7/ But here's the thing. That 100% does not vote isn't a function of laziness but rather intentional, voter suppression. We are nonpartisan, but we would be burying our heads in the sand to pretend that one party hasn't been waging a decades-long campaign to make it harder

8/ for those we serve--women, immigrants, communities of color, domestic violence survivors, returning citizens, the poor and homeless--to vote. Voter ID laws, restricting early voting, the closing of polling places in these communities, challenging mail-in ballots: these

9/ are just some of the strategies the @GOP have used to disenfranchise the electoral. We have watched, outraged, as they have filed countless lawsuits this cycle to restrict the right to vote. For instance, they tried to have nearly 127K vote thrown out in TX because they voted

10/ via curbside voting. This is not due to a fear of voter fraud--voter fraud is extremely rare, and no one seriously believes it to be an issue. This was an attempt to nullify people who likely voted for the other party, full stop.. Story here: https://t.co/z9UdVjZi5J.

11/ all of this to say that, no matter today's outcome--and again, we are nonpartisan; we just want EVERYONE to vote--the work does not end. Let's talk about that work. First, we need a new voting rights act, named after our hero John Lewis: all this voter suppression needs to

12/ stop. It is a disgrace that so much effort has been put into making it this hard to vote, especially in a pandemic. Second, we need to overturn Citizens United and get big money out of politics. We are tired of billionaires and multinational corporations flooding our system

13/ with their lucre in order to advance their own interests. The billions spent on elections would be better spent on education, job training, affordable housing, public benefits. The only winners of this system are advertisers and the monied interests who game it for themselves

14/ We need immediate stimulus to stop the pandemic and begin to recover. And this recovery needs to be laser-focused on racial, gender, economic, and environmental justice: no more handouts to big business, no more tax breaks for the uber wealthy. It's time to invest in those

15/ who make this country run but who are all-too-often left out of the wealth they generate with their labor, their talents, and their sweat. Next, we need to reform the courts and look at abolishing the Electoral College. Too many vestiges of our slaveholding past continue to

16/ influence our lives. We need to reform the tax code to make the powerful pay their fair share: that @realDonaldTrump routinely paid no tax tells us everything we need to know about what's broken in America. All thee work we have to do will cost money, and taxes are how we pay

17/ for a just society. And then we need to address our horrifyingly unjust immigration system and finally deal with the existential threat of runaway climate change! Which brings us right back to why we are doing this thread: none of this happens if we don't vote for leaders

18/ that will be responsive to our needs. But again, it isn't enough to vote; once in office, we must hold elected officials accountable so that the policies they enact continue to further our mission and help us realize a more perfect union. This has been an exhausting election

19/ but we cannot rest. Once we know the results, and after taking some time to catch our breath, we must get right back to work, fighting for America, fighting for the planet, fighting for marginalized people around the world. We believe in Democracy, we believe in the power of

20/ of the people to change the world for the better--if we exercise that power. So, get out there and vote, get out there and engage in our great Democracy. We love all our brothers and sisters and will continue to fight alongside you. END
