A temple's two essential components are

1. Garbhagrahamm - a shrine carrying God's image

2. The Vimanamn, is a structure built on top of the Garbhagraham.

The Garbhagraham:

When Westerners first visited Indian temples, they believed they were filthy and disgusting. Temples could not have many doors and windows due to the nature of their design. There could only be one door, and it was a little one at that.

It's no surprise that those Westerners left with the sense that the temples were filthy, dark, and dismal, with no way for fresh air to enter.

Their own churches, by contrast, were open and airy, with numerous large doors and windows through which light and fresh air could easily enter and keep them clean. Today, no one in India will be able to explain why temples lacked windows and numerous doors.
