Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick was reportedly a Trump supporter sick of the failures of the US’s ruling establishment of past presidents who barely addressed the many problems that affected the daily lives of ordinary American citizens whether they were black or white.

It’s ironic that this officer is now being hailed a hero by the very elite who failed him and countless other fellow Americans. It is also ironic that the common grievances shared by poor black & white US citizens that should have been directed at those in charge became polarised

Instead of being united in solidarity against the corruption on Capital Hill they became the tools of fascists like Donald Trump and white middle class ruling elites whose interests in maintaining wealth, power and the status quo at the political centre have spanned generations.

The lesson here is to beware of false narratives being written by the likes of Trumps, Bush’s, Clintons and the Bidens of this American dream that its citizens have and will prosper much better under their leadership. That is perhaps why it is just that, a very American dream!

If Republican leaders are actually interested in "unity" rather than using its rhetoric to avoid accountability, here's something they could do. It doesn't involve much in the way of consequences, but it does feature truth-telling, apologies and requests for reconciliation.

To be clear, I don't think any of this would actually happen, but it would be nice (if insufficient) if it did.

Ronna McDaniel, Mitch McConnell, Kevin McCarthy, Ted Cruz, and Josh Hawley could issue a joint statement and do a press conference in which they acknowledged that Joe Biden is president-elect and that he won a free and fair election by a sizable margin.

They could say that there is no evidence of meaningful election fraud and that judges, including ones appointed by Trump, have rejected much of what the president and his allies have been complaining about.

They could apologize for misleading their supporters over the past months and say that they understand why Democrats may think their claims fueled last week's violence and are horrified if that is the case.

Man, I remember when I first started reporting on the Proud Boys and their founder, Gavin McInnes. One major form of pushback I got was, “ Why are you wasting your time on these nobodies?”

This is why.

At the time, the Proud Boys got a lot of credulous coverage from mainstream outlets that passed McInnes off as a "provocateur," as if this was all about having a little fun at the expense of the "politically correct". McInnes's claims not to be racist were taken at face value.

McInnes understood that if he forefronted his group's sexism and told reporters the group was about reclaiming manhood and putting women back in the kitchen, that would successfully conceal the racism of the Proud Boys. Most reporters don't understand the two are linked.

Moreover, mainstream media continues to treat misogyny as a harmless peccadillo, just a matter of being "old-fashioned". (Anti-choicers have benefitted from this for a long time, as well.) This, even though misogyny is the root of most prejudice-driven violence in our country.

One in 5 women will be raped, and 1 in 4 will experience domestic violence. 3 women are murdered *a day* by partners or former partners. Misogyny is violent and deadly, but if a group portrays itself as proudly sexist, they get to pretend it's just "Leave It To Beaver" longings.

This impeachment is nothing more than a partisan exercise designed to further divide the country. Democrats claim to want unify the country but impeaching a former president, a private citizen, is the antithesis of unity.

Democrats brazenly appointing a pro impeachment democrat to preside over the trial is not fair or impartial and hardly indicates any kind of unity for the country.

No, unity is the opposite of this travesty we are about to witness.
