native population of Cuba was annihilated early on---was the first place the Spanish colonized after all. Having a native background in Cuba would be like having the same in, say, Massachusetts, particularly if you're (say) mostly Irish. Just really, really unlikely.

(Note: the North African/Arab background is less mysterious. The Iberian peninsula was part of the Muslim world for centuries. It would be odd *not* to have some Arab/Middle Eastern background coming from Spain. Given the family is mostly from Northern Spain, it's small though.)

I have a Spanish passport, have been back to the ancestral villages in Spain, seen the church where my grandmother was baptized, my grandfather told me stories about growing up as the child of Spanish colonists in rural Cuba. The native bit just clashes with all the family lore.

I get asked for writing tips a lot. Of all the ones Iā€™ve given, here are a few of the ones that seem to hold true and remain somewhat universal or at least mostly unobjectionable:

1. If you are a fast writer (i.e., if you compose first drafts very quickly) then you absolutely must become a slow editor. Much of what I call ā€œwritingā€ is really, for me, editing.

2. If you donā€™t read you cannot write a lot or well. Sure, maybe you can read like a maniac for a decade and then read less after that, but without some large volume of intake, there will never be a meaningful output.

2.1 I sometimes say that I feel like writing without reading is like trying to run a marathan on a cracker. And sadly I see many students struggling to write when they have simply never read enough to fuel that demand of the task at hand.

3. All writing is writing if one decides to treat it that way. If one takes some degree of intentional will when sending emails, posting on social media and writing notes and marginalia, then all of that can count as meaningful daily writing.

Bharat Darshana publishes a small monthly magazine which has some very interesting puranic anecdotes and snippets.

When I picked up this month's magazine, I was intrigued by a story which I want to share as below

This is a real-life incident as narrated by Prof. Krishna Bihari Pandey titled "Sati Savitri"

Sati Savitri is a well known puranic figure from Srimad DeviBhagwatham and Mahabharatha as one of those who fought with Yama to save her husband.

This story is a modern real-life experience which mimics the puranic account in it's own unique way.

The story occurs in 1975 with Prof and his wife in Delhi with professor working as a researcher in university. Prof's family is in Allahabad in a large joint family

Once Prof gets to know that his mother is not keeping well. He goes to his native and brings his mother. With dedicated care of his wife, his mother recovers quite remarkably and regains full stamina and strength

Mother-in-law & Daughter-in-law go out for shopping frequently

4/

Life's going smooth until one day when they receive a telegram that Prof's father is not keeping well.

His mother is distressed about the situation and requests her son to take her to the native. Prof is a little angry due to frequent travels and turns it down

A tactic I donā€™t appreciate at all because of how unfairly it penalizes low-leverage, junior employees, and those loyal enough not to question it, but thatā€™s negotiation for you after all. Weaponized information asymmetry.

And by the way, you should never be worried that an offer would be withdrawn if you politely negotiate.

I have seen this happen *extremely* rarely, mostly to women, and anyway is a giant red flag. It suggests you probably didnā€™t want to work there.

You wish there was no negotiating so it would all be more fair? I feel you, but itā€™s not happening.

Instead, negotiate hard, use your privilege, and then go and share numbers with your underrepresented and underpaid colleagues. [ā€¦]
