 Overview:

1. QUIDAX (Cryptocurrency)

The first app I talked about is called Quidax (@QuidaxAfrica). It's an app I used to buy & sell crypto. and it's been quite swift as well when it comes to transactions.

I've received payments in form of BTC a lot just 'cos it saves time 💯
On @QuidaxAfrica, you can trade (buy/sell) quite a number of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. Ethereum, XRP, Dash, and Litecoin.

I also loved the fact that I got an email authentication for every single withdrawal, might take a second but it's basically more secure.

2. BARTER (Virtual US Cards)

It was one of my favourite apps. @getBarterApp gives you a virtual US Debit card, complete with a USA Address, tied to your name.
I use @getBarterApp to pay for online subscription services that don't allow our Nigerian cards. I use it for my Adobe, Apple subscription, and more stuff.

Keep in mind that it costs $2 to create a new card.

3. PIGGYVEST (High-interest Savings)

PiggyVest @PiggyBankNG needs almost no introduction at this point. When I asked about apps that worked for you, you recommended it a lot.

PiggyVest is an app I "highly" recommend for people who are serious about their finances and saving.
The Safelock feature on @PiggyBankNG helps you lock funds for a long period of time allowing you to stay true to a financial goal. You can keep adding to it and it can actually accumulate to a substantial sum.
Not only are you saving but, you're also earning a decent amount in interest, depending on how much you save.
It's one of the apps I use on an almost daily basis.

4. BAMBOO (Invest in US. Stocks from Nigeria)

One of the apps I really like using is the Bamboo app (@investbamboo)

It's a straightforward app, you can simply Buy/Sell shares of your favourite US company listed on the stock market, right here in Nigeria.
The @investbamboo app also has a large library and glossary if you want to read up and learn the basics or learn the ropes of buying your first stock, investing and everything in between.

Another app you can use to Invest in US stocks (even Nigerian stocks as well) is Trove @trovefinance

I love how the app displays categories, everything is easy to reach and they have a vast amount of assets as well (now including Cryptocurrency)

5. RUBIES (100% Digital Bank)

As the description reads, @rubies_ng is a full-on online bank.

You can do the everyday transactions you would normally do on your banking app and even more. You can request a card, creating a savings plan and become an independent banker.
I like that the transfer fees are just 10 Naira regardless, I also like that your phone number can also be your @rubies_ng account number.

All in all, it's a well-rounded app that I use and would recommend.

A THREAD on how most real estate folks structure deals with outside investors.

Most people utilize the "preferred equity" structure when they raise money from outside investors. They "syndicate" deals.

Here's the basics:

The person (or team of people) putting the deal together is the "sponsor". Also called general parter. Referred to on twitter as the GP.

They find the property, do all the work, hire the management company and take fees. They often co-sign debt and always secure the financing.

The investor is generally passive, doing no work and putting in cash. This is the "limited partner". Referred to on twitter as the LP.

They don't co-sign debt. They simply read reports and ask the sponsors questions and cash checks every month (if the deal is going well).

There are two equity classes.

"Preferred equity" belongs to the LPs. Cash talks, so this is a higher class of shares. They are first in the "capital stack" behind the debt (bank loan).

"Common equity" belongs to the sponsor. They are generally last in the capital stack.

Sponsors generally co-invest. That means they hold both equity classes. A 10% co-invest is standard.

That means the GP has skin in the game. His 10% co-invest makes him both an LP and a GP.

This context plays a role in how our cities and small towns are constructed, how they lead to the confinement and surveillance yabantu. Traditional beer brewing is identified as a threat because buy now mining bosses have identified that there's money to be made here.

It is hard to build a profitable internet business at scale in India, but not impossible. Let me talk about ixigo's FY2020 performance. But first, the back story (with @rajnishkumar)

It was 2016. We had 3 Million MAUs (mostly organic) and were getting closer to 20 crores annual revenue. We were trying to raise money because we had just 12 months of burn left in the bank.

Out of many conversations, I remember one with a VC in our office who asked us our CAC-LTV ratio. TBH, we didn't track it in those days because we always made money on the first transaction itself and didn't spend a lot on customer acquisition, but I remember the look we got !

Yet another one gave us advice - "Look it's been 10 years since launch, travel is done and dusted, why don't you guys try doing something else". We felt dejected for a bit but went back to work the next day - not the first or last time we would face rejections.

I met @shaileshlakhani (after many years) at an Unpluggd event in Bengaluru in early 2016, and we sat down to chat about ixigo. He was the first investor we met in a long time who saw us not for who we were but for who we could become.

2. Risk: how reliable is the $ you make

Enough has been written about #1. Here are 5 things you can do to tackle #2:

1/ All 5 of these tactics are a function of the same guiding principle:

Spend more time working ON the business, not IN the business.

Your job as CEO is to consistently:

- Identify opportunity
- Execute once
- Set process
- Delegate
- Fire yourself

With that said…

2/ Establish your focus

Most SMBs survive in the early days through 1-2 key customers.

If you do a good job, they'll give you more business.

That's the trap.

If it's not in your core focus, resist the urge.

If you don't you'll become a consulting firm for 1 customer.

3/ Eliminate Key Man Risk

SMBs are overly reliant on a small handful of individuals to run the operation.

Implication: Most knowledge about the business sits in the heads of a few people.

Take the time to develop strong Tier 2 management - this creates redundancy in the org

4/ Institute Operating Process

Strong Tier 2 management isn't good enough. You need knowledge to live in docs and systems, not just in brains.

Every dept should have a stand alone playbook.

An easy test: "how quickly can somebody that knows nothing about the dept. plug in?"
