Couple of things to clarify in case you don't know what these systems are

 Daniel mentions 2 different systems: EMCS used to register movements of excise goods (wine) and CHIEF for customs.

As excise products are subject to additional controls EMCS was used even when we were in the EU. And it still is now.

CHIEF is different, it's a customs systems. Reminder, as an EU member we didn't have customs borders with other EU states.

We've now introduced a new customs border so all movements to/from the EU need to be logged in CHIEF AS WELL AS other relevant systems.

CHIEF isn't easy to use. Kudos to Daniel for managing to input directly into it. The additional software helps but yes, there is a cost involved. Or you can pay the broker.

Part of that extra admin cost we've been warning about for the last 5 years

Another issue is that CHIEF will soon (ish) be replaced by CDS. A new version. So even if you learn how to deal with CHIEF now you'll soon need to re-learn on CDS.

And yes, you have to claim the reduced tariff under the UK-EU deal. That's normal.

It's because this reduced tariff is only available for goods that meet rules of origin - which you have to demonstrate.

All this, as well as the various codes and abbreviations you need to know to fill in a customs declaration, is totally normal. It's part of trading internationally. But that doesn't mean it's easy.

@DanielLambert29's company was well prepared for 1 Jan. They've obtained all the registrations, stockpiled. Done as much as any business could have under the circumstances.

But the natural consequence of having a new border is that things that used to be very simple, are now complex and require specialised knowledge. And are only possible provided that all the systems work and are updated.

This🧵is an excellent example of how insanely complicated all this is from a business perspective. How it adds to everyone's workload which has to translate into increased costs. For the company and for the consumer.

And again, the scary part is that this is an example of a company that's done well.

There are many businesses out there that are far, far behind and are yet to learn about all that.

12) Ethos Private Equity has won a contract with Ninety One to take on an advisory contract for Ninety One's Africa Private Equity funds.

Ninety One will maintain control and oversight of the portfolio, while Ethos will manage the assets

So I'd recommend reading this thread from Dave, but I thought about some of these policies, and how they fit into the whole, a lot, and want to offer a different interpretation.


I think California is world leading on progressivism that doesn't ask anyone to give anything up, or accept any major change, right now.

That's what I mean by symbolically progressive, operationally conservative.

Take the 100% renewable energy standard. As @leahstokes has written, these policies often fail in practice. I note our leadership on renewable energy in the piece, but the kind of politics we see on housing and transportation are going foil that if they don't change.

Creating a statewide consumer financial protection agency is great! But again, you're not asking most voters to give anything up or accept any actual changes.

I don't see that as balancing the scales on, say, high-speed rail.

CA is willing to vote for higher taxes, new agencies, etc. It was impressive when LA passed Measure H, a new sales tax to fund homeless shelters. And depressing to watch those same communities pour into the streets to protest shelters being placed near them. That's the rub.

Apologies for tweeting about European Land so much yesterday, but this article was a significant moment for us. For more than 3.5 years we have suffered enormously and this has mostly gone under the radar in the

2/ The Times article is the first recognition of the Reubens involvement in the cladding scandal. From the time we discovered we had ACM, European Land has refused to contribute a single penny towards the remediation. Even after their own intrusive survey showed that the missing

3/ fire breaks and flammable insulation they installed were AGAINST regulations, they still refused to contribute to fix their mistakes.

4/ To make things worse, their aggressive behaviour meant they issued S20 notices against leaseholders and started billing us for millions from as early as 2018 (two years before any remediation works had even started). They then instructed their lawyers to take actions against

5/ against leaseholders and started proceedings against us if payments of £40,000-60,000 were not made within months. The stress and misery this caused us we will never forget or forgive.

Sthala Puranam says that, there lived a Landlord who had many cows in his farm. One among them was a Black Cow, which didn't give milk. Land lord observed that evening time, when all the cows came back after grazing, this cow used to go to a particular spot and gave all  the milk


by itself. He decided to dig the spot where the cow gave its milk

On digging a beautiful Vigraham of Murugan was found, but lower portion was very rough. So he called a great sculptor to soften it. Everyone was shocked to see that on the first chisel the vigraham bleeded.


Land lord realized that Murugan wanted the Vigraham the way it was.

Thus Prathishta was done on Chennimalai hill. It is believed that Sivalaya Chola got relieved from his Brahmahatti Dosha here. Kanda Shasti Kavacham was first offered here.

1/ Productivity tip: when I keep procrastinating on something I often trick myself by saying, "ok just work on it for the next 20 minutes" or some short period of time, "and then you can chill/relax guilt free" and give myself some treat (sugar, netflix, etc)

2/ Usually at the 20 minute mark (sometimes I set a timer) I'm so engrossed in what I'm doing that I don't want want to stop and end up working on it for the next hour or two. But getting started seems to be the hardest part.

3/ Key to this: you have to actually be ok with stopping after 20 minutes and being guilt free if that's how you feel. So it's not a trick, i have the option every time, I just often don't want to use it once i'm in the zone.
