Dr. Anandibai Joshi

Upon her birth on 31 March 1865 she was named Yamuna, after the holy river. Her parents Gunputrao Amritaswar Joshee & Gungabai Joshee came from a long lineage of wealthy landlord family in Kalyan of Bombay Presidency, whose wealth was now waning.

Anandi was the sixth of 10 children, & had 4 brothers (only two of which survived) & five sisters. Her father was particularly fond of her, as she was a bright child with an inquisitive mind. Being an educated man himself, Ganpatrao assured that his daughter was taught Marathi.

As was common practice she was married at a tender age of 9, to Gopalrao Joshi, a 29 year old widower who worked as a postal clerk in the same city. After marriage her husband named her ‘Anandibai’ (which means ‘Joy of my heart’).

Gopalrao was man ahead of his times with reformist ideas & had married Anandibai on the condition that he would be allowed to educate his wife.

He even tried to enroll Anandi in a missionary school, but did not succeed. Despite being the supportive husband, Gopalrao had his flaws.

He was a strict teacher & would sometimes resort to beating if Anandi slacked in her studies.

Have anyone heard of Savarkar working for untouchables and opening a temple in Ratnagiri?

When Savarkar was under house arrest at Ratnagiri (Maharashtra), he toiled hard and persistently, for decades, to eliminate casteism (Jaat-based discrimination).

Result? Well, as Ambedkar himself noted, because of Savarkar's work Ratnagiri district and parts of Konkan were totally free of caste-based discrimination.

He organised community feasts where people of all castes sat together and ate, he got temples opened for all castes, where properly trained priests from, what were traditionally considered, lower castes presided, he got thread-ceremony (Upanayana) performed on

thousands of ex-untouchable children, to raise the status of women in their own eyes and those of the society, he organized gatherings for women. There are hundred other things Savarkar did to end casteism.

Savarkar had said, "The Kashi Vishweshwara, Jagannath Puri, Dwarka, Rameshwar and other temples should be subject to certain rules and regulations, open to darshan for all Hindus of all castes. No Hindu shall be denied access on the basis of birth - based caste distinction.

Most Indians saw assassination of Gandhi as a national tragedy. But Nehru saw it as a stupendous opportunity to eliminate his arch political rival, Savarkar, the icon of Hindutva, who was revered by millions.

What Nehru feared most was resurgence of Hinduism. And the appeal of Savarkar’s Hindutva philosophy and his mass following was a sword hanging for ever on Nehru’s head. Nehru decided to have it removed, once and for all, by implicating Savarkar in Gandhi’s murder.

Accordingly, he got Savarkar arrested on Feb 6, 1948 , without any specific charge, under the Preventive Detention Act.

When Gandhi Murder trial started in Delhi, his lawyer, Bhopatkar was at a loss to know as to how to defend Savarkar against whom no specific charge was laid.

One fine morning, Bhopatkar got called to the phone at the place where he was staying. When he took the call, he discovered that the caller was Dr Ambedkar.

 ‘Please meet me this evening at the sixth milestone on the Mathura Road’ is all that Dr Ambedkar said.

Accordingly, Bhopatkar drove down the Mathura road that evening and found Ambedkar already waiting for him at Milestone 6. Ambedkar motioned Bhopatkar to get into the car which Ambedkar himself was driving.

These are the two guards guarding the Wealth and Treasure of Lord Sri Venkateswara.

They are representatives of two treasures of Kubera, the God of Wealth.

One guard who is holding shangam (conch) on both the hands is known as Shanka Nidhi ('nidhi' means wealth).

On the other side, the guard who is holding Lotus flowers on both the hands is known as Padma nidhi.

Shangu is from the ocean which includes all types of wealth like pearls and corals.

Why shagam in his hand? Because shangam only gives the sound of 'omkaram'.

'Padmam' is the symbol of water sources in land like river, lakes, tanks etc. which is very important for all living beings.

As per the tradition, these guards are installed at the third entrance of the temple.

One enters the holy shrine after saluting the first protection threshold - Sankha Nidhi and Padma Nidhi.

Each of our temples tells the story of our rich history and cultural heritage. Was Nehru that ashamed of his own nation's heritage that he had to cover them up or there was some other reason? The answer would be best known to him only.

PM Nehru invited the then Saudi King Saud bin Abdul Aziz to India who accepted the invitation and planned a 17 day long official visit to India in 1955. Saudi King had brought a large delegation with him and he had to visit various Indian cities like Mumbai, Hyderabad, Agra,

Aligarh, Shimla, Mysore and Varanasi. However, when Saudi King reached Varanasi, Nehru ordered to cover all the temples and Idols with curtains that came in the way of the Royal Convoy. During his stay in Varanasi, Govt buildings were painted with the words "Kalma Tayyiba".

'Kalma Tayyiba' means 'There is not God but only Allah and Mohammed is his messenger'. In addition to it, Pooja and Aartis were also stopped at temples. I can call it the appeasement politics of the highest order and Nehru was indeed the greatest appeaser of all times.

On the day of Amavasya, devotees get the darshan of Shyam Baba in Shyam varan (black color). In ordinary days, the form of Baba is saffron. The reason for this is a custom. The real head of Shyam Baba which had appeared from Shyam Kund is of Shyam varan.

Every day Shyam Baba's grand Shringar is done by Pujaris. The main part of Shyam Baba's shringar is Tilak. This Shringar is done by the members of Nij Mandir sevaks. The sevaks of the Nij Mandir do sandalwood tilak to Baba everyday in the auspicious time.

This Divine Tilak is applied from the forehead to the nose. When Baba is given a bath by sevaks, this tilak comes off. Then in the auspicious time, the sevaks again apply tilak to Baba.

There is no auspicious time on the Amavasya. Because of this, tilak is not done on that day. That's why devotees have darshan of Shyam Baba on the Amavasya only in the actual real form (Shyam Swaroop). Baba's tilak is done on Amavasya only on the day of Deepawali.

There has been an increase in the construction of National Highways (NHs)/roads over
time, with 10,457 km of roads constructed in FY22 as compared to 6,061 km in FY16.
