#HS2 locks #TreeProtectors šŸŒ³in tunnels. The latest tactic employed by NET bailiffs is to install locked & barricaded doors within the tunnels beneath Euston Square Gardens, trapping those inside with no fire exit. Have they forgotten the Bradford City stadium fire?

 Yesterday, one such barricaded door was installed by #HS2 a few metres into the tunnel known as 'Kelvin' & earlier today, another was screwed in & locked shut over the mouth of the tunnel known as 'Crystal'. This is a picture of it.
At around 8am on Thursday 11 February a #HS2 bailiff known as Dan entered Kelvin & wedged a door in place a few metres into the tunnel. He used a wooden brace to tightly secure it in place, preventing any outward passage by the occupants.
Over the course of the day, there followed an epic struggle between Desperate Dan the big bailiff and Blue, our brave nature defender, for possession of these few metres of tunnel leading to the downshaft, with Blue ultimately prevailing. #GoBlue #StopHS2
Battle commenced when Desperate Dan attempted to swap in a new door for the one originally installed. It is thought that the new door was one which could be screwed in and locked, rather than wedged & barricaded, much like the one now over the mouth of Crystal.
Blue reacted quickly to the removal of the first makeshift door, managing to re-enter that section of the tunnel & prevent the installation of the more solid replacement door.
Over the next several hours, Blue the nature defender & Desperate Dan the big bailiff were at uncomfortably close quarters, with Blue very gradually able to progressively inch forward and inch Dan backwards out of the tunnel.
At around 4.30pm, Dan, having had his body entirely inside an extremely narrow section of the #Treerotector's tunnel, which #HS2 have yet to begin enlarging or shoring up to their own safety standards, for over 8 hours, tried to switch out, with another bailiff taking his place
Again the dauntless and ever vigilant tree protector Blue reacted immediately to this opportunity, recapturing the entire length of the tunnel and precious access to the downshaft, with its daylight and phone signal, on behalf of the #StopHS2 #HS2Rebellion Nature Defenders.
There followed an unpleasant and tense episode in which several bailiffs grabbed hold of young #TreeProtector Blue & attempted to drag her out of the tunnel,despite her being locked on inside Kelvin by a tight metal ankle bracelet & chain,causing her discomfort, distress & pain
Thankfully, once the bailiffs became fully convinced that she was indeed attached in this manner, that removing her was impossible & that continuing to try could cause her serious and clearly avoidable injury, they relented.
The #StopHS2 #TreeProtectors inside Kelvin once again have access to the downshaft & are free for interviews, although for how much longer is anybody's guess. Having been thwarted from sealing in the occupants of Kelvin, the bailiffs next move was to the occupants of Crystal
At about 2pm today, #HS2 operatives fixed a door to the mouth of the tunnel & locked this closed. In defiance of the claustrophobia which most people might imagine this would cause, the intrepid #Scotty nonchalantly commented on social media: "We seem to have a new front door"
About half an hour after the original notification to journalists of what had happened, outlined above, the door over Crystal was removed. Our sincere thanks šŸ™ to the journalists who saw fit to ask #HS2 about it during this time. #HS2Rebellion
However, it appears people aren't the only ones #HS2 have been trapping. Failure to adequately check, maintain or provide an escape route (or ā€˜mammal ladder') from their newt traps in Buckinghamshire, as required by law, are resulting in the deaths of other protected species ....
by starvation & by freezing to death in these traps. This apparent breach of #HS2's operational license, the 1981 Wildlife & Countryside Act, & the Animal Welfare Act 2006 is now being investigated by Natural England.....
Ecological consultant on protected species Rob Mileto comments: "If #HS2 are found to be in breach of their organisational licence, then the appropriate action would be to revoke that licence ā€“ itā€™s akin to being found guilty of drink-driving, you lose your driving licence....ā€

So, I want to talk about how sexual harassment and fair pay are linked at Google (and beyond), because I think that's an angle that isn't being highlighted enough in the coverage of these walk-outs. I'm going to frame it largely around my personal experience there. Thread.

