Garlic (Kitunguu Saumu) Farming in Kenya.

A thread.

 Garlic farming has not been fully adopted by many farmers due to lack of sufficient information and a number of challenges.

However, it is one of the most precious horticultural crops.

Two common varieties are in the Kenyan market: Soft top and hard top. We have white n purple.
Seeding
Garlic has no known seeds from local agrovets.
Propagation of bulbs remains the most viable n possibly the only option.

They have one of the longest dormancy of 8 months.
If bulbs are sourced locally, you can reduce the germination period to just 3 days!!
Why?
Imported garlic has undergone various treatments ranging from freezing to electric heat treatment.

Garlic from Europe has cold treatment for preservation.

Garlic from China undergoes electric heating for preservation.

Such bulbs have the longest dormancy.

DON'T USE THEM!
You might need hormonal stimulation to break the 8 months dormancy from such imported bulbs.

Source local garlic bulbs for germination.
How I Quickly Germinate Garlic in 2 days!!

I simply remove the buds from the buld.
Peal off the hard cover.
Deep in lukewarm water exposing them to sunlight for 4 hours.

Leave them submerged in water n place under light.

Two days later, I have them roots and leaves sprouting
Transplanting:
Prepare your shamba well.

Have compost manure. Garlic requires good supply of natural nutrients.
Manure also helps in loosening the soil. Hardened soil means smaller bulbs for lack of room for bulb expansion.
You can mix NPK with the manure and 1/4 soil.
Make raised beds separated with trenches.
Garlic does well in aerated soils.
Put mixed manure and plant your garlic three inches into the soil.
Simply hold n deep in with your fingers.

Line spacing of 7cm and bud to bub spacing of 5 cm.

Water and mulch when they fully sprout
Weed control is essential as garlic dont compete well with weeds. Your field must be free of weeds.

You can top dress with CAN at 4 months when they start bulbing

Growth and maturity takes 6 to 9 months depending on climatic conditions with variations in temperature n water.
Weed, pest and infections control can be done with herbicides and pesticides.
However, keeping your farm clean reduces the need for pesticides.

Be mindful of the environmental and health impact when opting for chemical control.

Simply use ash mixed with garlic for pests.
Harvest your garlic when you see leaves and stalks turning yellow or brown and falling.

Dry in sun for a day and tie them up in a well aerated room for the bulbs to harden for market.

See you at the market when doing my supplies in the next 8 months 😁

Videos of humans performing everyday tasks (Something-Something-v2, Ego4D) offer a rich and diverse resource for learning representations for robotic manipulation.

Yet, an underused part of these datasets are the rich, natural language annotations accompanying each video. (2/12)

The Voltron framework offers a simple way to use language supervision to shape representation learning, building off of prior work in representations for robotics like MVP (https://t.co/Pb0mk9hb4i) and R3M (https://t.co/o2Fkc3fP0e).

The secret is *balance* (3/12)

Starting with a masked autoencoder over frames from these video clips, make a choice:

1) Condition on language and improve our ability to reconstruct the scene.

2) Generate language given the visual representation and improve our ability to describe what's happening. (4/12)

By trading off *conditioning* and *generation* we show that we can learn 1) better representations than prior methods, and 2) explicitly shape the balance of low and high-level features captured.

One fascist to watch in 2021 is Joseph Charles "Oakman" Golinske of SE MI. He's been a Proud Boy for a couple years, but took a break recently from the group and promotes himself through the "Oak Nation" channel on Telegram.


Most people may be familiar with him as the tall guy in the Proud Boys bridge shot, from their August 17, 2019 attack on Portland, which featured an American Guard bus trying (and failing) to bludgeon antifascists with hammers.


He was also with his g/f at the time (Dominique Tota, left of Tarrio), and that's definitely a twitter account folks will want to block/report because he posts on it.


He's been plenty active at the pro-Covid/anti-mask/ReOpen protests in Lansing MI, seen here with Jerry Wayne and an effigy of Gretchen Whitmer, who his militia friends tried to kidnap and publicly execute.


Outside of the Proud Boys, his solo "career" with Oak Nation features the same misogyny, classism and gateway to far-right domestic terrorism the Proud Boys themselves feature. Here's him peddling oxychlorinque and bragging about harassing service workers.

I get asked for writing tips a lot. Of all the ones I’ve given, here are a few of the ones that seem to hold true and remain somewhat universal or at least mostly unobjectionable:

1. If you are a fast writer (i.e., if you compose first drafts very quickly) then you absolutely must become a slow editor. Much of what I call “writing” is really, for me, editing.

2. If you don’t read you cannot write a lot or well. Sure, maybe you can read like a maniac for a decade and then read less after that, but without some large volume of intake, there will never be a meaningful output.

2.1 I sometimes say that I feel like writing without reading is like trying to run a marathan on a cracker. And sadly I see many students struggling to write when they have simply never read enough to fuel that demand of the task at hand.

3. All writing is writing if one decides to treat it that way. If one takes some degree of intentional will when sending emails, posting on social media and writing notes and marginalia, then all of that can count as meaningful daily writing.
