How on this planet it is even possible to have such translation?

But the fact is, they are called Ashavarna NOT Avarna. Or in other term they are Varnshankara.

How could one make such fundamental error?

According to his own writing, he read some smriti written by Bhargava. So, it is very clear that he never read Manu's Smiriti, and read something else in English translation due to his Sanskrit deficiency.
