shouto wishes he could catch a break. his body is heavy, weighed down by stress and exhaustion and confusion. he hates the confusion the most.

he's sure that if he hadn't had the help he does from the very beginning, he'd have lost a long time ago.

shouto steps out of his office. he's the last to leave tonight, though that's no surprise. he's usually one of the lastest working heroes in the agency.

he'd been hoping to get back to his apartment without a hitch, but he can tell that won't be the case. not tonight.

not when it feels like someone's watching his every move.

he continues walking for a beat, stepping out of view of his agency. he reaches a fire escape stairwell against the side of another building and climbs to the top, quiet as he can.

shouto could use his ice to get up,

but keeping inconspicuous is more important than speed.

he settles on the edge of the building, legs relishing in the pull of gravity for but a moment.

"shadow," shouto says aloud then, unsurprised.

when he blinks, the vigilante stands beside him, usual dark get-up donned, though this time he doesn't have his mask and hood pulled up. he looks... normal. if anything, that feels stranger than seeing nothing but the man's green eyes.
Last night @allthecitizens found a 1/3rd billion gov contract won by a company linked to Conservative donor Lord Ashcroft.

£350m Covid19 award goes to company run by Impellam, where former Tory treasurer has ‘significant interest’. THREAD:

Recruitment firm Medacs Healthcare won the 17 Dec contract to “support medical and clinical services in laboratories” & assist “national testing programme in response to Covid-19”. It’s the 3rd largest Covid-related single award seen by @allthecitizens
https://t.co/WjCQXuhTfA

Medacs Healthcare is part of the Medacs Global Group, owned by parent company ‘Impellam Group’. Impellam’s main shareholder & Chairman is Conservative donor Michael Ashcroft. He’s donated £176,104 to the Tories since the pandemic began and £851,029 since 2001.

Lord Ashcroft is listed as having ‘significant influence’ over Impellam. In addition, 56% is owned by the Lombard Trust. In 2010, Ashcroft transferred the 26m shares he held in Impellam to the Lombard Trust; the beneficiaries are his children. https://t.co/Z8gcdRpwKz

Medacs Healthcare is majority owned by Medacs Global Group, which is majority owned by Impellam Group. Medacs Healthcare has also won other Covid contracts: £357,830 on 2 smaller awards to supply temporary health personnel and also was part of two large group contracts.
This column by @jackmintz raises some concerns as a potential policy response to the expected cancellation of the KXL permit.

1/

First, Dr Mintz cites numbers for direct and indirect jobs created by KXL for both Canada and USA. It isn’t clear where these numbers came from or if they are permanent jobs. Methods for calculating induced jobs are notorious for their unreliable and non-robust methodology.

2/

Second, Dr Mintz proposes that Canada retaliate with duties and other trade restrictions, as what happened with aluminum. However, KXL is very different, and this changes the scope of available responses, especially under our trade agreements.

3/

Canada viewed the US duties on aluminum and steel as violating trade agreements. The retaliatory duties were permitted under those agreements as a response to those violations. They are not permitted in response to cancelling KXL.

4/

It is also somewhat odd to see an economist arguing for a trade war in any event, especially one tat would be initiated by a small, trade-exposed economy against a much larger economy. No one wins in a trade war.

Hi @derbyspolice @DerbysPCC @EHRC @EHRCChair @KishwerFalkner @RJHilsenrath @trussliz @GEOgovuk

The Equal Ops Monitoring section in your job application asks for the 'Sex (Gender)' of the applicant with options:

Male
Female.

1/12

'Gender' is not a protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010 and is not defined in the Act.

https://t.co/qisFhCiV1u

2/12

Sex is the protected characteristic and the only two possible options for sex are 'Female' and 'Male' as defined in the Act and consistent with biology.

https://t.co/CEJ0gkr6nF

'Gender' is not a synonym for sex.

3/12

You also ask about 'transgender'.

'Transgender' is not a protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010 and is not defined in the Act.

4/12

There is a protected characteristic of 'gender reassignment', but the term 'transgender' is not used or defined in the Act.

I was wrong. He left. I own it. Now I'll keep my word. I can't say that I regret it. It's appropriate.

