SHATTILA EKADASHI

The importance of Shattila Ekadashi is to make people understand the divine blessings and benefits associated with making donations and offering food to the needy and poor.
Most significant aspect of the day is maximum use of sesame seeds (til).

Once there was a rich woman who made huge donations to the needy in the form of money and valuables. However, she never donated food. So one day, Krishna went to her in the form of a beggar and asked for food. The woman tried to send him away. Krishna kept on asking for food.

So the angry woman put a clay ball in his begging bowl and Krishna went away. When she went inside her house, she found that everything had turned into clay.
From then on, whatever she purchased turned into clay. She had to starve without food.

She turned to Krishna and prayed for forgiveness. Krishna advised her to donate food to the poor and needy on the day of Shattila Ekadashi. The woman did so and regained her health and wealth.

GOPI TALAB, DWARIKA AND GOPI CHANDAN

Gopi Talab is a lake near Dwarika. The yellow soil here is believed to have divine properties that can cure many diseases, especially those related to skin. People smear this dust on forehead to be blessed with Krishna’s love.

When Krishna was leaving Dwarika, Gopis of Vrindavan came to meet him one last time.
During Raas, Krishna's Srivatsa tilak fell into water and sunk to the bottom. The gopis themselves offered their lives to this soil n merged with Krishna. Since then, soil became fine n yellow.

It is also said that after Kurukshetra war, Arjun developed pride. To end this, Krishna asked him to escort his queens to Bet Dwarka. On the way, he was attacked and defeated by people of Kaba community. The shocked queens jumped and died in this Talab (which became Gopi Talab).

Gopi chandan is applied on the body in twelve places while reciting mantras to Sri Vishnu. This process purifies one's body, designating it as Prabhu’s mandir. A person who marks his limbs with gopi-chandana tilaka attains the result of bathing in the Ganga.

PUTRADA EKADASHI: TODAY

Putrada Ekadashi is one out of 24 Ekadashis in a year. Ekadashi is the day when Sri Vishnu is worshipped.

Putrada means giver of a son. The story of Putrada Ekadasi or Pausha-Shukla Ekadasi is from Bhavishya Purana.

Bhadravati was ruled by King Suketumaan. He and his wife Shaibya were unhappy as they did not have a son. One day, out of depression, the King rode off on his horse without informing Shaibya. By midday, in the forest, he started feeling thirsty and hungry.

Wandering in the forest, he saw a pond with blooming Lilies and Rishi Ashrams near it. He saw some Rishis who were reciting mantras on beads. They identified themselves as the ten Vishvadevas and advised the King to follow Putrada Ekadashi fast to appease Sri Vishnu.

The King observed the fast with devotion and returned to his kingdom. With Sri Vishnu’s blessings, he was blessed with an illustrious son.

The story of Putrada Ekadashi was narrated by Krishna to Yudhishthir. Usually, on this day, the child form of Krishna is worshipped.

JAYA EKADASHI: TODAY

The eleventh day of the Magha, Shukla Paksha is referred to as Jaya Ekadashi. The Ekadashi Vrat Kathas were narrated to Yudhishthira by Sri Krishna himself.
On Ekadashi, worshipping Sri Vishnu with dedication bestows eternal blessings.

Once, Indra was enjoying Gandharva music in the presence of Gandharva Pushpadanta and Chitrasen. Pushpadanta's daughter Pushpavati and Chitrasen's grandson Malyavan were also present in the court.
Pushpavati and Malyavan were attracted towards each other.

As they were distracted, they started singing wrong notes. For this disrespect, Indra punished them. Both of them lost their powers and landed on earth to lead a life as human beings. To get rid from the curse, they observed Ekadashi vrat while sitting under a Peepal tree.

Pleased by their devotion, Sri Vishnu relieved them from the curse and they soon regained their lost powers.
It is said that by observing a vrat on this Ekadashi, one can liberate himself/herself from the effects of their wrongdoings.

VIJAYA EKADASHI: TODAY

The Ekadashi Tithi of Phalguna, Krishna Paksha is called Vijaya Ekadashi.

Vijaya Ekadashi is the day that symbolises victory. Those who wish to attain success in some work observe this vrat and seek Sri Vishnu's blessings.

When Sri Rama got to know where Ravana had taken Ma Sita, he decided to attack Lanka. However, the vast ocean in front of him made his task difficult. It was then suggested to him to go to Rishi Bhakad Albhya.
The great Rishi suggested the Ekadashi Vrat to Sri Ram.

Sri Rama did the Ekadashi vrat, as suggested and was able to overcome all obstacles.
Similarly, anyone who observes the Vijaya Ekadashi vrata with devotion, attains glory and the eternal blessings of Sri Hari Vishnu.

Devotees worship Sri Vishnu on this day and observe fast. Reading Vishnu Sahasranama is considered as highly auspicious. It is prohibited to consume any sort of grains, pulses, and rice on this day.
