Having a Ph.D. doesn’t make a person special, but it’s a gruelling years-long initiation many of us were never expected to survive and did so in spite of shitty, incurious white gatekeepers who kissed other white gatekeeper ass to get access that we kicked doors down to achieve.

My Ph.D. wasn’t about just me—it was about my family’s and mentors’ love and support. Every degree, promotion, accolade, etc., is theirs too. They’re proud; so am I. Social capital isn’t the same thing as worth, but we’ll take it for what it is and never mistake what it means.

We belong at all levels, at all the tables, with all the degrees and the honourifics. And we’ll keep earning them, and making space for more of our own. It isn’t the only work that matters, and the academy is brutal and corrosive, but so is every other structure and institution.

Degrees and titles aren’t who we are; we’re helped with perspective by our kin, our friends, and our communities. BIPOC folks questioning value of or complicities in pursuing a Ph.D.—that’s an important, complex, and nuanced discussion. But others had best tread carefully.

If patronizing bigots whinge that we “wrong” kind of people are sullying the elitist degrees, titles, and honours that were intended solely for their pale, male, and stale country club cliques, kindly address complaints to me, Dr. Justice, and my Ph.D. colleagues, at Screw U.

Having been in Amazon, Google, MS, the Google process is (was!) a clear outlier, which was totally culturally aligned with how everything else in the company worked.

1) Designed to fail closed
2) Detail over big picture
3) Written over relationship

1) "Fail closed" -- jargon for "optimised to say no by default".

Many processes in Google were like this, probably the largest other one being the hiring process. (Many Googlers hated the hiring process since they felt it said no to people who would 100% have been great hires...

...sometimes being burned to the extent of refusing to do any more interviewing.)

But the promotion process is (was) the same way - if the committee couldn't convince itself the case was watertight, it wouldn't promote.

This obviously led to a situation where a lot of cases were refused and meant a lot of heartache and unnecessary departures, but also a situation where by god if you'd MADE that bar, it was close to undeniable.

There was a very strong shared sense of what each level meant.

Some more so than others: I think L5/Senior is probably the one most folks have the largest degree of precision on, and above that it's harder to tell. But one benefit was that title/grade inflation was very strongly counteracted by "the system".

The 2018 State of JavaScript survey is out. They got 20,000 responses and have some delicious, delicious data. I'mma thread in some highlights:

First up: JavaScript flavors. There's TypeScript at 47% adoption, a tad higher than npm's own survey results (which said 46%). npm's survey is coming up again soon and will ask about TypeScript in a lot more detail.


I really, *really* like SoJ's "would not use again" question, which lets people who've abandoned a tech self-identify. This is noticeable in the graph above with Flow users -- 41% of people who've used Flow say they wouldn't use it again.

Now JavaScript frameworks. It's been a full year since npm's survey, so these numbers differ from ours in the directions I expected:
React 65% (vs. 60%)
Vue 29% (vs. 24%)
Ember 5% (vs 4%, I was expecting a bigger rise)

But there's a shocker in here: Angular.


npm's survey had Angular at 40% last year and SoJ has it at either:
- 58% (if you include those who don't want to use it again)
- 24% (if you count only those who like it)
Since npm's question didn't ask if they intend to *continue* using it I think that might explain this.

First thread of the year because I have time during MCO. As requested, a thread on the gods and spirits of Malay folk religion. Some are indigenous, some are of Indian origin, some have Islamic


Before I begin, it might be worth explaining the Malay conception of the spirit world. At its deepest level, Malay religious belief is animist. All living beings and even certain objects are said to have a soul. Natural phenomena are either controlled by or personified as spirits

Although these beings had to be respected, not all of them were powerful enough to be considered gods. Offerings would be made to the spirits that had greater influence on human life. Spells and incantations would invoke their


Two known examples of such elemental spirits that had god-like status are Raja Angin (king of the wind) and Mambang Tali Arus (spirit of river currents). There were undoubtedly many more which have been lost to time

Contact with ancient India brought the influence of Hinduism and Buddhism to SEA. What we now call Hinduism similarly developed in India out of native animism and the more formal Vedic tradition. This can be seen in the multitude of sacred animals and location-specific Hindu gods

RANI NAIKI DEVI AND THE BATTLE OF KASAHRADA

Mohammad Ghori, the young Ghurid Prince conquered Ghaznavids in Afghanistan in the year 1173 CE. He conducted some successful raids into the Indian territory, which even Mahmud Ghazni & the Persians couldn't do.


First&foremost,Ghori invaded states of Multan &Uch in India.After this he turned to southern states of Gujarat &Rajputana.Everybody knows this about Ghori,but what most pple r unaware of is the defeat he suffered at hands of Chalukyan Queen Naiki Devi in 1178 Battle of Kasahrada.


When he marched southwards, his first target was the prosperous fortified town of Anhilwara Patan.
It was the capital of Chalukyas(also known as Solankis of Gujarat) which was established by Vanraj of Chapotkata Dynasty in 8th century.


American historian Tertius Chandler states that it was the 10th largest city in the world at that time. The history of Chalukyas has been written by many historians, but the valour of the Great Queen Naiki Devi remains unsung.


Born to the Kadamba King Paramardin of Goa,Naiki Devi was well trained in sword fighting, horse riding, strategy & every other subject of Statesmanship. She was married to King Ajaypala of Gujarat who sat on throne in 1171CE. Unfortunately,the King died within 4 yrs of his rule.