The fact that I was wrong that Trump would engineer a way to stay in the WH, & potentially wrong about an opinion I never vocalized, doesn't change what I laid out all yr 1/

And that's this: Trump was a Trojan Horse. Trump herded & set up & sold out the Christians in this country who were too blinded by the cult of personality that he and his fake enemies engineered. He pretended to be fiscally conservative, then destroyed us with warp speed. 2/

He pretended to be pro 2 Am, as he encouraged red flag laws & bump stock bans. He pushed 5G, ignored chem trails, & intentionally & obviously sabotaged his own litigation re things like "DACA," he pretended like a wall he knew he could never build was the only way to stop 3/

illegal immigration, he pretended to want to stop child trafficking, & then prosecuted far less of those crimes than even Obama, he claimed to fight ISIS while moving troops just far enough back in Syria to allow Turkey to invade ... & free ISIS, & then assassinated the only 4/

guy who actually was fighting ISIS, he shut down the country for a wall he can't build bc 67% of the border is private property, but never over TRILLIONS of dollars in socialist pork or Planned Parenthood funding, he pretended to fight through tweets, rally comedy tours, & 5/
Some quick thoughts on what we just saw

Firstly hardly a unique insight but hard to overstimate the difference between the two last inaugurals. America has meandered sharply along its political arc.

Biden's rhetoric reached high. Every sentence seemed purposefully...

...constructed to negate every political and personal characteristic of his predecessor.

And insofar as he's not Trump, that he does accept, cherish and understand democratic norms, institutions and conventions in a way that Trump never could, Biden will make a real difference.

He will change the tone and tenor of politics, not only in America but across the West. As I've said before, just replacing Trump is a substantial victory for him and will earn him praise from historians.

But that aura will disappear quickly. A governing project it will not make

But how much praise he receives and stature conferred by posterity will depend on what happens next.

Because the big overarching question for me, watching this, is which of those two inaugurals, Trump or Biden's, is going to seem unusual in the future.

The relief that many are feeling is predicated on a type of politics ending. But it is at least as possible that it is Biden ..not Trump who is the last gasp of something. Is it Trump who is the dying embers of a dying, increasingly powerless old white America...

Think about the future, the long term, never short
So this is a subject that fascinates me for one reason.

Authoritarians (both followers and leaders) tend to see their leaders as god-like figures, and if you cut off the head, the body follows.

This is why they try to find "leftist leaders".

Most of this is drawn from one of my favorite books on the subject, The Authoritarians, by Bob Altemeyer.

You can find it

The thing about authoritarian followers, is that they don't ask why. They don't question. They don't get suspicious. They don't suspect ulterior motives. When someone tells them what they wanna hear, they buy it, hook, line, and sinker... and they assume everyone else does too.

Therefor, they assume others do this too, and they try to poke holes in their opponents arguments. They think that if they catch, say, Hillary Clinton lying, then her "followers" will leave her.

Under the assumption that they aren't already aware she probably is lying at times.

They don't understand how a decentralized movement works, they don't understand how to be properly critical of politicians you vote for, and they see this as one giant political game of King of the Mountain.

Just shove people off and you win.
This was exactly what I was about to write a thread warning about.

A change in leadership in the US at the executive level does not alter the Republican Senators and Congress representatives. A few of whom are implicated in January 6, 2020 insurrection.

There will be a strong urge to forget the danger and the corruption.

After a long period of extended fear, terror and daily assaults on political and social norms, many will want to forget and move forward.

But we cannot take our eyes off those out to dismantle democracy.

Those breathing a sigh of relief, tomorrow this all resumes again in the US. It’s only temporarily paused in the US and correspondingly in Canada.

The urge to move on is strong. Resist it. Celebrate victories and achievements, but DO NOT walk away and forget.

Canadian conservative politicians are tightly connected to many of the Republican traitors who attacked the Capitol Jan 6.

None of them are going to give up. They’ll regroup. They’ll reorganize.

In the mean time, we are all required to stay alert. There is much to do.

The far right has let their agenda be known. They want to end democracy in US and in Canada. That goal is not off the table.

They will continue to pursue this agenda.