When I was sexually harassed by the director of the area I was working in, I was afraid to report it because I was worried that "getting him in trouble" would result in the subtle retaliation of missed leadership opportunities.

I wanted to continue working on the team I was on, because I'd gained a lot of very deep knowledge and expertise in that area, as well as reputation and camaraderie with the other folks working in that area. I didn't want to make the situation more "difficult."

To get promoted at Google, several need to happen: 1. you need opportunities for ownership and leadership above your current level (basically, opportunities to show you're working at the next level you're trying to get promoted to). The work you're "assigned" has a big impact.

2. You need glowing reviews from peers, *at or particularly above the level you're hoping to get promoted to.* Basically, you need people a lot more senior than you to say you're doing awesome work.

1/ The ā€œI Have a Dream" speech is one of the most extraordinary speeches in American history. You should read it again. First, a few thoughts about the common American heritage Dr. King relied upon in calling Americans to rededicate themselves to the unfinished work of freedom.


2/ Dr. King delivered his speech in what he called the ā€œhallowed spotā€ of the Lincoln memorial. More than a picturesque backdrop, King relied on Americaā€™s reverence for Lincoln and the common celebration of Lincolnā€™s words and acts, especially the Emancipation Proclamation.


3/ ā€œFive score years agoā€¦ā€ King echoes the words of the Gettysburg Address. Like Lincoln, King invokes the Declaration of Independence and the fundamental principles of American freedom, ā€œlife, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.ā€ Every person in that crowd knew these words.


4/ The Declaration, Constitution and Emancipation Proclamation declared and established the fundamental American principles of freedom that all Americans knew and believed in. But these principles and promises remained unfulfilled for black Americans.


5/ Lincolnā€™s audience knew the history of slavery and many had suffered personal loss in the ongoing war. Dr. Kingā€™s audience knew the history of violent racism, segregation, and unequal economic opportunity. The Proclamation freed the slaves, ā€œbut the Negro still is not free.ā€

Oh are we talking about Sheryl Sandberg again? Well, your reminder that disabled feminists, LGBQT feminists, and feminists of color criticised her ā€˜lean inā€™ deal from day one. Donā€™t let anyone retcon that out of existence.

Like, a pretty narrow slice of feminists actually endorse and support corporate feminism, theyā€™re just white, nondisabled, straight, cis, and noisy so their voices have a bigger reach.

So if your impression is that ā€˜feminismā€™ gave her a ā€˜free passā€™ maybe you should question your overall impression of feminism rather than continuing to centre a handful of people as ā€˜thought leadersā€™ or whatever.

Critics within feminism have been doing this work for a long time and have been getting shat on it for about as long and I'm tired of seeing them erased. But what do I know ā€”Ā I am, after all, not a feminist.

But I WILL say, from my not-a-feminist perspective, that people who arenā€™t feminists who are criticising feminism should maybe understand the movement more deeply beyond a handful of high profile celebrity feminists.

Two things can be true at once:
1. There is an issue with hostility some academics have faced on some issues
2. Another academic who himself uses threats of legal action to bully colleagues into silence is not a good faith champion of the free speech cause


I have kept quiet about Matthew's recent outpourings on here but as my estwhile co-author has now seen fit to portray me as an enabler of oppression I think I have a right to reply. So I will.

I consider Matthew to be a colleague and a friend, and we had a longstanding agreement not to engage in disputes on twitter. I disagree with much in the article @UOzkirimli wrote on his research in @openDemocracy but I strongly support his right to express such critical views

I therefore find it outrageous that Matthew saw fit to bully @openDemocracy with legal threats, seeking it seems to stifle criticism of his own work. Such behaviour is simply wrong, and completely inconsistent with an academic commitment to free speech.

I am not embroiling myself in the various other cases Matt lists because, unlike him, I think attention to the detail matters and I don't have time to research each of these cases in detail.

In spite of being the owner of a large Zamindari (estate), she had to depend on the stipend of the government in the later part of her life. The amount of this stipend gradually decreased and became Rs. 1000/- only in the end.
