How do Hindus choose the right murti for their puja room?

#Thread

There are no universal rules for choosing murtis followed by all Hindus, but there are many guidelines followed by various Hindu communities.
As for which Devata to choose a murti of, typically a Hindu will select their Ishta Devata or personal favorite, most beloved Deity. This murti will be centermost on the shrine, and the most elaborate.
In addition, many Hindus add extra murtis to represent more of the pantheon in their puja room. Usually at least Ganesha is given a place, even if he is not the Ishta Devata.
This ubiquity in most puja rooms makes Ganesha the most popular Hindu Devata, even though he is not the most common Ishta Devata (an honor that goes to his father Shiva, followed by Hanuman).
The main other Devatas found in many puja rooms in addition to the Ishta Devata (or one of them may be the Ishta Devata) include Parvati, Shiva, Vishnu, and Krishna.
As for choosing which specific murti of a particular Devata, for most Hindus it is determined by what they can afford, and the size of murti they are equipped to properly house.
Some say that murtis taller than one’s thumb should not be kept at home, but most Hindus do not recognize the validity of this rule, including many Gurus and brahmin priests.

Great article from @AsheSchow. I lived thru the 'Satanic Panic' of the 1980's/early 1990's asking myself "Has eveyrbody lost their GODDAMN MINDS?!"

The 3 big things that made the 1980's/early 1990's surreal for me.

1) Satanic Panic - satanism in the day cares ahhhh!

2) "Repressed memory" syndrome

3) Facilitated Communication [FC]

All 3 led to massive abuse.

"Therapists" -and I use the term to describe these quacks loosely - would hypnotize people & convince they they were 'reliving' past memories of Mom & Dad killing babies in Satanic rituals in the basement while they were growing up.

Other 'therapists' would badger kids until they invented stories about watching alligators eat babies dropped into a lake from a hot air balloon. Kids would deny anything happened for hours until the therapist 'broke through' and 'found' the 'truth'.

FC was a movement that started with the claim severely handicapped individuals were able to 'type' legible sentences & communicate if a 'helper' guided their hands over a keyboard.
