At this point, the countries with most genomic data to analyze spread of the variant virus belonging to https://t.co/ImaHU6Jxdv B.1.1.7 lineage or @nextstrain clade 20I/501Y.V1 are the UK, Denmark and the USA. Here I compare growth rates of B.1.17 across these countries. 1/13

 Working from @GISAID data, the UK has 18776 genomes, Denmark has 6089 genomes and the USA has 3093 genomes from specimens collected after Dec 15, 2020. Here, I'm looking at daily genomes with collection dates up to Jan 6 that were not pre-screened by "S dropout". 2/13
For the UK, we can see a steady increase in the frequency of sequenced variant viruses belonging to the B.1.1.7 lineage, reaching ~70% frequency at the end of December. Solid line is a 7 day sliding window average. 3/13
We can fit a logistic growth model to the frequency of B.1.1.7 in the UK data to estimate the rate of frequency increase through time. 4/13
And following @erikmvolz et al (https://t.co/l2ElhJVk8b) we can convert from a measured frequency growth rate to an estimate of increased transmissibility by assuming a particular generation time, which I take to be between 5 days and 6.5 days. 5/13
Doing so gives the following result where the observed saturation of variant frequency is well matched by the logistic growth model with an estimate of logistic growth rate of B.1.1.7 of 0.08 per day corresponding to an increase in transmission rate of 40-52%. 6/13
This result fits with more rigorous modeling studies by Vöhringer et al (https://t.co/i2vY5tp9f9) and @_nickdavies et al (https://t.co/gStjq57mQD), and the 30-50% increase in transmission is supported by secondary attack rate estimates from @PHE_uk (https://t.co/v9WzAaxEC2). 7/13
We can do a similar analysis of genomic data from Denmark where we see an increase in B.1.1.7 frequency to ~3% over the course of December. Sparser bars are due to Denmark releasing specimen collection dates by week rather than by day. 8/13
Using the same logistic growth model, we get a logistic growth rate of B.1.1.7 of 0.07 per day in Denmark corresponding to an increase in transmission rate of 34-44%. 9/13
At the end of December the US frequency of B.1.1.7 was approximately ~1%. Recent samples used in this estimate are largely from New York, California, Wisconsin, Wyoming, Maryland and New Mexico. 10/13
The logistic growth model gives a logistic growth rate of B.1.1.7 of 0.08 per day in the US which corresponds to an increase in transmission rate of 42-55% although this estimate is noisy at this point. 11/13
Similar rates of frequency growth of lineage B.1.1.7 in different geographic contexts support biological increase in transmission rate of the 501Y.V1 variant. 12/13

There's been a lot of talk about the missionary killed by the natives of North Sentinel Island. They're probably so aggressive because of this weirdo, Maurice Vidal Portman. So here's a big thread about this creep and some facts from my decade-long obsession with the island.


The Sentinelese are often described as “uncontacted,” but this not strictly true. They had a very significant contact in 1880 with Commander Portman.

Portman, the black sheep third son of some minor noble, was assigned by the English Royal Navy to administer and pacify the Andaman Islands, a job he pursued from 1880-1900 with the full measure of his own perversity.

I had the most bizarre experience outside of a bar yesterday, which my partner very aptly described as "toxic mask-unlinity." (A Thread.)

I was standing outside, waiting for a lyft to get home, when two cis men came out of the bar to smoke cigarettes. They're discussing the masks that folks are wearing in California at the moment because of the very dangerous air pollution from the fires happening.

I happen to be wearing one of those masks, because I think lungs are important and I like breathing. I dunno. One of the men notices me standing there, and says, "Like this f*cker right here. What is this shit?"

He goes on a homophobic rant about me, the pansy with a mask, and what a Very Manly Man he is because he's not afraid to smoke a pack of cigarettes while California is on fire. He doesn't need a mask, because something-something-heterosexual-something.

And part of me is just... impressed by the fact that this dude thinks he's Owning The Gay Libs by not wearing a mask to protect his lungs from smoke and particles in the air that are literally DANGEROUS... while chain-smoking. Outside of a bar.

