I've a few thoughts about Trump and how we got here, going to be a long thread

I've just finished @Mikel_Jollett excellent book Hollywood Park, can't recommend it highly enough (and his band album etc) In the book he describes growing up with a Narcissistic mother amongst other things.

When he describes how every single thing that happens was through the prism of how it effected her and how it made her feel reminded me of Trump. To start with Trump is deeply disturbed individual, he was brought up as a racist.

He's risen to power by the use of racism however I don't think that's why he's become what he is. He's exploited institutional racism to help himself feel better about himself.
I see institutional racism as a result of an exploitation of power.

The fact that some people have a genetic predisposition to higher level of pigmentation in their skin can never be a logical reason for bias. Due to the historical imbalance of power it is exploited to consolidate power and with it riches.

Surprised in this otherwise excellent obit of legendary journalist Neil Sheehan, the @nytimes didn't mention that the Nixon admin tried to charge Sheehan and his wife Susan under the Espionage Act *after* the Pentagon Papers Supreme Court case.

The Pentagon Papers Supreme Court ruling is, of course, a landmark First Amendment opinion. But it's bizarre to me that the Nixon admin actually tried to *criminally charge* Sheehan for his reporting, and the case is almost lost to history.

One of the only descriptions of the Espionage Act grand jury investigation into Neil Sheehan, besides in the @nytimes archives, is this 2011 @DailyBeast piece by former NYT general counsel James Goodale. It is an absolutely remarkable story.

After Nixon lost the Pentagon Papers Supreme Court case, he was enraged and still wanted the NYT prosecuted. While @DanielEllsberg's grand jury was happening in LA, federal prosecutors opened up an investigation into Sheehan in Boston for "conspiracy to violate the Espionage Act"

The grand jury investigating both Sheehan and his wife Susan, who was a writer at the @NewYorker, subpoenaed several famous journalists and academics, including David Halberstam, Noam Chomsky, and Howard Zinn.

And it had been several years since, but I couldn't really shake the instinct to print all the speeches and debates and take my trusty red and black pens to them.

It is clear that a consequential portion of Republican elected officials hold a particular view of America which only benefits “their kind of people.”

It is a vision so anti-democratic that secure it through exercise of raw, brutal power.

So what is to be done...

Unequivocally and boot these opponents of liberty out of the Republican party or start a new one.

Accept the repentant, but don’t waste time trying to persuade the obtuse, arrogant and violent.

Remember who caved and never, ever, ever vote a Trump lackey into office again.

Make repair for the damage the party has wrought.

Extend and protect voting rights for all. Act in true democratic fashion and listen to the will of the majority.

Aggressively enact policies to disrupt white supremacist extremist activity. Disassociate from racists.

Do a deep and thorough accounting of your authoritarian, patriarchal, white supremacist history and remove from pedestals those who, covered their dehumanizing tactics under the guise of “conservatism.”

Look to your religious institutions and divorce from them any notions that the Republican Party is God’s party and that the USA is God’s favored nation.

Glean wisdom from faith communities comprised of marginalized people groups. Smash the idol of Christian Nationalism.

This is not a blackpill. This is simply rigor. @llinwood

The “ebb and flow” analogy of the 2020 Presidential election. On election night we all knew the red title wave came in (flow). In that moment, we felt all the hard work, prayers and faith paid off. Only to be disappointed as the wave went out (ebb).

By its campaign and conduct of the 2020 election, the ruling class ceased pretending to be part of a constitutional republic. By treating fellow Americans as inferiors through word and deed, its members renounced their common citizenship with us.

Eschewing persuasion, they set about compelling obedience to an openly manipulated election.

Thus did they burn their bridges to the rest of America as surely as did Cortéz when he burned the ships that had carried his troops to conquer the Aztec empire.

Henceforth, they must rule or ruin as the oligarchy they have become.

For four decades beginning in the mid-1960s, a class of rulers grew in America. They became ever more uniform socially and intellectually, ever more opposed to the rest of Americans, and ever more powerful.

This happened as government took upon itself the tasks of eliminating poverty and harmonizing the races, and as it controlled ever greater shares of the national income.

I think there is more than enough evidence now that had the mob reached Congress members of Congress would have been either harmed, held hostage, or killed. Let's keep that in mind as folks try to frame this as speech.

Sometimes you don't know what someone is really arguing until it's followed by action. If someone says "Pelosi should pay the price for treason" are they saying people should make that happen or saying a judicial process should be launched.

On the other hand, this is a group of people, a movement, that spent a couple weeks on Facebook saying Mike Pence would pay the price for treason on January 6, said at the event they wanted to find and hang him, then broke into the building with rope.

So we know what this means. And we know what it meant. And honestly given the history f the folks involved we could have told you before.

The point is that history matters. Certain comments from certain groups merit special treatment because those comments and those groups have a history of violence associated with them.

Many leftists have grown disenchanted with D*A based on their experiences.

Every chapter is different,so the intention of this thread isn't to target any one specific chapter, or to generalize. It is to elucidate on REAL, counter-revolutionary issues within the org.

#1: D*A still has anti-communist bylaws nationally, that could result in those of us who are further left than "social democrat" to be expelled from membership. In spite continous pleas to have the bylaw stricken, national has not done

#2: D*A constantly asks membership to water down policies that are BASIC NEEDS for survival moving forward, literally for the comfort of liberals/moderates.

Many leftists believe that anyone who asks you to water down your basic needs is not your ally.

#3: D*A has a long & documented history of ignoring abuse within their organizing spaces, and for not holding abusers accountable.
They mishandle disclosure of abuse (for accused & accuser) frequently enough, that many ppl leave the DSA over abuse & never return.
