This is a must-read article by @mlipsitch and @kesvelt and I strongly agree with the central points: we urgently need to step up genomic surveillance & get transmission down now in the US while these are rare.
But a couple things to expand on from a virology point of view.
The piece talks about the B117 variant as if itâs not SARS-CoV-2, but it is. B117 is distinguished by 23 changes across the genome, but itâs still fundamentally the same virus. Itâs a different variant (some are calling it a strain depending on how thatâs defined).
But 23 nucleotide changes arenât sufficient to make this a completely different virus. So we are still fighting SARS-CoV-2. Just a new and improved version. Improved how? Well itâs more transmissible but the mechanism isnât yet known.
When viruses become more transmissible it can happen in a few different ways:
-virus can be more fit (replicate to higher titers, hence more shedding)
-virus can replicate more efficiently in specific tissues (like the nose)
-spike can bind the receptor more efficiently and...
...thus infect host cells more efficiently
-virus can get better at evading/antagonizing innate host antiviral defenses
-increased environmental stability
-people can shed virus for longer periods of time

The article and the accompanying thread from @kakape are well worth a read https://t.co/32c8l66eTV

BREAKING!!! \U0001f6a8\U0001f6a8\U0001f6a8 Rick from @TruNews claims to have intel that @realDonaldTrump WILL be issuing a Martial Law in MI, WI, PA, GA, and likely AZ as well and FULLY secure/lockdown ALL election facilities, and assets. Marines have already been recalled for duty. This is NOT a drill! pic.twitter.com/mEupUHYqof

The NRA is already trying to juice gun sales by creating fear around a new Biden administration. âStay vigilant and engagedâ sounds a lot like âshoot people who disagree with youâ to their supporters - too many of whom have been radicalized by the gun lobbyâs extremist agenda.
This NRA owns much of blame for the armed white supremacists trying to undermine American democracy: âThe gun-rights movement cleared the path for insurrection. It blew a hole in the rule of lawâand Donald Trumpâs would-be soldiers clamored through it.â
Many members of the mob that rioted inside the Capitol lead or belong to so-called âgun-rights groups,â and were motivated by the warnings of tyranny issued by the @NRA.
Guns are an integral part of anti-government and white supremacist violence. In 2017, a joint report from the FBI and DHS said âfirearms likely will continue to pose the greatest threat of lethal violence by [extremists] due to their availability and ease of use.â
Hereâs an example. In October 2018, Donald Trump claimed a âcaravanâ of migrants was heading to the US from Mexico. NRATV, then the propaganda arm of the NRA, claimed Jewish billionaire George Soros was conspiring with Venezuela to send migrants here to influence the election.
On Friday, Biden pledged to DEFEAT THE NRA.

Biden wants to ban our semi-auto rifles, tax our guns/mags & more. He knows the only thing standing in his way to DISMANTLE THE 2ND AMENDMENT is NRA.
Gun owners must stay vigilant & be engaged in elections and the legislative process.

The rejection by the UK court of the US Govt's request to extradite Julian Assange to stand trial on espionage charges is obviously great news. But the judge endorsed most of the USG's theories, but ultimately found the US prison system too inhumane to permit extradition.
The US DOJ has already said it intends to appeal. The question -- and I'm hearing different things on this -- is whether the courts will keep Assange imprisoned while that appeal is pending. The court ordered him released, but it's unclear if the DOJ appeal will keep him in jail.
This wasn't a victory for press freedom. Quite the contrary: the judge made clear she believed there are grounds to prosecute Assange in connection with the 2010 publication.
It was, instead, an indictment of the insanely oppressive US prison system for security "threats."
Ultimately, though, from a humanitarian *and* a political perspective, what matters most is that Assange be freed as soon as possible. The US Govt doesn't care what prison he's in, or why: they just want him silenced and in a cage.
He should be freed immediately.
The full ruling is at the link. Savor the last, sweet paragraph.