Seen here is Mrs Gulshan Feradoon Cooper, Head Librarian for over forty years at The People's Free Reading Room in Dhobitalao. “I am not at all strict, that’s my only drawback,” she said. (She doesn't charge a fine).


“I prefer research libraries because I don’t like novels, I like history," said Sarita Shekar Gandhi, Head Librarian at KR Cama Oriental Institute. Over her years at the library she has devoted herself to understanding the nuances of Zoroastrian studies.


Bidisha Basu co-started @leapingwindows , a library and café for comic books, graphic novels and manga. “You get people who have never read a comic before and that’s the most interesting part of the job. It’s exciting to introduce them to comics," she said.


“A librarian should not only love books, she should also love people," said Arati Desai the Head Librarian at the immaculate Nehru Centre Library in Worli. "I've even swept and swabbed my library, there's dignity in everything that you do at work," she goes on to say.

We finally have the U.S. Citizenship Act Bill Text! I'm going to go through some portions of the bill right now and highlight some of the major changes and improvements that it would make to our immigration system.

First the Bill makes a series of promises changes to the way we talk about immigrants and immigration law.

Gone would be the term "alien" and in its place is "noncitizen."

Also gone would be the term "alienage," replaced with "noncitizenship."


Now we get to the "earned path to citizenship" for all undocumented immigrants present in the United States on January 1, 2021.

Under this bill, anyone who satisfies the eligibility criteria for a new "lawful prospective immigrant status" can come out of the shadows.


So, what are the eligibility criteria for becoming a "lawful prospective immigrant status"? Those are in a new INA 245G and include:

- Payment of the appropriate fees
- Continuous presence after January 1, 2021
- Not having certain criminal record (but there's a waiver)


After a person has been in "lawful prospective immigrant status" for at least 5 years, they can apply for a green card, so long as they still pass background checks and have paid back any taxes they are required to do so by law.

However! Some groups don't have to wait 5 years.

1/ So here is a thread on how I turned $32,000 into $1.2m and back to pretty much zero (once taxes are paid).

Just note, I am not bitter or salty in any way at all, the last 2 years have been an amazing ride - travelled the world, been wealthy, been poor.

2/ Dec '16, my advertising agency folded, I had a little bit of money left and I put $32k into Bitcoin and Ether. As it started to go up I diversified into everything, Monero, Dash, this that, any crap - even Ripplecoin. Everything just kept going up.

3/ By March I think I had around $300k and $500k by the summer. I used to take 25% out but towards the end of the summer I got greedy and put it all back in and by December it was $1.2m.

The Straddle is my favorite trade these days. But more often than not, one needs to adjust to make a good return from it. There are many ways to do this depending on your view, psychology and imagination. Will discuss a few that I use

The Straddle is a delta neutral strategy and it is important to keep deltas in check during the course of the Trade and not let them run away from you. Of course Volatility is the elephant in the room- but not going there as that will require a separate discussion

The first and most common method is to go 'inverted.' That is to say to shift the untested side to generate additional Premium and increase the runway to Breakeven. So if you start with a Straddle at 700 and price goes to 740, you can move the PE up to say 720.

How much should you move the untested side? While again this is a matter of skill, experience and artistry, the rule of thumb is to cut deltas by half. Remember, prices will move and you have to allow sufficient room for them to fluctuate

The second method is to shift the entire Straddle in the direction of the move. So if you have a 700 Straddle and Price goes to 740, you can shift the Straddle to 720. If you time this right, it can generally be done at virtually no cost or minimal cost.

3. This ancient church in the village of Nij (or Nic), just south of the Caucasus Mountains, belongs to the Udi people, a Christian minority in Azerbaijan descended from the area’s pre-Turkic Caucasian Albanians. 🇦🇿


4. Nearby are the ruins of the Caucasian Albanian capital of “old” Gabala (Qebele), where I was given a personal tour by one of the resident archeologists (just for showing up). 🇦🇿


5. Only a very tiny portion of the extensive site has been excavated. “Every place you dig,” the archeologist told me, “you will find artifacts.” This whole field is a city waiting to be uncovered.
