Last night I got talking to my aunt. A staunch Republican, ex prisoner of conscience, ex dirty protester in armagh jail. We've not seen eye on eye on trans issues and fall out on a regular basis.
Last week I sent her #TheLetter and asked her to read it and to call of and she 1

Was ready to discuss it. She called me last night. An amnesty supporter and donor (she had amnesty put in her will years ago). And she was in tears. She'd read up, she'd read all of #Cxlms tweets on the matter and read feminist accounts here on Twitter and on other forums. 2
She couldn't believe that the people who say they are supporters of all freedoms and human rights where demanding the disenfranchisement of women all over Ireland. She couldn't believe limerick women's jail houses 2 fully intact male sex offenders. She couldn't believe what had 3
Been done to #KieraBell and 1000s like her. She couldn't believe the rampant misogny in 2020s Ireland. She likened it to the grasp the church had on Ireland until recently. She recalled the time male prison guards were called in from the maze to brutalise and intimidate the 4
Women in Armagh. She recalled her injuries which still plague her to this day. The PTSD she has from those men being present in an all female space. She cried for the women in limerick prison as she knows what they are going through. She cried for the children mutilated in the 5
Name of "a new progressive Ireland" and likened their suffering to the laundries and what was done to young girls and babies there. She cried, screamed and ranted for over 3 hours with me. She is a feminist. She's was disgusted at the letter signed by amnesty and the NWCI 6
And even more disgusted at a letter written by a man during the #repeal campaign where he claimed to speak for women against the "British imperialism" he never faced nor knew. She is disgusted as a woman, ex POW, feminist and activist. She has one message for Irish women today 7
#WeWillBeHeard she says is her new battle cry. And believe me, she will be heard.

And she changed her will this morning. Amnesty won't get another penny from her.

Onwards and upwards sisters. Our voice is being heard.

@Colmogorman #ReadTheThread
Can a man please ask @Colmogorman to read the thread because apparently he only answers men and their viewpoints.

He retweeted a 70 year old AGP man's thread last night and is ignoring the thread of a 68 year old ex POW woman.

This is a pretty valiant attempt to defend the "Feminist Glaciology" article, which says conventional wisdom is wrong, and this is a solid piece of scholarship. I'll beg to differ, because I think Jeffery, here, is confusing scholarship with "saying things that seem right".

The article is, at heart, deeply weird, even essentialist. Here, for example, is the claim that proposing climate engineering is a "man" thing. Also a "man" thing: attempting to get distance from a topic, approaching it in a disinterested fashion.

Also a "man" thing—physical courage. (I guess, not quite: physical courage "co-constitutes" masculinist glaciology along with nationalism and colonialism.)

There's criticism of a New York Times article that talks about glaciology adventures, which makes a similar point.

At the heart of this chunk is the claim that glaciology excludes women because of a narrative of scientific objectivity and physical adventure. This is a strong claim! It's not enough to say, hey, sure, sounds good. Is it true?
