Part 2: Cyber Warfare

If you think we might only see wars happening on land, air or water then you're wrong, wars aren't limited to these now.

There's Cyber Space too, this is generally termed as ‘The 5th Generation Warfare’

India has already seen a sample of it recently during the Galwan Valley issue

Chinese govt backed hacker group called ‘Red Echo’ had done massive cyber attacks on India's critical infrastructure.

Due to the alertness of our ‘Cyber Response Team’ they couldn't cause much damage.
Wondering what happened?

A grid failure on 12 Oct '20 resulted in a major power outage in #Mumbai & its surrounding areas, affecting electricity supply, local trains etc.

It took hours for power supply to be gradually restored in a phase-wise manner.

https://t.co/VS2swghLXo
US based cyber security firm ‘Recorded Future’ released a report titled, ‘China-linked Group #RedEcho targets Indian Power Sector Amid Heightened Border Tensions’ that points to inflow of Chinese malware into India's critical infrastructure systems that manage electricity supply.
The report identifies RedEcho — a China based advanced persistent threat(APT) group — as the entity behind attempts to infiltrate India's power grids.

Recorded Future also stated that ‘Red Echo’ had targeted 10 vital nodes in India’s power distribution system & 2 seaports.
What were Red Echo’s targets?

Recorded Future lists these as suspected targets:

• Power System Operation Corporation Limited
• NTPC Limited
• NTPC Kudgi STPP
• Western Regional Load Despatch Centre
• Southern Regional Load Despatch Centre
• North Eastern Regional Load Despatch Centre
• Eastern Regional Load Despatch Centre
• Telangana State Load Despatch Centre
• Delhi State Load Despatch Centre
• DTL Tikri Kalan (Mundka)
• Delhi Transco Ltd (substation)
• V. O. Chidambaranar Port
• Mumbai Port Trust
China's #RedEcho used server #AXIOMATICASYMPTOTE to introduce #ShadowPad a backdoor Trojan malware into India's critical Infrastructure.

Security firm Kaspersky says ShadowPad is built to target supply-chain infrastructure in sectors like transportation, telecom, energy & more.
Recorded Future says the kind of infrastructure sought to be accessed by RedEcho, such as Regional Load Despatch Centres, has minimal espionage possibilities.

So why did they choose it??
RedEcho introduced #ShadowPad into India's critical Infrastructure but didn't activate, their plan was just to introduce it and activate all at the same time when needed causing a massive damage to India.
But due to alertness of our Cyber Response Team their plan was failed on time without causing much damage.

Now can you imagine the damage of hacked servers? Of China controlling our electricity?

Not China alone, it can be any other country, any other org!

Part 2

Lengthy again..

By 1974 the debate focused on whether there was a credible risk of explosion from the liquid fuel, or if this was manageable.

This risk led to the beginning of a major policy debate in the very heart of the secret state about whether this was an acceptable level of risk, or if there were alternative options open to consider.

There appears to have been a difference of opinion between different parts of government on what the right answer was in this case.

To the Royal Navy, charged with delivering the nuclear deterrent mission, the only acceptable answer was to step away from Chevaline and Polaris and upgrade to Poesidon as quickly as possible to maintain the credibility of the deterrent.

By contrast No10 was growing increasingly frustrated with what it saw as an inability by the Royal Navy to focus on delivering a capable SSBN force, & its constant demands to goldplate the solution – in one memo to the Prime Minister from his Private Secretary there is the line:

The best morning routine?

Starts the night before.

9 evening habits that make all the difference:

1. Write down tomorrow's 3:3:3 plan

• 3 hours on your most important project
• 3 shorter tasks
• 3 maintenance activities

Defining a "productive day" is crucial.

Or else you'll never be at peace (even with excellent output).

2. End the workday with a shutdown ritual

Create a short shutdown ritual (hat-tip to Cal Newport). Close your laptop, plug in the charger, spend 2 minutes tidying your desk. Then say, "shutdown."

Separating your life and work is key.

3. Journal 1 beautiful life moment

Delicious tacos, presentation you crushed, a moment of inner peace. Write it down.

Gratitude programs a mindset of abundance.

4. Lay out clothes

Get exercise clothes ready for tomorrow. Upon waking up, jump rope for 2 mins. It will activate your mind + body.

So the cryptocurrency industry has basically two products, one which is relatively benign and doesn't have product market fit, and one which is malignant and does. The industry has a weird superposition of understanding this fact and (strategically?) not understanding it.

The benign product is sovereign programmable money, which is historically a niche interest of folks with a relatively clustered set of beliefs about the state, the literary merit of Snow Crash, and the utility of gold to the modern economy.

This product has narrow appeal and, accordingly, is worth about as much as everything else on a 486 sitting in someone's basement is worth.

The other product is investment scams, which have approximately the best product market fit of anything produced by humans. In no age, in no country, in no city, at no level of sophistication do people consistently say "Actually I would prefer not to get money for nothing."

This product needs the exchanges like they need oxygen, because the value of it is directly tied to having payment rails to move real currency into the ecosystem and some jurisdictional and regulatory legerdemain to stay one step ahead of the banhammer.
